* NOW TRY PROVE STEALING WRONG
From time to time I have quoted this
doleful lament of the conservative, looking
back at the losing battle against social-
istic legislation:
There was a time when it was necessary
only to point out that a proposed program
was socialis~ic, and it would be rejected,
Then came the time when U became
necessary to show that socialism is steal-
ing, and for that reason socialistic legisla-
tion must be turned down. Now we have
to try to prove that stealing Is wrong.
This recitation Is prompted by the
alarming and incredible popularity of
Senator George McGovern at the polls.
Here is a U. S. senaior, supposedly a
Democrat, front-runner in the Democrat
race for U. S. president, running on a
platform of full-blo:wn socialism --and
selling it! Have we come to this perilous
stage in our decline from greatness --
that the majority of our citizens will
back a candidate who Is basing his political
campaign on the boldly publicized scheme
to plunder the rich to give to the poor!
Tbe correct designation for this Robin
Hoodlum plot Is theft, however sweetly
the program is coated over with words
of compassion for ~~social welfare.''
In this time of rising clamor for ' 'honest
packaging" and '·consumer protection,"
let's get some Nader Raider to Impose
on Senator McGovern to do some honest
packaging, and identify his political can
of worms with the correct label of
11 Socialism.''

• "TAX REFORM" HITS US AGAIN
No doubt the revenue measure signed
into law by Governor Reagan last De-
cember came under the soothing designa-
tion · of "tax r eform." A little-known
element of this "reform" will make itself
painfully aware on July 1, when motorists
will start paying an additional 5 per cent
In sales tax on their gasoline purchases.
The price of a gallon of gas already
includes 7 cents for state motor vehicle
fuel tax and 4 cents for federal excise
tax. Now the price will go up another
2 cents-plus. Perhaps. this will help tax-
payers realize that the only true tax
reform is tax reduction, and the only way
this can be r ealized Is by cutting back
on the fearsome size of government. • • •
* ANOTHER ATTACK ON PROPERTY
Must the local property owner always
be on the alert for new legislaiive attacks
on the right of ownership? Once again
we are faced here in Newport Beach
with a new scheme for rezoning resi-
dential lots and further restricting the
use of our property.
An earlier effort initiated by the
city's Planning Commission attempted
to effect this infringement by requiring
more offstreet parking per unit. This
scheme was shot down because of its
obvious inequity. Now comes a more
subtle and deviou8 method of creating a
new zone, called R-1,5. The first step
18 the enabllng legislation, now before
our City Council. Approval 18 highly

With athletes. (And just plain good sports.) They like Park West
recreation. It outdoes every other apartment comple~; In the area.
There's a three-acre activity park. Filled with awlmmlng and !her·

t:!d, this sure would be a good
ime for a little old base hit."
I don't believe in praying for
hits and runs, but the circumstances
called for something. Our Chicago
Cubs were in what the sports writers
call a "crooshal" series with Pitts-
burgh in September, 1970. The Pi-
rates were two games ahead of us
in the National League standings,
and only two a nd a half weeks re-
mained in the playing season.
. On this particular afternoon at
Wrigley Field we trailed 2-1 with
two men out in the ninth inning.
Willie Smith, a pinch hitter, sent
a fly ball into center field. It s hould
have made the third out. but some-
how the center fielder lost the ball
in the sun and it fell in for a double.
Out of nowhere--life! Now we were
at the top of the batting order and
I was leading off. •
As I walked to the plate I talked
to the Lord about this being the
time. Then Steve Blass, t he Pirate
pitcher, threw a slider and J poked
the ball into rig ht field for a single.
driving in the tying run. I went
steaming into first ba~e with a
"hallelujah" on my lips. Glenn Beck-
ert and Billy Williams followed with
base hits so I romped home with the
winning run.
That evening I was in church with
my family as is our custom when the
Cubs are in town, a nd following the
evening service t he pastor came by.
As I was standing there with my
two children, he looked at Keith,
who was three years old. and said,
"Son, did you help y6ur daddy get
that base h it today?'' And w ith no
hesitation whatever , Keith looked at
him and said, "No, sir, God did !"
I guess it was natural for me as a
Christian to call on the Lord for
help. Since I was 12 years old I have
known that Jesus Christ is with me
an~ that I would be nothing without
him. The Lord blessed me by giving
me wonderful Christian parents.
While 1 was growing up in Forrest
City, Arkansas, my dad used to Say
to me. "Son. wh atever you do, do it
to the best of your ability. And while
you'l'"e doing it, have fun." You might
say he was being prophetic.
At the -age of 12 two things hap--
pened to me that set the course for
my life. One of them had to do with
baseball. In 1954 Forrest City
fonned its own Little League team,
and I left the "blue jeans" loop that
I had been playing in almost from
the time I was able to walk. Little
League introduced me to the excite-
ment of playing before a hometown
crowd, and I knew that I wanted
eome d.aytoplay in the major leagues.
The other thing that happened
concerned my relationship to God.
I went forward one Sunday mom-
In&" In the Church of Christ where our family attended, and made pu~
lie "'1 decision to let Jeauo Christ be
"'1 Lord and Savior. Putor HalT)'
Rice took my hand and prayed with
me, and laU.r that day he baptized

