• RUMORS OF DEATH EXAGGERATED
A most lively corpse Is the proposed
coast freeway. It has been put in deep
freeze a number of times, including the
overwhelming March 9 voice of Newport
Beach voters, the ratification of the voters'
anti-freeway decision by both the State
Assembly and Senate, and more r ecently
the new policy announced by Governor
Ronald Reagan against freeways along the
coastal zone, and the announcement by
Bamford Frankland, assistant director of
the state public works department, that
the proposed coast freeway through News
port Beach Is "dead and buried." Each
time the corpse seems to take on life
again, iq spite of the often stated policy
that a freeway will NOT be built through
an area where there Is overwhelming
opposition. The lesson to be learned Is
that the Freeway Fighters must continue
to be eternally vigilant and must cons
tinue to keep the local citizens equally
alert to the perU ofthe freeway bulldozers. • • •

The utterly Insane, upside-down nature
of President Richard Nixon's foreign
policy is starkly brought into focus by
this contrast: President Nixon has an-
nounced his intention to travel to Peking
to sit down for peace chats with the
leaders of communist China, one of the
greatest tyranni ?S in the histor Y' o~ the
world, and Mr .Nixon has been for some
time working urgently toward greater
trade with both co:nmunist Russia and
communist China. At the same time, the
Nixon administration maintains a trade
embargo against Rhodesia, the strongly
proswestern and anti-communist nation
in Africa. This em~argo prevents the
Importation of strategic high grade Rho-
desian chrome or e , which the U.S. as a
result purchases from communist Russia
at enormously Inflated prices. Such a
mad-mad-mad-mad-mad policy Is the in-
evitable product of the left wing forces
which have for years been in control in
our State Department, giving assistance
to communist nations and back-stabbing
anti-communists throughout the world,
and at home. • • • * DON'T BLAME US

