Remember that record-
breaking heat wave last year?
You weren't the only one
sweating it out.
So were we . The demand for
electricity hit an all-time
peak on September 13, 1971.
It was 13o/o higher than the
1970 peak.
We met all demands,
but our system was severely
strained.
But what about the years
ahead? Each year the demand
for electricity keeps right
on growing. New homes
keep going up. And schools.
Office buildings. Factories.
All will require additional
electricity. So will the
new equipment needed to
clean up the environment.
Unless Edison is permitted
to build additional power
plants and transmission lines,
it may become necessary to
blackout blocks of customers
on a rotational basis within
two or three years.
Yet permits necessary to
build any new major plants
have been delayed or blocked
for the past four years.

That's an immediate
problem. We're working hard
to resolve it.
The long-range problem
requires finding more ways
to conserve energy and to
use our nation's total energy
resources wisely.
That involves all of us.
In Edison's fossil-fueled
plants, for example, we're
now able to produce 30 %
more electricity from a unit
of fuel than in 1948.
That helps.
And by using higher-voltage
transmission Jines, we're
also able to deliver electricity
more efficiently.
Perhaps you can conserve
energy, too. Have you
considered ways to make
every kilowatt count at
home? We'll be happy to send
you a list of practical
suggestions.

Let me call your attenuou to the fact that He
has come into the world as the Light of men with-
out distinction, and 50 no one need walk in dark-
ness. And then again we .stt the comprehensive-
ness of His Saviourhood in the Gospel of John,
chapter J :29, "The next day John seeth Jesus
coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of
God, which {Think of it!] taketh away the sin of
the world."
In John 3 :17 we find that "God sent not his
Son into the worLd to condemn the world, but thlt
t~ world through him might be saved." That
~haws us the comprehensiveness c;tf it. And again
and again we are brought face to face with His
world-wide ministry. If any are lost and fac('
elt:rnal condemnation it certainly will not be tht
fault n { the Saviour, for H e i"' & sufficient Saviour.
In the second place, I would have you :see Jesus

ln the fourth place, I would have you to see
only Jesus as our PRIEST -not only a.s our
Propitiation, not only as our Pardoner. not only
as. our Power, but J would have you to see Jesus
only as our Priest. Now the did!l'! Scriptures tell
us plainly that there is onl v one Mediator between
God and ~n. and that iS the man Christ Jesus.
When we tum to the Epistle to the Hebrews we fi.IJd that it is literally 61Jed with facts concerning
t~ priesthood of our Lord Jesus Christ.. Many
peopl~ today are greatly concerned with a kind of
human pri'tsthood and ar~ ready at all times to
go and tell their troubles and their sins, their
iniquities and their wickedness, and their failures
to some man who has been dedicated as a pri~st,
but those people e vidently are iJOorant of the fact
or fail to r«<gtJize the Lord Jesus Christ as the
o"ly Mediator between God and men -the only
High Priest that Almighty God recognizes; upon
the face of the earth or in Heaven .above. I am ao
thankful today that I do not have to go t'b some
. earthly prit'~t or some preacher. pope •. Jr potentate
and there ask that I might have my sms forgiven,
but I can go straight to God , thrllugli the Lord
Jesus Christ. my H igh Priest. who today is at
the right hand of GOO makin~ inter~.~ssion for us.
I W\flt to call your atlention to one or two of
the passag~s in Hebrews that revea l llim as such.
In Hebrews 2 :17 we read, "Wht'refore in all
things it behoved him to be made like unto his
brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful
high priest in things pertaining to God, to make
rt"COOC.iliation for the sins of the people." That is
about Jesus Christ the Son of God, now at God 's
right hand, our great High Priest. Then we find
that this is a sympathetic pt"iestl\ood. In Hebrew!
4 :14-16 we read : "Seeing then that we have a
great high priest, that is passed into the heavens,
jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our pro..
fession. For we have not an hic'J prie!t which
cannot be touched with the feeling of our infinni-
ties : but was in all points temp~ like as we are,
yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto
the throne of en~. that we may obtain mercy,
and find grace to help in time of need." How
wMiderful that is! Not onl v do we fi.nd Him a
sympath~tic High Priest but-a divinely appointed
High Priest. In Hebrews 5 :5 and 6 we read : "So
also Christ glorifi ~ri not himself tQ be made an
high priest : but he that said unto him, Thou art
my Son, to day have I begotten thee. As ht saith
also in another ptace TMu art a pri~t for ever
after the order of Melchi.sed.ec:.'' Yes. and not only
that but we find that He is. an eternal Priest -
Hebrews 6:20, "Whither the: -forerunner is for us
entered, eYen Jesus, made an high priest for ever
aftrr the order of Melchiscdec ...
I alao want you to !ee Jesus only u our PAT·
TERN. "For I have riven you an example, that
ye shouJd dour have done to you" (John 13 :15).

