• NO COMMITMENT FOR PARK LAND
Why the sudden demand for drastic
Increase In the Newport Beach building
excise tax? Tile answer given last week
by · Mayor Don Mcinnis was that we need
the extra cash, and lots of It, In order
to buy those surplus freeway right-of-
way parcels for city parks. 1 know of no
such commitment. Tile Freeway Fighters
carried out their successful ·campaign
to kill the coast route for one purpose:
to prevent a senseless desecration of our
wonderful seaside community by the free-
way bulldozers, wnlcll would nave only
brought hundreds of thousands more cars
onto our congested streets. Tile voters
nave already made their sentiments known
on spending millions for more parks --
by turning down the last bond Issue
effort. Perhaps the voters, who are also
the taxpayers, nave seen the same sights
that Carl Artllofer caught with the camera
great expanses of city parks, with
no one using them. • • •
• SLOGAN FOR OUR TAX BILLS
County tax collector Bob Citron has
announced a contest for property tax-
payers to submit slogans to be used on
tax bill envelopes. My slogan Isn't goi ng
to win the $10 first prize, but It suggests
the only effective solution t o our painful
tax ailment: "Less government means
lower taxes."
• WHAT TO DO ABOUT JANE ?
Many patriotic Americans are fuming
at the antics of actress Jane Fonda,
who is giving aid and comfort to our
enemy, the North Vietnamese commun-
ists. Many Americans are saying In ex-
asperation that they wish there would
be something they could do about Jane .
There Is something: Don't go to see any
movies starring Jane Fonda, because
each of thos e admission tickets adds a
slight amount to the Fonda fund for
downgrading our armed forces and our
nation and for gl orifying the Vietcong .

• SEEKING THE CONSERVATIVE IMAGE
It'll be Nixon the conservative from
now until ele ction day In November.
President Nixon, a top expert ln the
great game of politics, IS again looi<tng
for the conservative vote wnlcn· helped
give him that razor thin victory for the
presidency 4 years ago. He Is going to
need It again this year.
After 3-1/2 years of devastating In-
nation, enormous budget deficits, wel-
fare debacles, rising tax burdens • • •
now waich for the new campaign straiegy
of firm stands on tbese critical Issues --
In an effort to recapture the Image of
historic Republican principles. And then
be prepared for the BWitch-back afisr
the election, when second-term President
Nllton wtll push with renewed vigor for
bl.e pet projects: tbe guaranteed annual

whom "all families of the eanh"
should br blessed (Gtn. 12:3). That
was about 4,<XX> years ago, and it is
still God'!i unchanging purpose.
LUCIFER'S lEIELLION
For about Z,(XX) years God dealt
directly with the chil dren of Abram ,
Isaac, and J acnh who were kn own at
first as "Hchrcws,'' then a.s "Israel·
ites," and fi nally as "Jews." Through
the prophets, whom J le speci fically
instructed, God gal·e H i ~ SJI('Cial veo·

He had put men on this eanh for
His own glory, to wo r.ship Him as
faithful scn ·ants and true witnesses,
and that mankind would Le eternally

pletely rebelled against llim and haJ

has come far short of the glory that
God had prepared for him (Rom.
3 :23 ), and, in consequence, is a help-
less, hopeless, lost ainner.

revelations and promiae. through the
prophets but He kept the promites
and raiHd up many other leadt:n in
addition to the three mat patriarchs
including MDKa, J01hua, Aaron, anc\
David. He sent anreJs to defend and
inatruct His people and made cove·
nanta with them binding upon Him·
self for their benefit. The record1 of
matters were all preserved for
them in writings upon acroll..a or roDs
or tablets by holy men inspire;d and
guided by God. This hope: and ex-
pectation was the basis of what wa.s
their· religion and is known to us as
Judaism.
THE KINSMAN·REDEEMER
Then, in accordance with the
prophecies and covenants and in
God's own time, the promised Kins·
man·Rcdeemcr was born in Bethle·
hem of Judea, of the virgin Mary,
was duly announced \.)y tht angeh
of God as the Saviour, Christ the
Lord (Luke 2:9-14), and by John
the Bapti!'ot as "the Lamb of God ,
which taketh away the sin of the
world" (John I :29), Thus the
prophecies were fulfilled, the cove·
nants were kt'pt by God, and he pro--
ceeded to make a new cove.na.1t
with His people and with all
Jews and Gentiles who wou ld accept
its terms. By thi.s new testament th~
blood of Jesus, the Christ, was !O
clean~ the sin of Adam and all
other personal sins away from the.
souls of all persons who faithfully
accepted the Lamb of God as their
sacrifice offered for tbc:m ( 1 John
Z :I, Z).
JESUS, MAN'S ONLY•MEOIATOl
AJI of this historical background
the writer of the Book of Hebrews
put in two majestic verses, "God,
who at sundry times and in divers
manners spake in time past unto the
fathers by the prophets, hath in these
last days spoken unto us by hi.s Son.
whom he hath appointed heir of all
things, by whom also he made the
worlds." This plainly states that to·
day we must look to Jesus, the
Christ, for all uf our instruction in
htavenly matters pertaining: to our
l..iW:s and work hut..