Then Wddenly a solution was found-not by the medlt~~l l)fofeuion, but by
the Church! Georae ROMn, in History of Public Health, tells the Jtory.
"~rlhlp was taken b1 the Church, as the physici1ns had nothina to offer.
The Church took as its auiding ~inciple the concept of eontqiof'l as emtioditd
In the Old Testament. ... This 1dea and its practical consequences are defined
with arut tllrity in the book of levitic us ... , Once the condition of leprosy Md
been established, the patient was to be segregated and excluded from the com-
munity. Followlni the precepts laid down in leviticus the Church undertook the
task of combatin& leprosy ... it accompl ished the first great feat ... in methodi-
cal eradication of the disease."
Thus. hundreds of years befOfe the principles of qu.rantine could be ex-
plelned scient ifically through Oliver Wendell Holmes' studies on the contili;ion
ot certain fevers and Pasteur's a:erm theory, the Church wu effectively practising
it. And these life-saving principles flowed from the pen of MoH1 more than four
thousand years before the plague. From the annals of medical science and con·
vinci~ ~rsonal .experi.ence over many years, s .. I. McMillen, M.D. has recently compil~ •mpress•~e. ev•dence of the. va lue. of. scnptural prescriptions for physical well-bem~~:. The or•a•n of the Quarantine pnnc1pel 1s one of the examples Mc Millen
Jives in ~one of These Diseases (Fleming H. Revell Co., $2.951.
BASIC SANITATION
Another is the prmc1ple of sanitat1on ... Such waste of human t.ves that could
have been saved i fpeople had only taken sericusly God's provision for freeinJ rNn
of dis.ea~l" McMillen wntes. 'With one sentence the Book of books pointed
the way to del1verance from the deadly epidemics of typho1d, cholera and dysen-
tery; 'Yoo shall set off a piKe outside the camp and, when you go oot to use it,
)'OU must carry a spade among your ~ear and d1g a hole, have easement, and turn
to cover the excre~T.ent .' A medical htstofian writes that this directive is ·certainly
a primitive measure, but an · effective one, wh ich mdicates advanced ideas of
sanitation'."
The principles of sanilation eluded medical men lor centunes. As late as
the middle 1800's medical authOfities ac tually opposed efforts at samlation. A
young physician, fgnaz Serr.melweis, in an effort to lower morta lity in childbirth,
Imposed stric t rules requiring alt doctors and nurses to wash hands carefully
before examinine ,.,aternity patients, As a result the death rate droppe-d from
one out of SIX to one out of 84 tn the ~·oung doctor's ward.
The nmeteenlh chapter of the Book of Numbers reveals a system of :;am-
tation that surpassed P.~ten that of Semmelwe1s. This passage of scripture 1ncludes
a quarant:nc of seven days to• anyone who comes 1n contact wtth a dead bXIy.
"And whos~ touches one that ts slain with a sword 1n the open fields, Of a dead
body, or a bone nl a man, or a grave, shall be unclean seven days.'' Durin~~: the
periOd of Quarantme. the subject was requtred to wash thoroughly and conlinually.
.. And whatsoever the 1:nc lean person toucheth shall be unclean: and lhe soul that
toucheth 1t shall be unclean . "
BIBLICAL DIET
The Books of Moses were stnct m regulatmg not only sanitation, bul also
diet. How strange and unreasonable the commands of Leviticus 22:8 must have
seemed to early Hebrews: "That wh1ch dte th of ilsell, or ts torn with beasts, he
shall not eat to defile himself therewilh: I am the Lord." Yet how many of them
wert: spared of fatal gastrointestinal diseases because they were prevt!nted from
utinJ putrefying bacteria-and vtrus·infested flesh!
Another command wh 1ch must have seemed strange to lhe Hebrews IS found
in Deuteronomy 14 :8. "And the swme, because 11 dividelh the hoof, yel cheweth
not the cud, it is unclean unto you; ye shall not eat of thetr fl esh nor touch
their dead carcass.''
Only m recent years was tl reai1Ied that Trichmella spirahs, commonly found
in undercooked pork. could cause the painful and serious illness, trichinosis.
A final example McM1IIen g•ves of modern mediCine in the Bible concerns
c~rcumcision. McMillen Quotes two researchers who report that the new born infanl
has "peculiar susceptibility to bleeding between the second and fifth days of
life. . . hemorrhages at this t ime, though often inconsequenlial, are sometimes
extensive," McMillen says. The reason for this early bleeding is probably because
the blOOd clolting element, vitam in K. IS no t formed unlit the fifth to seventh
day of life. "If vitamm K IS not manufactured 1n the baby's mtestinal tract until
the fifth to the seventh day. it IS clear that the first safe day to perlorm cir-
cumcision would be the e1ghth day," McMi llen wntes.
Four thousand years ago, when the Jews were l1vm;;: m c~tcumstances very
unfavorable to san1lat10n. Scnpture records the command of Jehovah to Abraham
thai he circumcise new-born male mfants. The command IS recorded in Genesis
17:12-"And he !hat IS etght days old shall be c•rcumctsed ." "Abraham did
not pick the e1ghth day after many centunes of tr~al and erret experiments, ..
McMillen wr1tes. "Ne1ther he nor any of h1s company from the anctenl city of Ur
1n the ·Chaldees had ever been cncumCised. It was a day pic ked by the Creator
of v1tamin K."
WASHINGTON'S DEATH
The c~rcumstances surround1ng the death of the Falher of our Country George
~ashmjton, are unknown to many people. On the f1rst of December, 1799. Wash-
lnjton contracted pneumoma. Although he was 67 years old at the t1me, recovery
would not have been ImpOSSible. However. Wash1n~~:ton fell victJm of a medical
fad .of the time. II was bel1e11ed !he illness from wh ich he was suffer~ng was
urned by the bloodstream, and so the phys1cians began to bleed him. Though
the pi'OCess took several days, George Washington eventually bled to death!
The ser~ousness of ..... eakentng an already weakened body by draining the
blood from 11 cannot be exaggeraled. There are no figures ava1lable to tell us
how many fatal1ties resulted from !hiS process. The rumber'i are undoubtedly
stauermg-and the fact that all of these mcldents could have been avoided
by heeding one verse of sctlpture make'.> them all the more lraglc . In Leviticus
1':11 Moses wrote, "For the l1fe of the flesh IS m the blood ... "
. ~he !1fe of the flesh IS st1ll recognized as bemg 1n the blood, wh1ch carries
1ts hfe·fii:l":mg nutnents to every cell. Readers of Prevention know how to keep
the nu~nh'?nal level of lhe blood always h1gh, and to guard it against chemical
contam1nat1on. Some day the whole world w1ll learn as much.--Prevention, Dec . 1966
The future ()f the Jews
by William R. N"'ell
After lhe judgment of God at the tower of Babel, the nations were 11C8Uered
and permitted to walk in their own ways. God "gave lht>m up" to wury them-
.eiYeS Mth vanity. Meanwhile (aa Wf' find in Acts 17;30). "The timrt of thi.a

Wh at is sin? No doubt lhil
question would brinJ forth
many different answers from
various people. But, we want
an authoritative answer, and
thai must come from the Bible.
God's Word . "Sin is the
tran!i&fession of the l1w" and'
"all unrighteousness iJ sin" (I
John 3 :4 and 5 :17).
This simply tells us that any
transgression of !he
commandmenu and principles
gjven in !he Bible is sin.
DisObedience to. God's Word
and His will is sin. Romans
S: 19 tells us of the deva.slatina
resultl of one man's
disobedience and also the
Jlorious ulvuion made
•vail•ble by the obedience of
Christ. "As by one man's
disobedience many were m1de
sinners, so by the obedience of
one shall lt}any be made
rilhteous."
'Sin is aepualion from God.
It caused an impasuble barrier
which cut man off from the
source of all joy, peace and
blessina. Since God ia
rilhteous, He cannot overtook,
ianore or condone sin. For Cod
to continue to be Holy and
rilhteous, the penalty of ai.n
must be paid. Praile God! It
has been paid . ''God
commendeth Uis Jove towud
us, in that while we were yet
si.nnefs, Christ died for us."
( Romaru 3i : 8), ''Chris! died for
our tins." (I Cor. I S:3).
_James 4: 17 b • vene th•t

subject of lin; ''Therefore to
biM that knoweth to do IOQd,
and doetb it not, to him It le
1in." This Cflrtalnly lJ a

