• A MESSAGE FROM THE POLLS
The Freeway Fighters certainly de -
serve credit for last week's City Council
election results in Newport Beach. Paul
Ryckoff and John Store, who scored de -
cis! ve victories over incumbent mayor
Ed Hirth and former councilman Dee
Cook, both were active participants in
the fight to keep the freeway out of our
town. And however solemnly Ed Hirth
and Dee Cook pledged themselves to
abide by the will of the overwhelming
majority, the voters last week had long
memories, and r e membere d that both
had actively opposed the anti-freeway
initiative . The impressive margin in last
week's election was a convincing r e af-
firmation of the voters' continuing stand
against the freeway.
Dee Cook's pledge of obedience did
not last long. He was quoted the day
following his stunning defeat as saying
that the election was a vi ctor y for the
freeway lunatics. By official count, there
were well over 6,000 of those "lunatics"
voicing their opinion at the polls last
week. And a year ago last March 9,
the "lunatic" total was mor e than 11,000,
gtvmg a r esounding approval for res-
c inding the agreement for a coast free-
way through our wonderful community.
I would say that it is mor e correct
to say that there is a lunatic fringe
that still wants to overthrow the clearly
expr essed will of the local residents
and to start those freeway bulldozers
rumbling through our town, wrecking
more than 700 homes and businesses and
dr iving more than 3,000 people from
their homes.
Will the r eal lunatics please stand up!

• CITIZEN SAFEGUARD ON SPENDING
Our purse-stealing inflation is caused
by deficit federal spending, and this
squandering of our tax money is made
possible by the fact that the U. S. is no
long er on the gold standard. Our safe-
guard against the deficit spenders would
be the r eturn t o the gold standard. How
this works is explained by Tom Rose,
writing in the April 9 Santa Ana Register:
• • •
When a countr y Is on a gold sb.nc:la.rd, the amount of money
in circulation Is tied to the amount or gold held In reserve
by the gover nment treasury, When the gold reserve rises,
the money supply can be Inflated through the banking system,
and prices wtll tend to rise as a result. When the amoWI I
of gold hek1 by the treasury falls, the opposite happens. The
money SlWIY will be restricted, and prices will lead to fall.
How does the right to own gold g:tve cltlzens ecooomlc
power over poUUeians liDder a gold standard? In this way:
When poUttela.ns engage In defl elt spending they must either
borrow the money they want to speoct, or they must ereate
It by tnnatlng the money &ICJPIY. Since It Is easier to !Dilate
thltl to borrow, pollttet.ans usually ehoose to Inflate. To
the utent that they do tnts, they lep.lly rob ettaens of their
ll&l'd-earned wealth. a• wbeo some of the more astute eltlsen.s become aware
ot th1t robbery, they become worried and ltart eublog lD

Death ls not lhe trtfle that so many nonchal-
antly make It ln our day, but a terrible thing
that no human mind can think seriously about
without apprehension and fear. But to all who
know and believe In Christ as their God and Sa·
vtor, the resurrection of Olrist ts a great con·
solation; It gives them the power to conquer the
fears of death and to look upon their death as a
sleep from which they shall be awakened some
day ln perfect righteousness and holiness by Him
who so gloriously rose from the dead on the third
day, to live with God forever. The believing
Chrbtlan can say with Luther: "And· will at the
last Day raise up me and all the dead and give un -
to me and all believers In Christ eternal life."
I cleave now and forever
To Christ, a member tne;

IT WAS NOT SAFE
Author Unknown
There 1s a story of Or. Chalmers. A lady came to n1m and sald-
"Doc:or, t cannot bring my child to Christ. We ta!ked, and talked but 1t's
Ill) use.
The doctor thought she had not much sktll, and said, "Now you b:! q111et,
and I wilt talk to her atone."
When he 11:01 the ~irl atone he said to her; "They are bother1ns you a good
deal about this quest1on; now suppose 1 just tell your mother you don't want
to be ta lke:l to any more upon this subject lor a year. How will that do?"
Well, the Scotch lassie hesitate:! a little, an:! then sa1d she didn't thmk 11
wou ld be safe to wait for a year. Someth ing might turn up. She might die
before then.
"That's so," repl ied the doctor, ''but suppo$e we say Sl~ months,"
She didn't think even th is wootd be safe.
"..Veil, let us say three months," was the doctor's reply.
Atte· a tittle hesitation, the girl finally sa•d. "I don't th1nk 11 would be
s.afe to put 1! off for th ree munths-1 doo't think 11 would be safe to put 11 off
at all," and they went down on the~r knet:s and she found Ct.rist.
But there Is even more comfort and joy for
us 1n the resurrection of Olrist If we keep In
mind the reason for which He was put to death.
He, was cructtled, dead, and buried to pay the
wages of our sins and transgression 1n the sight
of God. The question might be raised: Did He
succeed? Hls resurrection proves that He did : 11
demonstrates that His death IS the victory over
He treads the world beneath

