• PLAIN TALK FOR REPUBLICANS
County assessor Andrew Hinshaw Is
hitting hard at Representative John
G, Schmitz, with charges that our local
congressman has failed to support the
policies and programs of his party leader,
President Nixon.
Mr. Hinshaw pledges his support of
those policies and programs In his bid
to win the Republican nomination for the
39th district seat In the June 6 election.
U Mr, Hinshaw means what he says
In these campaign promises and in his
attack on Mr, Schmitz's record In Con-
gress, then the following must be true:
• Mr, Hinshaw must be In favor of
the deficit budgets of President ' Nixon,
which w111 Increase the public debt by as
much as ONE HUNDRED BILLION DOL-
LARS during 4 years as president.
• Mr. Hinshaw must be in favor of the
guaranteed annual income s o energetically
sought by President Nixon, which would
double our alreacly qeJD:imltlng weUare
costs, take away the Incentive for -pro-
ductive employment, and add additional
b1llions to the awesome public debt.
• Mr, Hinshaw must go along with
President Nixon's embrace of Keynesian
economics, which is based on deficit
federal spending, causing a steady erosion
in the value of the dollar as the public
debt keeps mounting.
• Mr, Hinshaw must be in favor of the
administration's revenue sharing pro-
posal, which would further concentrate
power in the federal government, in-
evitably resulting in more increase in
the public debt and in the inflation spiral.
• Mr. Hinshaw must be in favor of the
"added -value" tax, which has been tossed
up as a trial balloon by the administration,
and which Is an insidious tax because it
is a series of hidden taxes camouflaged
in the rising retail price of commodities,
puttlng the blame wrongfully on retailers
Instead of on the federal government,
where It belongs,
• Mr, Hinshaw must be In favor of
price and wage control, which President
Nixon has Invoked in violation of solemn
and often repeated pre-election promises,
and which have been conclusively proven
throughout history to be not only lneffectl ve
but actually a boomerang, because It
tackles the symptom (high prices) and not
the cause (deficit federal spending ).
• Mr, Hinshaw must be In favor of
promoting more trade with communist
countries --Including Soviet Russia and
Red China, which nations are providing
much of the war supplies that are k1lllng
our soldiers In Vietnam,
I
These Issues :represent the baSic prob-
lems facing our nation In these critical
days, U Mr. Hinshaw means what he says

THE CAPTAIN FROM
OLD MEXICO
One day I wu notified that
three airplane pilots from Old
Mexico were in Chicago and
woukl like aomeone to show
them the "1i1hts" of that great
city. I picked them up at their
hotel in the Loop and took them
to 11M the Moody Bible Institute
and the Moody Memorial
Church. Then we viaited
Chicaco'a Loop and aaw the
famocu Wri1ley Buildinl', the
hup Merchandise Mart, the
Union Depot and the
•ubterranean 1treeta that run
beneath aome of the rreat
avenues of downtown Chical'o.
We vit.ited the planetariu,m
and then the famous Field
Mu.eum of Natural H ist.ory.
The leader of the rroup and
the only one who could speak
Enl'lish was a young captain
who was trained as a fighter
pilot. He was friendly and
intellisent and as he and I
talked. he tran sla ted our
conversation to his companions.
GOD DIDNT LOOK LIKE THAT I
This great museum is famous
for many things but, to me, the
most interutinli' are the
in&enious displays of animal lire.
The famous hunter a nd
uploret, Carl Akeley, returned
from Africa with the 1kins of
many wild animals and these
have been restored by wonderful
ta:.:idermy work and set in 1uch
natural looking displays that the
animals look as though they
were alive and the aettinp look
real.
When we came C.O the displays
of prehiatoric men and women,
the men were abaolutely
fascinated by the figures of
apemen hunting, gnawing on
raw bones, etc.
Aa we razed at these fii'Ures,
the captain smiled and said,
"How foolish for anyone c.o
believe there were ever creatures
like these! I auure you that the
fint men to walk on this earth
did not look anything like these
half-man and half·beast
creatures."
I heartily agreed with him and
he continued .
"The Bible says God made
man in Hi& own image." Then,
as he pointed to the figures of the
prehistoric people, he continued,
"God certainly never looked like
that!"
He went on to say that early
men looked like Jesus C hrist.
His proof: ~cause God made
man in Hia own image and the
Bible tays that Jesus was made
in "the npreu image" o(God.
WHAT ABOUT CAVE MEN7
I have received many lett.en

which iP'orant men lived in

On the way back the water was
ao muddy that there was no way
of ~llinl' how deep it was and I
atepped into a hole up to my
armpits. A1 I turned to climb
out, my richt boot atu ck in the
mud and my foot came out of it. I
be1an feelinr around with my
foot, tryinr to locate that boot
arain and couldn't find it. I
atood there in that filthy

all around and couldn't feel that

dove under the water and felt
around with my banda until I
found it! When I came back to