clrcum!tances. The Chris·
tians described in the Book
of ohe Acu of tho Apoo-
tles, particularly those who
bet:t followed the instruction and in--
spiration of the Holy Spirit, teach by
example how Christians are expected
to conduct themselves; and most of
the epistles teach the same thing by
setting forth the principles upon
which Christians should act in order
to be good advenisefnents for their
Lord Jesus Christ. Philemon is dif-
ferent from the other epistles because
it illustrates great truths by relating
the history of an important event in
the life of the Apostle Paul, and is,
therefore, really a part of the acts of
this apostle, inspired by the Holy'
Spirit.
A SIMPLE STORY
The facts are simple. On~!limus
the household of
apparently, was a
wealthy Christian living in Colosse, a
city of western Asia about 100 miles
southeast of Ephesus and perhaps 15
miles south from l..aodicea. Onesi·
mus seems to have left Philemon
under unfriendly circumstances , prob·
ably rob~d him of something of
value and then fled the long di stance
to Rome. probably going over 100
mile" to somt' seaport and th~n work·
ing hi s way by small sailboat across
the Aegean Sea, the mouth of the
Adriatic. and up the coast of Italy to
Rome. It was a long and tedious
jnurney, but it all ended happily, for,
in -.orne undisd osed manner, Onesi-
mus •a me in conta\t with Paul. Prob.
ably h~ ha d seen Paul at Collosse
whtn Paul had preached there, and,
perhaps he had heard that Paul was
in jail in Rome and went to see him
to tell him his troubles and ask his
advice.
PAUL'S NECESSITY
The net result was that Onesimus
was gloriously sav~. and. in his aps
prt<'iation, he affe-ctionately adminis-
lered to Paul's nt"Cessities. But he
wa s still the property of Philemon
and Paul had no right to k~ stolen
property if he knew who ' was the
true ow ner. H money is stolen or
lost and it comes into the possession
of a Christ;an. he must make every
t'ffort to fi nd the owner and return it
to him, even tluJugh it would be very
helpful to him to keep it [or his own
use. This is Christian honesty. So
this was th~ position in which Paul
found himself. and he recognized that

turn to his masttt and take the con·

ning ••ay and theft.
PAUL'S ARGUMENT
But, alto, Paul felt now that Onesi~
mus had been born into the family
o( Jesus Christ, Philemon ahould
treat him as a brother in the Lord
rather than as a fanner slavt, thief,
and criminal refugee. So be wrote a
ahort letter to Philemon, ukioc for·
givenas and brotherly treatment by
him of One.simus. He had • right to
punish him even with death. but,
while Paul admits this great truth,
nevertheless he argues that Onesimut,
having be-en received by Jesut u a
co-laborer with Him, can no longer in
good conscience be considered as a
slave and as a criminal. Further, as
he had been spiritually adopted by
Paul, and as Philemon also owed his
spiritual life to th~ faithful teaching
of Paul, he was greatly indebted to
Paul and should, at Paul's request,
grant freedom to Onesi.mus. This
could ~ done simply by charging tM:
~nalty of the sins of Onesimus
against Paul's account with Philemon,
which was very rich, u it was founded
upon the value of the eternal life of
Philemon, which amounted to a tum
so vast that theu was not enough
money in the whole world to pay it.
IMPUTATION ILLUSTlATED
Jesus had said that a man's soul
was o f more value than all the: riches
of the world. Therefore. Paul had
a big balance in his favor in his ac-
count with Philemon. This lett~r was:
given by Paul to Onesimus to take
to Philemon and it was his passport
to enter into the hean of Philemon
whom he had so deq>ly offended. It
was also a command in love for
Philemon to charge his entire aceount
against Onesimus to the account of
Paul who ther~by imputed to O nesi-
nm s his own perfect credit with
Philemon, even as Christ imputed
His righteousness to all sinners who
will acknowledge Him as Saviour,
Lord, and the only begotten Son of
God, who was raised from the dead
for u.s (2 Cor. S:Zl), 0 ' I .M .;.
PAUL'S INSPIRED LnTn
But what 1 have written is merely
the way an ordinary man would
state the case and so we mu st look at
Paul's letter to learn how a truly
inspi red servant of Jesus Christ p~
sented the facts and arguments. He
begins by acknowledging that he is
a pri10ner of Jesus Ckrist, not a
mere prisoner of the Romans. His
associate is Timothy who joins in
his plea. He addresses Philemon as

