~00~0 ' • A FREEWAY VICTORY IN MALIBU
Freeway news of Interest comes from
recent issues of the Malibu Times: "As-
sembly Bill 496 to delete the Paplflc
Coast Highway (in the Malibu area) from
the state freeway plan successfully passed
the Assembly in May with a 48-0 affirm-
ative vote, scored with the stiff Senate
transportation committee 8 to 2 In the
affirmative on June 7, and passed the
Senate 26-0 June 16." I wonder If the
freeway promoters are planning to sue
the State Assembly and the Senate for
this action, as they have threatened to
sue the City of Newport Beach for the
cancellation of the local freeway agree-
ment! • • •
• OBSERVE "HONOR AMERICA DAY"
Every day Is the right time to pledge
allegiance to our country and to our flag.
On this Fourth of July, being observed
as "Honor America Day," It Is especially
fitting to repeat: "I pledge allegiance
to the flag of the United States of Amer-
ica and to the Republic for which it
stands, one Nation under God, Indivisible,
with liberty and justice for all."
Our Republic is under massive attack,
both frOIJl foreign foe and from the enemy
at home, who seek to destroy this great
bastion of defense against totalitarianism.
Our r asp.ect for individual liberty and
our obligation to pass It 0:1 to,the future
genera<t Jns should Impel us to pledge
"to each other our livesJ our fortunes
and our sacred honor," just as the Found-
ing Fathers tlld upon signing the Declar-
ation of Independence 195 years ago. • • •

of every family should have a working k.nowledae

the American Red Cross gives classes where such
information and training can be acquired. We

recommendation is to maintain a supply of first·

to assist you in your selection.

How God took a country boy from Mississippi, made him

~TOM LUlU
When I beeame a Chriotlan I
didn't even know what it meant
to make Chriot the Lord of my
life. That eame many years later.· At
the moment I just knew that I wu
I08t and needed J e.sus to save me
from my sins, so I accepted him as
my personal Savior and was ba~
tized. I was ten years old .
In time interesting circumstance&
began to develop, for God was deal-
ing with me. I knew I would never
be happy unleM I did what God
wanted. Each time I saw a TV
show or attended a play, the idea
floated into my mind that I would
like to become an actor.
Knowing that I would soon be
g raduating from high school (in
Laurel, Missis.~ippi). my friends
began asking me what I was going
to do with my life. Well, J stood six
-feet four inche~ tall and weighed
about 11 8 pounds, and when I men-
tioned going to Hollywood, they
said, "Tom, you're out of your mind.
You're too tall, too skinny, too
ugly, and you have a Southern ac-
cent. You can't possibly ma ke it."
So I made a big mistake. I listened
to other people telling me that I
couldn't do what God wanted mP.
to do. Right then my problems be-
gan.
I liked biology and chemistry, so
I decided to enroll in a pre-med
cour se at the U niversity of Missis-
llippi. After gr aduating f'rom "Ole
Mi ss" I couldn't ~et into medical
~chool. I reasoned that it mu.!\t have
been my grades, althouJrh !'lome of
my friends with grade!~ lower than
mine were being accepted. I tr~ns
ferred to the Uni verllity of South -
ern Mi ssissippi ali a graduate stu-
dent a nd made the denn'!i list. Still
I failed to make med school. and
realized t ha t I couldn't !i!pend the
rest of my life tryi n~ to become a
doctor.
Having taken !iOme education
courses . I decided t o tf'arh school
for a while, and HCCepted <1 position
at Purcell . Oklahoma. Afte r a year
1 knew it was not what God wanted
me to do. As I look hack I am
thankful fo r that yea r Hf teaching.
I would have been happy in that
profe.!\sion if it had heen what God
wanted for my life. hut it wasn't.

I told my pantnto I waa JrOIDI' to
California to try to break Into mo.
tion pieturea. 1'wo fadl pve me
faith to make the attempt. One,
moet important, waa that I knew
God wanted me tp become an actor.
Two, I read an article quotine Don
Knotts, who wu uked how he
thought he could ever 11ueceed in the
movie11. He replied that he ftgured
everyone in Hollywood wa11 hand-
some and that they needed someone
just a little bit different. I reuoned
the same way.
I got into my car and headed
toward southern CaJifornia. Bear in
mind that I had had no experience
in acting. I had taken part in only
one high school play. Yet I had
faith to believe that God could ac-
complish what he wanted. Follow-
ing the map to Hollywood I found
myself driving up Sunset Boulevard,
and as I approached Beverly Rtlls
I spotted a little sign at the comer
of Cynthia and Doh.eny. It read
"First Southern Baptist Church ."
Through that church I met an
actor who agreed to rent me a room
in his home. I set out to look for a
job, and after several months went
by my bank account was gone with
the wind. I had $40 left in it. Then
the Graham Team carne to Los An-
geles to hold a Crusade in the Coli-
seum in August, 1963. I remember
Mr. Graham informing everyone
present that the Crusade had been
undertaken on faith, and that a cer-
tain sum was needed to meet their
debts.
The Lord told me to give $10.
~ow, when yQu are living in Lo!i!
An~les without a job and have $40
a nd the Lord tells you to give $10
of that to him, you ar~rue just a
little bit. God won the argument
and I dropped $10 in the offering
plate. Next day the brother of my
landlord informed me I might get
a job as a ch emist in the city. The
·union advi~d me I would be con-
tacted in three weeh. The very
next day I was told to go for an
interview at General Film Labs.
There they told me I didn't have the
qualifications but they would let me
know something in three weekM. I
was called the riext day and told to
start work on Monday.
This experience taught me that
if we never have to struggle we will
never grow aa Christians, and that
if1we have faith in God he will take
ca:re of us. I inquired about taking
acting lessons and was informed by
an actor friend, once again, that 1
was too tall, too ugly, too skinny
and had a Southern accent. How-
ever, he advised me to call Lurene
Tuttle, whom I discovered to be one
of the finest drama coaches in the
profession. She sent me to the North
Hollywood Playhouse, where I did
some "showcases" and where I met
Paul Henni ng. the creator and prQ..
. ducer of "The Beverly Hillbillies"
g and "Petticoat Junction." !, About thi~ time I began spend-
~ ing 30 minutes each evening in
1 prayer. I began to thank God for ~loving me and !Wvi ng me and doing

all the wonderful things for me that
I did not deserve. Three weeks went
by and I was info rmed one Satur-
day morning that Mr. Henning
wanted me to read for the part of
"Eb" on "Green Acres." I knew
"Green Acrea" was a TV show
about city folks coming to live in
the country, and I knew there was
nobody in Hollywood as "country"
as I was.
I started praying as 800n as the
screen test was over, and never
stopped, r don't think. until three
days later when my agent called
and said, "Tom, I'm fixing to make
you happy. You have the part of
'Eb.'" I doubt if any of the folh

answer is that Mince I have been

the opportunity to Mpea k to thou-

with them. That's the (lill y reason
I believe God wanted nw l0 be an

I think it is a ~in not to witness
for Christ. The bc~t-k cp t ~ccret
held by 90 per cent of the Chris-
tians throughout the world toda y is
Jesus. Christians juJ-~t won't tell
people about Jesu ~. Remember this.
you wilJ neve r be anything but a
baby Christian until you ~wrt to
witness for Christ and allow him
to bring souls into his Kingdom
through you. If you really love God,
you will tell others of his saving
Grace.
I would not be much of a Chris-

world that Jei!U!~ is the Way. 1 think
there is a vast difference hetween
reli~on and Christianity. There a re