Electricity Is vital to your way ot lite.
So is a healthy environment.
We 're working to bring you both.
To generate electricity, Edison has
harnessed the spring thaws in a part
of the High Sierra of Central Cali-
fornia. Over the years it meant build-
ing 15 major dams and six lakes in
an area now known as "Big Creek." . '
Today Big Creek is one of America's
largest hydroelectric power
developments. It provides low-cost
electricity, fl ood control and water
conservation.
It's also a vast rec reatio n area
open to the public.
Every year the man-made lakes
attract boaters, water-skiers,
fishermen, swimmers and e\·en
skin-divers. At Camp Edison-
Shaver Lake, campgrounds with
electric outlets offer campers
many of the comforts of home.

At Irvine.
Where 35.000 other Orange County people have
found jobs. Where people found jobs at the rate
of 100 a week ... all last year and the year before,
during Orange County's worst unemployment in
1 3 years.
100 new jobs ... opening up every week on
Irvi ne lands. Where have all these new jobs come
from? From Irvine development. Planned . Care-
ful. Balanced d evelopment .
Right from the start, we made a promise here
at The Irvine Company. Not t o do what other de-
velopers have been doing for years tn Orange
County. Not to build a bedroom community ..
• with nothing but a sea of hou ses . and a couple of
stores and a few token acres set aside for industry.
We promised that Irvine development would
have a strong economic base . With business and
non -polluting indust ry . Enough to provide plenty
of jobs. (And plenty of taxes to support our new
community .)
Jobs in industry
Most important of all. we promised not to de-
pend on just one kind of industry-like defense or
aerospace . That's why there are boat-builders at
Irvine. And hospital supply manufacturers. And
bio-medical research ftrms. And food service com-
panies. And consumer product manufacturers.
Side by side w ith electronic firms . So even if one
company has to lay off workers. its ne ighbors may
be expanding and adding jobs.
The result? Last year-the same year that un-
employment doubled in Orange County-Irvine
in dustry added 70 new jobs each week. And in-
creased its total employment a healthy 26 % by
the end of the year .
There 's more to Irvine than just industrial
employment. There's Newport Center (Financial
Plaza , Medical Plaza . Fashion Island) and A irport
Center ... with thousands of jobs in banks. stores.
offices. hotels. restaurants . There are neighbor-
hood centers ... with jobs in su permarkets. drug
stores. specialty shops . There are schools and a
university campus ... with jobs for teachers and
staff.
And every time somebod·t builds something
on Irvine. it m eans jobs for Orange County con-
struction workers.
35,000 paychecks
It all adds up to 35.000 men and women
drawing wages on Irvine lands (which means
we 've been ''building " a lot more jobs than
houses). And it doesn 't stop there. Like pebbles
dropping into a pond. those 3 5 . 000 paychecks
start money spreading out to the rest of Orange
County. To automobile dealers,, mechanics.
nurses, barbers, waiters, plumbers, government
workers. salesmen, insurance agents, travel
agents. gardeners. And that helps keep all those
people working .
I
•
• ••
•••
I I I
I I I
That 's why, when we hear people say they 'd
like to see Irvine stop development ... and leave
the rest of the land just the way it is ... we wonder
tf they realize what that would do to Orange
County.
Because without Irvine development. there 'd
be a lot more people out of work than there al -
ready are. Peopl e ltke A-Roland Smith. aerospace
systems analyst. Laid off for the third time in
three years, he went o n unemployment ... and fi-
nally, welfare . Th en TransMask Corporation in
the Irvine Industrial Complex decided to hire Mr.
Smith and train him in a new field .
Like Robert Rustad, construction labor fore-
man H e finished up one job (Union Bank Build-
ing in Irvine's Newport Center) and moved right
on over to another (Pacific Mutual Life Insurance
building , also in Newport Center) without missing
a paycheck .
Like "Pepper" Gordin who 's putting her hus-
band through college. She found a job ~oYith Avco
Firtancial Services in its new office building at
Irvi ne 's Newport Center.
Jobs and taxes
Irvine's master plan for development has a
lot of good things to offer the people of Orange
' •
County. A steady supply of jobs is just one of
them . Property taxes from busi ness and industry
on Irvine land are another.· (Did you know that
these taxes help support schools in Santa Ana ,
Orange, Costa Mesa. Tustin . Newport Beach,
Corona del Mar, Laguna Beach and Mission Viejo
... not just those on Irvine?) In addition , Irvine
business and industry pay millions and millions of
dollars in taxes to federal. state and local govern-
ment. .. taxes far in excess of the services required
by the people who live and work on Irvine.
Write us
If you 'd like to know more about Irvine and
its master plan, just ask us. (Write to: Suite 700,
5 50 Newport Center Drive, Newport Beach
92660.)
And meanwhile, if you know anyone who's
out looking for a job ... tell him to keep an eye on
Irvine development. Because every time a house
or an office building goes up on Irvine land ...
every time a new industry comes to Irvine Indus-
trial Complex ... you can be sure there 'll be jobs in
it for someone in Orange County. •