that men will hide tehmselves in .
the dens and in the rocks of the
mountains. So desperate will be
those times that they will seek
death and not find it. The Bible
says, "For the great day of His
wrath is come: and who shall be
able to standl" Joel 2:10 refers to
this period. Although it has been
paritally fulfilled in times past, it
will have its completion at this fu·
rure hour.
Q. So~ll~Ura, C.tllf. "Did God ueate
evil? Why do Christians conform
lo lhis world? What is your opin-
ion of such conformity by individ·
uals who claim to love Godl"
A. The answer to the first question
is an unequivocable "no." Cod did
not create evil (Heb. 1 :13; Tit. 1 :2;
)as. 1:13). I John 1:5-"God Is
light, and in Him is no darkness at
all. As to conformity to this world
we must realize that while the lord
has given us a new nature the old

liever can dare say that he is with·

the uscmbly of uinta that met in
Phi1tmon'a home as "the church in
thy house," and extends to them the
apostolic blessing, "Grace to you,
and peace, from God our F•ther and
the T..ord Jesus Cbrist.''
APPROACH TlllOUGH LOVf
Then he rejoices over the faithful
character of Philemon. and thanks
God for him, because he has heard,
presumably through Onesimus and
others. of his love and faith toward
the "Lord Jesus, and toward all
saints." This is not mere Aattery,
because Paul has evidence that the
faith of Phikmon is so true and ef.
fec:tual that his actions have communi·
cated it by. example and teaching to
others who recognize: that he is re·
fteeting the good things in himself
caused by the presence in him of the
Spirit of Jesus Christ. Therefore,
Paul and his associates have great joy
and consolation in his love that is
evidenced in the hearts of the saints
who are refreshed by knowledge of
his faith and love, Beeause of these
things Paul wrote that, as an apostle
and the teacher of Philemon, he might
be so bold as to command him to takt
a definite course, "yet for love's sake
I rather beseech ~ ... for mv son
Onesimus, whom I have be:gott~n in
my bonds.''
THE PROMOTION OF ONESIMUS
Onesin .us wa!l. an unprofitable serv-
ant, but now, having been born into
the family of Christ and having ~
come a spiritual son of Paul, he is
"now profitable to thee and to me.''
This is a play on the word Onesimus.
which means "profitable," but because
of sin, he had not lived up to his
name. Paul needed help bKause. he is
now "Paul the aged" and in a Roman
prison, and he would like to have had
Philemon for an assistant, but he had
been using On~simus in Philemon's
stead, and possibly had a right to keep
him as a substitute for Philemon, but
Paul in sending him back and he
asked ..Philemon to rtttive. him ~ven
u he would have. received a ton of
Paul's ftesh in honor of hia father.
But Paul did not command this and
left it all to the wiUingn~s of Phi·
lemon. Furthermore, by running
away. Onesimus, in the providence of
God. became saved, which he had not
done while slaving for Philemon, so
perhaps it was God's plan that "he
departed for a season, that thou
shouldest receive him for ~ver" as a
brother in Christ and not temporarily
as a servant. God had promoted
One.sfmus. Surely old thmgs had
passed away and all things had be-
co~ new for him {2 Cor. S :17).
PAYMENT IN FULL
Furthermore, Paul had led Phile-
mon to Dlrist and ha"d afterward
ronsidered him a partner in the Lord's
work. Now he asks Philemon to do
the same to One.simus. If Onesimus
"hath wronged thet:, or oweth th~
ought, put that to mine account," and
whatever it is Paul will aettpt the
responsibility, and he considered his
own writing as a promissory note.
Then he added, ''Albeit I do not say
to th~ how thou owest unto me even
thine own ~If btsidet.'' So, if Phile-
mon ever tries to enforce pttyment,
Paul will not set up a cOunterclaim,
but will pay Onesimua' debt in full
without offsets.
