lbe: Bihlte always is our best dic-
tionary and authority on spiritual mat-
ters, and so we find in Genesis 22 : S
this statcn.ent pf Abraham, made to
his ~~ervanta: "Abide ye ben: with the
us; and I and the lad will go yonder
and wonhip, and come again to you."
Ths is the first usc of the word
"worship" in the Bible. 'lnen:fore,
if we will check to see what Abraham
and Isaac did dtJ.ring the intern.l be-
tween lea~~~~ tht servants and return-
ing to theln we should have a compre-
hensive ddinirioa of the rmanina: of
worship as they undentood it.
Tlfl fl ••m Of WORSHIP
The story is f;pniliar to all so that
I nttd not reyeat it here, but all l
will do is to show the things that they
did in their worship. Thtse are : ( 1 }
they obtyed God's directions without
questioning ; (1 } thto:y had fuJI con-
fidence that all things would work out
to God's glory and their peace and
joy; (3) they cxerci~d perfect faith
in God; ( 4 ) they erected an altar ded-
icattd to God; (5) they gave their
best to God; (6) Abraham offered to
sacrifice Isaac who, apparently, was
willing to be sacrificf:d; ( 7) Abraham
-and probably Isa;u: also -bdieved
that "God was able to raist' him
flsaac ) up, even f rom the dead";
(8) so, worship includes a belief in
the bodily resurrection (Heb. 11 : 19);
(9) they surrendered their wills com·
plettly to God ; ( 10) they trusted
God abdvtely and unconditionally ;
(II ) they did not exact or insist upon
rca:iving in advance frum God any
as.su~ for their safety or well be·
ing ; ( 12) Abraham proclaimed his
faith to his servants in the beglnnin~
by saying that he-and the lad would
return, even though he eJ~:ptcted to
offer him as a burnt offtting in the
meantime ; ( I J) God manifested His
grace by proviWttg the lamb to be
slain to save Isaac, as his substitute.
A I'RAYIII Of WO«SHIP
Frnm a srudy of these IJ ele~nt!,
it is evicknt that t rue "worship" im·
plieo and COI!1pf<hendo both life and
ck:ath and c:ompJett tubmiuion to the
will of God. w~ have a confinnation
of this ln Gendit 24 :26. Abraham's
terVant had cone to seek • bride (or
IONC in full amfidcnce that the .. Lord
God of my muter Abraham" would
prosper his quest. When be had fntt
Rebekah and she had voluntetted to
give wakr to his ten c:unell ( wbtdt
was no easy matter when tac:h c:anwl
probably could drink half a bon-d of
water) and when W had pnctic:ally
invited him and hia little c::ann.n to
come to her father's home to 1odge,
then he "bowed down his head and
worshipPCd the Lord." The record
(ives h1s prayer of wonhip: "Blessed
bt the: Lord God of my master Abra·
ham, who hath not left destitute my
master of hit me:rcy ant! hi.s truth : I
being in the way, the Lord led me to
the house of my muter't brethren.~
'flUE AND FALSI WOISIP
When the: tranaact.ion to obtain Re-
bekah's consent to go with him was
complete, then the aervant .. wor-
shipped the Lord, bowillf him.self to
the earth." Then ht-distributed prtw
cious gifts to Rebekah, her brother
and mother. Thus, true worship not
only hu the othtr IJ tlemmts, but
its fruitfulness is characterized by tht
giving of precious gihs to those worthy
to receive thm1. In Exodus 20, God
make~ it plain that He alone is the
proper object o{ wonhip. Thtte
must bt no other gods before Him;
no worship or bowing r!own as the
symbol of worship shall be made be-
fore images, idols. or likenesses "of
anything that is in heavm above, or
that is in the earth beneath, or that is
in th~ water under t~ earth." This
outaw~ many ceremonies and rituals
commonly followed by many who
claim to he 0\ristians. In fact, God
commanded H is people to have no fel-
lowship with peopt~ who worshiprd
imag~s and trees, but they must de·
stroy raise altan, break their images.
and cut down their ft'OVtl (Exod.