(COHTINUEO FROM LAST WI!:EK )
Ortc.n, born In 185 A.D., wrote four volumes which
are preaerved to this day. Tbat the New Testament
was a wtdely used book ~ his day, we know from tbe
number of quotations be makes from lt. He quotes from
practically every Book of the New Testament . .U for
the Gospel&-lle records 1352 quotaUons from Mat-
thew; '1:15 f'ro1&. ·Ma·dl; 649 from -~ and 7'75 from
John, and so on through the W'~tafient quottnc
mo re than 5000 passqes from these 21 New Testament
Booka. Ma.rr.y of the qUOtatiOIIS pertain to the Resurrec-
tJon of Jesus from tbe dead on the thJrd.day.
A TTJTUDE OF CHRIST'S FOLLOWERS CHANGED
A stronc evidence for the-reUabUity of the Resur-
rectJon 1$ found ln the different attitude of the dlsctples
jUSt before and after the Lord's Resurrection. Im-
mediatelY after the crucUU.Ion the poup Is sprttually
crushed. Think or the conversation o f the two Emmaus
disciples (we trustED ~ote the past tense); and the
meetinc of the disciples beblnd closed doors and wlndows
for fear of the Jews. Tbe picture is that of a dtsplrtled,
down-bearted, de)ected group, shattered by the calamity
that bad overtaken them, and afraid to show themselves.
But the dttference a short Ume later (alter they had
SEEN the Risen Lord and were thus convinced or ,Jhe
Resurrection) is startling. These same men preath
Christ ot~ealy in the Temple area; ro to prison jay·
fully ; when broucbt before the CouncU of the Jews op-
enly defied them and refuse to lr:eep sUent, saying: "We
cuftOt but Jpea.k the thincs that we have seen and
heard." And they wUltncly died for their faith.
How eecoUDt for the chance in His fo llowers un-
leas somet.blng baJII)elled that made them so confident
that not even the threat of death could aUence them.
SDIOM PETER
Typical ?f tbe uperleoce of the Church in Jenera!
ts that of Slmoa Pete-r. When Jesus was arrested,
Peter, in terror, shamefully denied Hla Lord three
tJmes. But Just seven weeks later, on Pentecoat when
three thousand were converted to the faith , It Ia tbe
same Peter who atands boldly before the aaaembled
multHude 1n Jerusalem and speaka these challenriDC
words: "Ye men of Israel, bear these words: Jesus
of Nazareth, a man approved amonc you by miracles
and WODders and sips, wbicb God did by Him 1n the
midst of you, u ye yourselves know ... Him, betnc' de-
livered by the determinate counsel and toretnowledce
of God, ye have taken, and by wicked bands have cru-
cttied and 11ai.D WHOM GOD HATH RAISED UP, hav-
ing loosed the painaofdeath: beeauae It was not possible
that He abould be holden of tt." And on another oc:cu-
ion be stated boldly: "Ye kllled the Prince of Llte
Wbom God batb reised trom thtt dead.'' And when at
the Gate BN.utu\11 at the Temple, the lame man wu
mlraclllou.aly healed, Peter said that be wu healed
by the power of the Jl1HD Chriat.

And so tbe evidences for Christ's Resurrecuoo ac-

is so well attested and authentl.cated as the Res urrec-

Emperor when Jesus was c rucified and risen from
the dead.
RELEVANCY Of THE RESURRECTION
Now since-the evidences plle up tndlcattng that the
Re.urrectiOD of J esus occurred, then we must believe
that He Is the Son or God and the Messiah-Saviour of the
world. Tben we must beUeve that Hla death brougbt
about our reconetllation wtth the Father. Then we muat
beHeve that Hl.a dedarations ln Scripture are the truth,
that His propbedes a.r e fultiUed, and that His prom-