this cloae. At we watched, a
IP'eat bir nONy bulllaft the herd
and be1an walltinr toward us.
Austin, Claudon and I Jum.l*t
for our rifles and I , dreased only
i.n a pair of l(l'een aborts, jumped
into the bed of the pic:ksup. The
bla bull continued to walk
toward ua. "If he PUHI that
little bush," Claudon aaid, "let's
fire into the air. If he doean't
turn tail and run he will attack.
If we can't atop him we are in
real trouble so ahoot to kill."
I steadied the barrel of my rille
acrou the truck rack and
watched the approachinl'
elephant down the sites of my
rifle. J hoped ole jumbo would
pau the desienated bush. At the
moment I was mad at every
elephant on earth and especially
those that had been usinl' the
Semliki as a bathroom. I
wondered bitterly why J had ever
liven a pachyderm a peanut! If
that. bi.r idiot passed that bush I
waa goinr to knock him down
with my rifle-and then pour a
cup of that water down him to
polish him off!
The IJI'eat beast walked up C.O
the bush and stopped as thourh
he had read our minds. He stood
there eyeinl' us for two or three
minutes and then abruptly
turned and joined his
companiona who were now
makinr their way down to the
river.
When 1 walked back into
camp I was a si~~:ht to behold. I
was wet and muddy and smelled
like an out-house. I plopped
down on the rround and asked
one of the natives to bring me
some nay phew, some hot (boiled )
water. Instead of water, h e
handed me what I took to be a
cup o( very strong coffee. I took
one look at it and said to Bwano
Paul, "He didn't understand
me. I want my phew, n ot coffee."
Bwono Paul grinned and said ,
"That ia my phew-there's no
coffee in it."
We put our I'Uns down. "I aure
would hate to have a liant like
that walk in on me
unexpectedly," Claudon said.
"He didn't mean any harm,"
BWGno Paul I'J'inned, "he ju1t
came da.e enourh to l'et a 10od
look at Bill. That elephant had
never seen a Great White Hunter
in rreen shorts before!" 1 tasted it-and promptly
threw up! It was too phew·y!
"Put some coffee in it," I said,
"and I'll try it ag8in ."
After I had re.ted a bit I took
off the filthy dothes I had been
wearinr and a couple or our
natives poured buckets o( water
over me. It was the filthy water
from the river but at least it rot
rid ol the mud and slime.
I had just started to dreu
when, for the first time, a small
herd of elephants walked toward
our camp and then stopped
about three hundred yards
away. We often saw elephant.a in
the diatanc:e but this was the

How to Become
a Christian
By Dr. R. A. Torrey
!"ROM "SWORD OF THE l0R010
MUR,RE.I!SBOR~, TENN.
No one can be saved unless he is born again by the power of
God's Spiri~. C.hrist says. in John 3:7, "Ye must be born again."
The neceu1ty 18 absolute-ye must be born a1ain. Baptism will
not take the place of the new birth. One may be a baptized. lost
sinner.
No per(ormance of reli1ious
rites will take the place of the
new birth. A veal many ~pie
are depending upon the fact that
they say their prayers, read their
Bibles, go to church. partake of
the ·Sacrament, a nd perform
other duties; but all that will not
take the place o( the new birth. A
rreat many people are saying, "I
believe in the Apostle's Creed· I
believe in the Nicene Creed.' I
believe in the Athanuian Cr~: ~ say the Catechism. I am
orthodoi, I hold rirht views
about Christ, rirht view• about
the Bible, right views about the
Atonement." You can be
orthodoi upon every doctrine
and yet be lc:.t forever.
Culture and refinement and
outward correctness of life will
not take the place of the new
birth. The trouble ia not merely
with our outward life: the
trouble is in the heart. in the
very deepest deptha of our
inward life. and merely to reform
your outward life will not uve
you.

Suppose I had a rotten apple. I
could take that apple to an
artist. have him put a coating of
wu upon it, and then paint it
till it waa the moet beautiful

it would be just as rotten at heart
as ever, and one bite into it
would be a bite into decay. The
trouble is that out of Christ you
are wrong in heart, and mere
culture, mere refinement, mere
respectability, mere morality, ia

