Quite a few taxpayers in Newport Beach
have been made "Instant criminals" with
the mailing of misdemeanor notices baSed
on a business license law they did not even
know existed.
Flrst came a "dear sir" letter notUying
owners of 3 or more business or resi-
dential rentals that they owe the city a $50
annual business license fee. Even before
the initial shock could wear off, along came
a misdemeanor notice, ordering payment
within 7 days, 140r else" --the "or else"
being a summons to court.
Such lack of tact and courtesy as dis-
played In these curt notices Is not the
treatment we expect from our city em-
ployees. The first action by our City
Council should be to rescind all those
misdemeanor notices and threats of legal
action. But more Important Is the need to
reexamine this license fee policy.

This particular portion of the license
code is Inequitable because It Is double
taxation for commercial rentals. The busl-
'hesses occupying' the 'rentals :tlready are
paying business license tees, covering the
costs of administering the license code.
Requiring the property owner also to pay a
license fee Is levying a charge for which no
service Is rendered and thus no value Is
received. The residential property owner
who Is ordered to pay for a business
license also Is paying a fee for no value
received, since no additional service Is
rendered other than the services paid for
by property taxes.

of this. Peter is speakina about the

Juus Christ Swpn-star does not por·

the wQrktt of miracles. T~m Rice,
says that he is seeking to portray Jesus
as a man. not as God. but the weak.
frail. faltering man that we see in the
opera. is directly opposite of the Man
Jesus Otrist who nC\'er committed a
sing!e sin in His life and who spoke
w:ith utmost authority on every sub--

that your children have next to their
rc<::ol'd player pasaed the: sa.me inspce-

prrtty little: poppies and yellow sub·
marines and you thought how hann-
less it is for your son and daugtur to
be tapping th~r toes to these little dit-
ties. But if you will cartfuUy check
the contm.t of the messages being
poured out over dlat record player in
your houS~t:, you may find that they are
subtly urging your children to rebel
againBt their parents, to smoke mari-
juana or try LSD, to join the hippie
peace movement, or to commit adul-

in this same category, for it will make
your .sons and daughters to rebel
against the God of their parents, the
Christ of the Holy Scriptures, the One
whom they teamed to sing about in
Sunday school : "Jesus loves me, this
I know ; for the Bible tells me 10."
hnu Chiist S wpentor is not about
thr Christ of the Bible, the CAlc who is
tht cetl(er of the Cllristian faith. It
rather tries to ~onstruct J esu.s Chri!t
making H im a man wbo is kiuffl. and
(ondlo:J. by a prostitute ; a man who,
when jostled by a crowd that begs him
to .heal thnn, cries, "Heal yourselves I"

Rlglotfully Judas is the "superstar"
of this opera. Hr is ponrayed as try-

frustrated Judas finally dies a martyr.
Tim Rice, the one who wrote the lyrics
of the rock opera, in an "official" in-
terview which was included with the
album as it was 9e11t out to radio sta-
tions across t~ na.tion, was uked this
question: "Was the basic. idea that of
Jesus, as ~en through the eyes of Tim
Rioe and Andrew Lloyd Webber?"
Rice answered: "Well, it'! i.lound to be
Jesw s-een through our eyes, J suppose
But t.sically, the idea of tht: whole

answer and opinion of \\ha: he thinks
of Jesus Christ during the production,
but the only 0101:: who is pot allowed to
answer thOilC' questions in the rock
opera i.s }nus Christ ffimself. the one
of whom the questions are being asked.
The theme is repeatnl several times
near the conclusion of the opera, and it
forces the ti~r. wheth.e-r consciously
or unconsciously, to give his own an-
swer and opinion of what he thinks of
Jesus O.riat.
Pannts, what wiU be your child's
opinion of Jesw Christ by hearing this
album pla.ynl over and over on his
record player? Son or da.ugh.t.er, how
will you answer the question, Who is
jesus Christ? Will you agree with
Judas who said : "Naz.areth, )'Our fa.
mous son should have stayed a great
unknown''? W ill you join with ?vf:~.ry
Magdalene, who in the opera is a pros-
titute, and sing : "I ne\-tt thought I'd
come to this-what's it all a.bout ? Yet.
if he said he loved me . I'd be lost; l'd
be frightened; I couldn't cope. just
couldrll't oope. I'd turn my head ; I'd
back away ; I wouldn't want to know.
H e scares me so. I want hi m so. I
love him so." O r will )'OU join the
crowd on PaJm Sunday a.nd flippantly
sing this little ditty: .. Christ you know
I love you ; did you see l waved ? I
believe in you and God. so tell me that
I'm saved"? S upnsttJT c.a.n only turn
you furthe-r from salvation.
The rock opera lnv.t Christ S wptr-
stDT must be opposed bea.use it falsi-
fies a.nd disto rts the Bible by giving its
chara.c.ttrs words to sing which a.re in
direct cortrad:iction to what is reported
in the Scri~ures.
In the Last S upper the apostles,
drunk with wine in the opera, ta:lk
about writing the Gos~b so that they
can be famous. The real reason for
writing them is explained in the Gos-
pels however : "But these are written
that ye might believe that Jesus is the
(..lu-ist, the Son o f God ; and that be-
lie\·ing ye mighl have life th rough His
name" (Jolm 20 :11 ).
J.n Sw.p~,.star Jesus said to the apos-

dead." What jesus r~lly did say i!
reco rded in Luke 2:!: 19: "This do in
rernembranec-of me." .'\nd the apostles
did remember Him .tr.d pre2.ched His
message of salvation which not only
spread throughout tile ancient world
but it still being preached by thousands
today. Paul the apostle wrote under
inspiration of the Holy Spirit some
time after Jesus O~.tUt had ascended
into Heaven: "At the "a'"' of Je:sus

The rock opera Jesus Chri.rt S wpn-

tht· Christian faith by making a farce
of its doctrines which are 5tt set forth
in the ::,criptures. We dare not poke

the color of a man's skin, or ridicule
his "religi90"; but let tomeOne make
a sham of the sacrament of Holy Com-

which millions have held tc. be the balis
of their faith throughout the centuries,
and the people of our country ftoclc to
enjoy it.

cue Gibeon. Joshua had talked this OYer
with the Lord, who had guaranteed a

came unto them suddenly. and went up
from Gl1pl [his hearquarters about 20

wiped out. As a climax to the hattie.
"the Lord cast down great stone! from
heaven upon them unto Azebh, and they
