• LEGISLATING BY PERSONAL WHIM
This Log has editorialized against the
Inequities of the Newport Beach s ervice
station ordinance, but Blackle Gadarlan
has said It mu ch better. The outspoken
boatyard owner told the City Council
last week: ''This proposed ordinance Is
just the first step that would lead to
similar controls on other businesses.
Once your foot Is in the door with this
legislation, based on aesthetics, It will
eventually get to other businesses, and
will affect me and my boat yard. A man
wants to run a service station, not a
shrubbery farm," he objected, referring
to a provision in the ordinance requiring
landscaping on 15% of the station area.
Mr. Gadarian stated further : "It Is not
the function of city government to legislate
how many tires can be displayed at a
service station any more than you could
attempt to legislate how many dresses
are displayed In a dress shop window."
The new concept for legislating more
controls on business (and eventually on
residences also) is based on eliminating
what the planning dreamers in our city
government call "visual pollution." It
does not take much imagination to realize
what drastic and injurious restrictions
can result from such an absurd standard
of law-making .
All local businessmen, and residents
as well, should heed Blackie Gadarian's
warning and voice their objections to the
City Council. If this type of legislation
is enacted, there will be dangerous pre-
cedent for further controls based on the
unconstitutional concept of aesthetics,
which is determined by whim of personal
taste.
• • • * LICENSE FEE IS INEQUITABLE
A subtle scheme for dividing and con-
quering in the business license fee con-
troversy is to claim that "it is unfair
to charge small businesses the same
fee as big businesses." This is an attempt
to play small business against big busi-
ness, and can result in changing the baSic
concept of levying business license fees.
The historic practice in Newport Beach
has been to charge fees for services
rendered in order to cov1t administrative
expenses. The c hange that Is being con-
templated would place license fees In the
category of a new source of Income In
the annual budget --and then all local
businesses would face periodic Increases
in the business license cost.
Why should local businessmen always
stand on the defensive against the threat
of more and more burdens through legisla-
tion enacted by their own City Council?
The best defense Is a good offense. It Is
time for businessmen to launch a concerted
drive to eliminate business license fees,
rather than fight rear-guard a ctions
against license tee Increase.
We bo.•slnessmen receive no extra ser-
vice In exchange for the annual tee ex-
tracted ,by the city. We pay for city
path ldlllnc tler neighbors! Her
present mtutlry move may have
been to call attenUonawaytrom

secure because of her recent
security alliance with Russia
without which the present war

ASKING GOD'S BLESSING ON IT
An aged s~rva nt of Christ was inv•ted to tea one evenin8 at the home of a
gentleman who professed to be a Chr istian, but whos~ ltfe and ways were
worldly. The ma n of God, before leaving his home, spent some time in prayer, a~king help from God to witness for Him in the lamily whose guest he was
inv ited to be. After tea the lady of the house invited those present tfl have a
game of cards, to which the aged man of God made no demur.
Tl'!e cards w~re brought and laid upon the table. Just as the play was a bout
to begin, he arose and said:
"let us ask th~ bles!.ing of God upon what we
Everybody looked at each other in amaz~ment

are about to do."
They thought the man was
"I n~ver heard of such a thing before, Mr. , as asking God's blessing on a game of cards."
"lncleed," rep!i~d the man of God, "I never engage in anyth ing without
aski ng God to b!~ss me. I rem~mber that it is wrttten, 'WI'latsoever ye do in
word Of deed do aU in the Nam~ of th~ lord Jesus, glvtng thanks to God!' (Co l. 3:111
"If you cannot ask God to bless you m playing cards. that most clearly
proves that you ought not !o play cards at aiL"
The reproof had its ~ffect: the cards were !aid aside, and, it is said, were never used in that home again.
There is a lesson lor you, dear r~ad~r. tn answer to the man of God. If you
cannot hon~stly ask God to bless you in wh at you do, you may safely conclude
that it is not of Him, If you find youself ~ngaged in doi ng something that you
cannot do "in the Name of th~ l ord Jesus," the n that ought not to be done at all.
Th is simple a nd God-given t~st applied, would settle hu ndreds of q uestion5
that rise up in our daily path, as tn tl'!e "right" or wrong" of certain things.
Some say they "see no harm" in certain "recreations". They say that they are only
"innocent amusemenls," and that a Cl'!ristia n may share th~m without hurt to
his spiritual life. This sounds very well, but it is the devil's soph istry.
The standard by wh•c h God's child must t~st the "right" and the "wrong"
of everythins. is not . by its "innocenc~" or_ "harm,". but by, Is it for the rlory of
God? Can Hrs blessmg be eJCpected upon tt? Can •I be done in the Name of the
lord J~sus? If not, then clearly 1t is not tor you, a5 a Christian, to engage in.

The Earlh Broughl Forth
Evolutioniats may point out that Cen~sls teaches lha.t
the ~arth brousttt forth gra.ss and trees. (Gen. l :Il-
12) This Is true , but the earth did It at tbe command
ot God--betng ~mabled by COO. and oot due to natural

U othe r paasagu Indicated that God dld II throul(h a
p roc~M of evolution. r wou.ld acc~pt 11, but oelther
Genesla nor other pu.ages so tl!ac:h. Furthermore,
Genesis teaches that plants and trees and anJmat.
bring lorlh att~r the ir own ldnd. Evolullon t~ach~s that
over a long period of time one k.J nd produced another
kind.
Maa Evolve?
EvolullonJsts ar~ just as positive that man evolveo
as they are that plant and animal life evolved. Coo-
ststent ~voluttonlem cannot accept the nalural evol-
ution of plants and an.! mala, and the a~rnatural creation
ot man. G~nesta, how~t'er, Is v~ry clear that man Ia
not the product of evolution.. First, evolution teaches
that animaJldnd prodlced mankind, but Cenesla teachea
that animals produce alt~r their own ldnd. (Gen.I:24·
25). God dtd not '.ake an animal and out olit tuhlon
man; inst&ad1 He fuhloaed man out ot the <ll~ of the
earth. (Gen. 2:7). It may be replled that eome-tim~s
the Bible skips certaJ.n steps withOut denytnr their
existence. For exampl~, Cen# l:Z'I a28 ml&bt seem to
imply that man and woman were created at the aame
time, but Geoests two .-::hows lllat woman wa.a c::reat~

be that there were Inter mediate steps betwee n the llD•

oat Maytnr their e xt..tence. <Air next point, w~ are