While I considered myself a Chris-
tian during those university· years,
I was not emitting Jesus Christ from
my life. I kept on attending church,
but spiritually I was in a dry spell.
Then in my junior year the Lord
sent along a wonderful Christian
girl from my hometown , Carolyn
Crawley. I had known her for years,
of course - she had g rown up four
blocks from our home. But now. all
of a sudden -! Anyway, it was a
case of hometown s weethearts find-
ing each other, and in February.
1965, we we re married.
Carolyn and I had some church
differences, and we wanted to found
our horne on a solid spiritual basis.
So we spent six months prayi ng a nd
studying t he Bible together and de-
ciding which church was right for
us. This got us off t o a good start.
for we fou nd that we could discuss
thing11o and go to th e Bible for the
answers. We held ou r devotions to-
gether. When our boys came along,
they joined us.
Meanwhile I had signed with the
Chicago Cubs and set out to make
baseball my career. I had been cov-
ering shortst op since J was eight
years old, and it proved to be my
natural position. I like action, and
ther e's plenty of it in the hole.
They say t he sho rt~top can make
or break the t eam. r know that I
have to think con~tantly about the
game i'ituation. Is t he man at the
plate going to "pull" or isn't he?
That is. will he try to send it in my
direction '? Is he ahead of th e pitcher
in balls a nd strike~. or behind him?
Is it early in the gam e or late?
Whatever the condition, I keep say-
ing, "Hit the ball to me.'' That's the
way you have to h ave it.
We had some improving seasons,
and [ began to see the Lord working
in my teammates and in my own
life. We formed some Bible study
groups among t he ball players and
their wives, and got involved with
the Fellows hip of Christian Athletes.
We started a S unday morning chapel
service. Now, when we're on the
road, we usually reserve a meeting
room in our hotel and invite some-
one to speak to us. Often as many as
20 players will attend. Randy Hund-
ley and Phil Regan were instrumen-
tal in getting the services started.
Last year while we were flying
into Atlanta a young rookie on our
team sat down beside me. lie asked
me about something that was said in
chapel that morning, and as we
talked, the opportunity opened for
me to tell him what he had to do to
invite the Lord into his life. In •!>out
five minutes he turned to me and
said, "You know. I just did it and I
feel great." In our ftr!Jt game at
Atlanta he was hurt and was sent
to one of our farm clubs, and I
didn't see him all season. Last win-
ter he called me and said, "Don , I
just wanted to tell you that what I
did on the airplane that night going
into Atlanta wu real. I came home
after the sea&On and went forward
in my church, publicly profeMin«
faith in Christ, and was baptized."
I believe God gives every man
and woman a · chance. I know he hu
given me some great chances. He
hu hit the ball to me a good many
times. Once I collected six hits in
six times at bAt and won a standing
ovation ,at Wrigley Field. For the
l)aat four yean they have c:hoeen me
on the National Leall"• All-Star
team. In 1169 I J!layed In 54 con..

