The situation in the eyes of the conserva-
tive can be likened to a blazing house, with
people inside who do not yet know of the
peril from the fire, and the observer on
the outside must cry out the alarm at the
top of his lungs.
When the names are not visible, the
retort from the likely victims Is that
"there goes that alarmist trying to scare
us again."
The cold s oJ:?er fac t is lhat our country
is in peril. The "flames" cannot be seen
by those who have not been doing their home
work. But those who have been reading and
studying t~? many well documented reports
of the decline of United States power and
prestige and of the drift toward the welfare
state are fully aware of the danger we face.
Shouting the warning will not turn the
tide. The r esponse t o such ''extremism"
most likely is the scoffing remark that
"it's only scare talk," or that "we've
never had it so good," or thal.''the enemy
is mellowing" ...
There Is one possible solution to the
dilemma: if only the unconcerned citizens
would do their home work, examine the
many books that are available, check up on
the official documents that back up the
concern of the conservatives ... perhaps
an awakening will come about before It is
t oo late.
Here are just a few of the books that can
cause the awakening :
* "HOW THE FAR EAST WAS LOST" • by Dr. Anthony Kubek, chairman of the
department of political science at the
University of Dallas.
* "THE ORDEAL OFOTTOOTEPKA,"
by William J . Gill.
* "WITNESS," by Whittaker Chambers.
* "SEEDS OF TREASON," by Ralph de
Toledano.
* "YOU CAN TR UST THE COMMU-
NISTS," (to be communists ), by Dr. Fred
Schwarz.
* "MASTERS OFDECEIT,"byJ.Edgar
Hoover.
* "AMERICA'S RETREAT FROM VIC-
TORY," by Senator Joseph R. McCarthy.
* "THE NAKED COMMUNIST,'' by
Clean Skousen, and only recently pub-
lished, "THE NAKED CAPITALIST," by
the same author.
Any one of these will do for a starter.
Another suggestion Is "ECONOMICS IN
ONE LESSON," by Henry Hazlltt --!or
an understanding of the economic tacts
of life, particularly the folly of wage and
price controls, a most timely topic.