34 '12-14; Deut. 16 ,21, 22).
IN SPIRIT AND IN TlUTH
Satan believes in worship and
knows its tremendous meaning and
value because he promised Jesus that,
if He would worship him, he would
give Him all ·the kingdoms of thf:
whole world in a moment of time.
But Jesus answertd, .. Thou shalt WOI"·
ship the Lord thy God, and him only
shalt thou serve" (Luke • :8). He
explaint'd worship to the Samaritan
woman (John 4:13): .. The hour
r.ometh, and now is, when the true
worshipptrs shall worship the Fathu
in spirit and in truth : for the Father
sedl:eth such to worship him. God it

not able to undentand them at that
rime, but He .....-.ogecl that "when
he, the Spirit of truth, it come, he:
wiD guide you into all truth" (John
16 ,13). And the Holy Sp;rit 1oter
spoke throogh the apootln In these
mattert. In our lcs50n we have in-
structlons from the Holy Spirit
through Paul u to how true Chris--
tians, both male and female, should
obey and serve God in their daily
life so that their whole lives would
ht worshipful in God:• sight.
PlAYER IXPlESSIS OUl 'AITII
First, there must be three kinds of
prayer u: ( t) supplications, (2) in-
teroessions, and (J) giving of thanla:.
These prayers mutt be made (or all
men. Jesus did not need to pny for
the world b«ause He len~ who
would and who would not be saYee!
(John 17 :9), but we do not possess
infinite foreknowledge and so must
pray for all. Eapecially we must
pray "for kings and for e.ll that are in
authority." Our prayer for them is
that they might so use their authority
and worldly power "that we mty lead
a quiet and peaceful life in all godli-
~s and honesty." This will be ac-
ct.:ptahle to God our Saviour, beau!lt
He "will have all men to be saved,
and to cnme unto the knowledge of
the truth." And we are His earthly
agents.
A COMPLm EDUCATION
Pilate ask«!, "What is truth ?" The
world sttk, truth through philoso-
phy and s.cit':nce (sometimes falst':ly
so-called). Paul wrote that the world
is "ever learning, anrl never able to
('OfJlt' to tht knowlerlge of the truth."
Yet, here it is plainly stated : "Tbt
knowlf:dgt of the truth. For thert is
one God. and one rnt"diator bttwttn
God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
who gavt himse.lf a n.nJK>m for an ."
1f a person has learned ~nd appropri-
ated this truth to himself , then, in
C"-d's ai~ht, he is "educated." but, if
he has not learned this. tuen ht is not
educat~d in God's sight, but is stiU in
gros!l darkness. for wt are only fully
t>ducaterl when we are "complete in
h;m" (Col. 2'10).
WORSHIP CONTINUOUS
I understand that the word "mtdia-
tor" means not only an intercessor
or advocate but a ttu!lltt who takes
us over completdy, pays all of our ob-
ligations, ju.stifies att of our mistakes,
discharges us from bankruptcy, and
gives us our fr~om in Him, u chil·
dren of God. He asks u!l to c:ol"nl: to
Him. and He will ,rive us rest. which
implies that He will "settle up,. an
of our sinful matters (Matt. 11 ~).
and then, after yoking u.s to Himself,
He ha.s us "st:ttlc down" with Him
here and eternally in pes~ and jay
(Hcb. 4 :1-4 ). It is evident that no
nne t\se can bt: such a mediator, be--
caus.e no or.e elM gave himself u a
ransom for us. All of our livu on
this earth as Christians must be: Jived
in the reali1.ation that we are yoked
to our Lord to l~m of Him. and to
obey anrl Strve Him in continual wor-
ship. True worship it never a mtr't
formality.
WORSHIP FOR MIN AND WOMIH
As part of our worship we mutt
continually proclaim the Goapd to
othen for thtir salvation. Thit ap-
plies to women .. wen u men, uMI