the answer but you've wasted your time.
Suddenly your instructor says,
"Time is up. Hand in your papers.''
Then, even though you try to write 8 few
words, it is too late!
I faced the supreme examination.
I tried to evade it.
I tried to transfer t he responsibility.
I tried to shift the blame.
I thought I could get out oi it.
And suddenly I heard a voice.
"Time is up! Hand in your decision."
And I, Pontius Pilate, failed the examination
J was jn charge of a large area of Palestine ·
representi ng the Roman government. I had ' ~orked in ~hat. area for ten years. The emperor
m Rome, T1bef!us Caesar, was pleased with my
work. J built myself a beautiful palace. I got
along with the Jewish people even though J
detested their legalistic religion.
You think I was a cruel,
h8rd·hearted Roman judge.
Please understand I fought K battle within
my soul.
. I had an inner struggle similar to yours.
Th1s is how it happened ...
A lot of hosti lity had arisen against a man
named Jesus. Some activists in that anti.Jesus
movement came during the night to my palace.
They wou ld not step ilaside.
They sent a messenger and told me to
come out to them.
J walked to the balcony where I could see.
and it was quite 8 crowd.
They had with them a man.
They were treating him roughly and were
shouting things I couldn't understand.
And then they said to me,
"We have a prisoner. We want you to
judge him."
I asked,
"What accUsation do you have against this
man?"
They replied,
"If we didn't have an accusation, we
wouldn't have brol!ght him to you."
I said to them,
"Take him and try him according to
your laws."
But then I heard their answer,
"No."
"Why not?"
"According to our laws,
we cannot put a man to death."
That was it. They wanted this man's lite.
I ordered them to bring the man up. He stood
before me and before the crowd.
1 looked into his face.
I thought I would see hostility or hatred,
or hear whimpering and whining.
No! There was calmness.
I saw him gaze out at the crowd with
compa81!1ion. I had looked into the faceA of many
priaonen before but never one like thia. So I
aaked him some questions. Then J said to the
people,
• "I flnd no fault in this man. None at all!"
Somehow they wouldn't accept that. It wu .eo
noitY that one of their leaden, Cataphaa. climbed
the ateps toward my balcony. He held hla robe
thrht(y about him oo he wouldn't deftle hlm .. lf. He saJd,
"Thlt man i!l an inaurredionlat. He' a a troublemaker."
I aaid,
"Colophoo, I'd Ulre to have a lot more mon like hlm In ftiT province. •
Then I turDOCI to tho man and &ald.

He replied,
"Yes. I am a King.
"But my Kingdom," he explained "Is not
of t.his world." We talked some more, ~nd once
agam 1 turned to the crowd:
"I find no fault in him at all. Take him and
try him according to your laws."
But Caiaphas wouldn't give up. He kept shouting
at me and I heard him me ntion "Galilee " I said
"Did you say 'Galilee'?" · '
He said, "Yes."
I asked,
"Do you mean this man is from Galilee?"
"Yes, yes."
"My jurisdiction," I told Caiaphas "doe!
!lot include Galilee. That belongs to He~ and
1t so happens he is in Jerusalem tonight ~~~ying at his palace." '
I turned to my guard :
"Take this man to Herod."
I swung around and went into my room, but
somehow I knew I was not through with him.
I knew l'd face him again.
Looking out my window, I watched the
crowd break up. My soldiers were there and they
were rough with thi8 man. My heart w~nt out to
him. I tried to eat, to drink.
I couldn't.
My mind reeled with the thought of the PeMIOn I h~d just m":,t . I knew he was 8 noted teacher. My
w1fe, Claudia, had heard him a few times.
One day she had come home and said
"This man even performs miracles."'
This was too much for me, but some of his teach?
ing about justice and truth and love had im~ pressed me.
It was only a short time until I heard the
crowd return. They had the prisoner with them.
Herod, that fox, was sending him back to me.
Suddenly I had an idea. I said to the guard
"Go to the inner dungeon and bring up
Barabbas."
"Barabbas, sir?"
"Yes, Barabbas."
And soon I had the two men standing there to-gether.
Barabbas, the rebel. the murderer,
J esus, the Teacher, the Realer the Helper
I called the people together and said, ·
"Which of these two shall I set free?
Bar8bbas, the insurgent, the killer. or
Jesus, who is called Christ?''
I couldn't believe what I heard.
They shouted,
"Barabbas. Barabbas! Release Barabbas!"
I gave an order to my guard :
"Untie Barabbas."
I said to him,
"You're free.'' (Continued Nut Week)

You certainly wouldn't If you happen lo be one of the 1.000.000
Californians who work directty In the transportation industry! You'd
lose your job within a few days after election.
And If you think about It for a minute or two, you realize that no
matter what you do for a living, you'd be In serious trouble.
Businesses of all kinds would no longer be able to mar1c:et their
products.
Farm crops would rot In the fields and on the trees.
Unemployment would reach staggering proportions.
You wouldn't be able to provide yourself and your family with the
basic necessities of life!
Nobody In hla right mind would vote "yea" on such a stupid, vicious
proposal. Yet lhat'a whal you're being uked IO do when you go to the
polls on June 6 to vote on Proposition No. 9 -the Pollution lnltlattve.
Down In the fine print, Propo~ltion No . 9 contains an lnnocent-
aoundlng provision limiting the content of sulfur In diesel fuel ~ld for
use in internal combustion .engines In Callfoma to .035 per cent.
The limit now In effect Ia .5 per cent-14 timet as much I
The very small emount of dleael fuel now available that would meet
this ridiculous requirement lalnaufllclent even to flU the needs of public
transit buaea, which run on the lowest eulfur content diesel now In
production.
If Proposition No. 9 ahould pooo, lhe next day lhe great majority of
trucks and dleael-powered freight locomotlvea would have to stop
running -becauoo there would be no .. legal .. fuel available to operate
them I
It would take an undetermined period of tlme-IWO yeorw?-alx
yeara?-nobody knowo lor oure. before reflnerleo could be adapted at
enotmouo ._.. to produce dl-1 fool In the quanllty -to
meet our transportation neede.
Knowing lho foe .. : nobody In hlo right mind would vote lor Propool-