Q. ]unction City, Kan. "Were Mary
and Jos.eph married at the time of
Christ's birth, dr were they just en-
gaged a S a number of translations
indicate? What does the word 'es-
poused' mean?"
A. look at Mallhe w 1:18 for th is
reference as the term literally
means "to ask in marriage," "to
become engaged." Matthew 1:24
shows that by the time of the birth
of Christ Joseph and Mary were
married. It wac; when they were
engaged, before they had come
together, that she was "found wieh
child by the Holy Chost."
Q. luhler, ~Coin. "In fohn 11 did
Mary and Martha believe and ex-
pect fesus to raise Lazarus from
the dead when He came to their
home?"
A. There are those who have ar-
gued effectively on both sides of
that question. As you study the
chapter it appears that Martha be-
lie ved perhaps the lord could have
done it, but she did not believe
that He would do it. On the other
hand, Mary seems to have had no
question about lhe matter (vs. 32).
When you get right. down to it,
Jesus was not actually doing lazar-
us any favor in bringing him back
to life. After a time he had to die
all over again. That must have been
some experience! All of this· was
another sign, as John puts it, ''These
things are written that ye might
believe that Jesus is the Christ, the
Son of the living God."
Q. Sheritlan, Ore. "I know that sin
bre~ks fellowship with Cod VJd

iniquities to Him, ~nd rh~n, rely-
ins upon Him tor strenJfh, to be
able to forsake the problem. Still,
I do not underst•nd how Cod c.an
lorsive all sins •t t~ crou, but yet

A. first of all, sin does absolutely
break lellowshlp with God (I John
1:7-9). When a believer has un·
confessed sin in hlo life the In ·
dWelling Spirit Is still there for He
has promiJed never to teave or for-

ment we are saved, we are adually
made sons and daughters of God.
After that, when we live out of fel-
lowship we cannot realize the full
potential of our blessed relation-
ship (I Corinthiahs 6 :17, Ephesians
1; 7,1. When Christ died for our sins,
every one of them was future. This
positional forgiveness therefore is
eternal. The other phase of it might
be illustrated by a child who, when
he sins, is not disowned, but must
be .disciplined. This is what iS in -
volved here.
Q. Sealtle, Wuh. "In I John 5:16,
regarding the sin unto death, why
is i! that the Apostle does not rec-
ommend praying for the individ-
ual?"
A. The. secret is found ift the mean-
ing of the words, "sin unto death."
This involves not just any sin. It is
a transgression which issues in ac-
tual physical expiration. The con-
text reveals the Spirit speaking
about the strong assurance we
have in knowing that when we
pray God hears us (5:1 .. ). First of
all, the use of the word "'brother"
(vs. 16) indicates that this is com-
mitted by a Christian. When Jere-
miah saw Israel deep in sin he
wanted to pray for them. God told
him that they had sinned away too
many opportunities of His grace
and mercy. God's patience and
Jongsutfering had been exhausted.
They had forfeited the opportunity
or life itsell. Because they hod op·
posed His will there was no pur·
pose of their being on earth at all.
SomeQne has facetiously Silid, "If
you do the will of the Lord, He will
take you home and crown you. If
you do not, He will aown .you
and take you home." This refers
to the sin unto death. We should
not consider every premature death
of • Chrlstlon as being caused by
this. We must re~lize th~t though
we are .Mved eternally, we are nev-
er beyond the reocit qf a sover·
elgn Cod. He •s a disciplinarian .
While we receive His Jove, yet we
are to respond In obedJence.

A simple poem came to my
desk a few da:YS aro. Tbe title is,
"Does Jesua Live at Your
Hou.e?" Let me read it to you:
"DoH Jesus live at your house'!"
I heard a chlld once ask:
Her little brow wu furrowed
A• abe 1truerled with a task,
I saw her ey" were shadowed,
Her {ace marked with a tear;
The voice a wee bit wis~
For the answer she might
hear.
'"He used to live at our house.
With Mamma-Daddy, too,
But now He'a gone away
aomewhere
I don't know what to do,
For Daddy's not the same today,
And Mamma laughs no more,
They never bother much with
me.
They say I"m just a bore.
'"It didn 't use to be this way
WithJesua in our home,
For every night my Daddy came
When all my curls were
combed,
To help me say my bedtime
prayer.
(And Mamma helped me too.)
And they'd smile and tuck me
in,
But now-they never do.
··could you tell me where Jesus
is?
For everything seems black:
We want Him in our house again
We want Him to come back.
And when He comes we'll keep
Him
For we truly need Him 110-
If Jesus lives at your house,
Oht don't ever let Him go!'"
The child then turned and left
me
While I pursued my way
And thou~rht of many home-fires
That could be bri1ht today.
DoesJeaua live at your house?
How much thue words
portend
Yea! On thiaquntion'a answer,
Our h o pe a -our all-

Yes, there are aome homes
that were once diatinctly
Chri.ltian. but they are no more.
Certain thin1a took place, and
now the presence of Jesus is no
looter felt in the home. In !tOme
caM~. the makinr of money
became paramount. and
alle1iance to Chriat was
{orrotten. In other cases the
punuit of pleasure be1an to take
fint place, and the home
dilintepated. Yes. many homes
were once beautiful and happy
throuah the pre.ence of Chri•t.
but not today.
Arain. there are .ame homn
that have never known what it
meana to be Chriatian. They
have never honore'd
Christ-they have never received
Him. The tint peat eue:ntial in the
buikllnc of a Chriatian home ia
to receive Jeaut. He mutt be

over all things to the church."
And in Ephesians 5:23, ··for
the husband is the head of the
wife . even as C hrist is the head of
the church: and he is the Saviour
of the body."
The churc h is God 's
eva ngelizinK agenq· in this age.
We ca nn o t tgnore the
commission of our Saviour. Ht!
has given us Hi s co mmsnd to 11:0
into all the world and preach the
Gospel.
Therefore. 14"t" ~hould honor
the church by atttndin~ the
se rvices. The first step to a
backslidden Christian life is to
absent oneself from l he house of
God. I'm sure that one reason for
the sin king condition of so man)'
homes is the fai lurt-to alte nd the
house of God. When l say 1 hat
we ought to attend the 11erv ices of
the church. I speak of all of our
specified meetings. All of the
Sunday services should be
attended and the Wednesday
prayer service. Too many peaple
have a Sunday morning type of
religion. You can't build a
Chriattan home on anything aa
•hallow b that. You can.not tie
your home to the church of God
by a ainrle service on Sunday
morninJ. There art 168 hours in
the week; at leaat tix of theH
should be given to the Lord. and
as many more as we can.
Mothers and fathers need not
lament the wayward, drifting
condition of their children if
they persist in ataying away
from God's houae. J can name a
number of homes in our church
today where mother and father
ufiloed to attend rerularly, a nd
their children came with them.
Today, the parenta come only
occa•ionally, and the children
come not at all. Some parents
have told me that they do not
know what to do with their
children, for no amount o(
persuasion will brinr them to
church. Parenti, you are reaping
what you towed.
Again, we should honor the
church by riving our money. I
make no apology for aayin1 that
every child of God ahould be a
tither. and I aay without any
fear or contradiction that every
home would be bluaed
materially and apiritually if the
tithing plan were adopted and
followed. God baa had a plan in
everythinr He hat done, and He
has a financial prorram. I am
atill ready to rive $500.00 to
anyone who can produce a
conaiatent tither who is a be(lar,
or is forced to depend upon
welfare arenciea for his
tubsittence.
Thirdly, honor the church by
livinl yoUr Ulentt to the Lord'•
work. Thera ia •uch a detperate
need for work, even in • church

UCB interest
11 times a year,
not justA.
We're the only maJor California
bank that pays interest monthly
on regular savings.
So now if you want to use your
interest instead of leaving it in the
bank. you don't have to wait till
the end of a quarter to do it
If you don't want to use your
interest, you can just sit back and
watch it grow. Month after lucra-
tivemonth
Chances are, you can even get
the good news by mail. Because
our new, more informative
monthly statement-The Com-
Every month
a little more good news.
plete Statement-can show the status of your savings account right
along with your checking account and Balance Plus account.
Another point of interest. We not only pay it monthly. We com-
pound it daily. That means you actually end up earning more. Say,
for example, the current annual rate is 4%. Compounded daily, that
comes out to 4.08%.
Obviously, a UCB regular savings account does a h"ttle more for
your money.
So bring your cash in. And cash in .