THE SUI'ttEMACY OF JESUS
The writer of the Book of He--
brews, who probably was Paul, under
the inspiration of the Holy Spirit
used the rest of this chapter to demon·
strate that there wu and is no posai·
hie substit•1te for Jesus as the Author
and Finisher of our faith (Heb.
12 :2). First. Jesns is the Son of Gqd,
then. He is the "heir of all things,"
thc>n. He i ~ the One "bv whom also he
made the worlds." FUrthermore, He
j .. "th~ brightnea!'-of his glory." "the
express image of his ~rson," and has
lhe power to uphold "all things by
tht· word."
Als .. lie purged our sins J-.y His
sacrifi cial death, ended all .sacrifices
nf animals, and, havin~ completely
fi ni.,hed every detail necessary for the
,.,,Jvation of sinful man. quietly "sat
tlow n on the right hand of the Ma·
je.:t y on high," where He still sits
a" Intercessor (Rom. 8 :26). Advocate
( 1 fohn 2:1). Guide (John 16 :13 ),
Coniforter (John 14 :16), Teacher
(iohn 14 :26). Helper (Heb. 13 o6),
s'upplier (Phil. 4 :19). and Energizer
(I Pet. 5 :10). He has completely
su~rseder! th~: prophets and priests,
:~nd is alone in His power today, for
He has <;aid." All power is given unto
me in heaven and in earth," and He
has not delt-gated it to anyone else.
HIGHER THAN ANGELS
But as some of the Hebrews might
think that the angels of God might
have su~rior powers. the statement
is made that He is "much better than
the angels" (who themselves were
superior to men ) because He olr
uined His title by inheritance {rom
God the Fafher, an-i God never said
to any angel, '.'Thou art my son, this
day have I ~~ottcn thee." Further·
more, wlxn jesus was born into this
world, all tht angels a<:knowledged
His supr!!macy and worshiped Him
(Luke 2o l3, 14 ). God had deer«<!
that the angels should be ''ministering
spirits, sent forth to minister for
them who shall be heirs of salvation.''
God also decreed concerning Jesus,
"Thy throne, 0 God, ia ror ever and
e\'er : a sc-eptre of righteousness ia
the .sceptre o£ thy kingdom."
THE IMPERISHABL£ SON
Further claim is made for Jeaus
that He has always "loved righteous·
ness, and hated iniquity," and conse·
qucntly God anointed Him with the
"oil of gladness'' above all with
whom He associates. Jeaus has the
joy of His Lord. Joy is for eternity,
while happiness is only for the im·
mediate present, hence the •· joy of
t~ Lord" can only bl! obtained
through Jesus, the Christ. The further
claim for superiority of Jesus is that
He is also God, who in the begin·
ning laid the foundations of the earth
as the abode of men (!sa. 45 :18), and
also the heavens arc the worka of
His hands. No angels, not even Luci~
fer when he was the "son of the
morning" (Isa. 14 :12) and "the
anointed cherub" (Etek 28 :141 , had
the power of CN:ation. But when
these acts of creation will perish,
Je.sus, the Son of God, the. Saviour
of men, will still remain. All <:reation
shall "wax old as doth a garment,"
but Jesus, the Son of God "art the
same, and thy yean shall not fail."
THE ETERNAL MESSIAH AND KING
As a final arcurntnt, this inspired
writer asks, "But to which of the
angels said he (God] at any time, Sit
on my right hand, until I make thine
enm~ies thy footstool ?" This is
God's attestation, quoted from Psalm
110 :1, that Jesus Himtelf is God and
entitled to the name of "Lord," that
His Messiahship is u eternal as the
exiatence of God the Father, and that
He had no predeceuor, and can have
no successor. Jt i1 a prophecy that
Satan and all of the enemies and de--
nieu of Jesut 11 ChriJt and Lord

Scripture : 1 Corinthians 9 :26-10:13
I"RO'!' "CHRISTIAN llfACOH," COl.LIHGSWODO, N.J .
There is a ministry of sufferiq that fa.Us to the
lot of every child of God. ''For unto you it ia fiven
in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe oo him,
but aho to sdffcr for his sall:e" (Phil. 1 :29). In
fact , the demon of worry and trouble aod all lc.indt
of trials and hardships seem to be tht common
heritage of humanity. But I want to say just here
that the believers' rdationahip to aU of these tria.IJ
and difficult and perplexing things is far different
from the .sinner's rHationship to them.
Let us consider that Old Testament character of
Job. I think we have here one who presents to ua
what should be the Christian's attitude toward the:
trials of misery, suffering, toss, and death, for
he experienced aJI of those thinc.o. [a spite of all
that Satan was permitted to bring upon him he
could a.ay. "Though he slay me, yet will I trust in
him" (13 :15). After all of these calamities came
upon him, and Mrs. Job turned upon him in her
perplexity and said, "Curse God, and die," still he
trusted implicitly in God and he looked forward to
that time when even in his body, a rtsurrected body,
he would look upon the face of his Saviour . He
had that attitude, and 1 believe that is the Christian
attitude in all or our sufferings. Job's wife, on the
·other hand, givea us the unbeliever's .attitude: toward
the5C same trials.
The Holy Spirit m-eals in the Scriptures at leut
a twofold nennity for Christians who are wa!Jcinc
in trialt and even cnterinc the: awful jaws of suf-
fering and JOtllCtimes death. The 6rst of these:
necusitiea bu to do with the antqonism that the
world holcil toward those who know the Lord and
desire to aerve Him with all their heart and mind
and stren(lh. The aecond of these neceuitiea hu to
do with the testing and the putfincs that the Lord
findt necessary to briag us into a richt relatiooship
before Him, and a1lo to l'how the world, the unbe-
lieving world on the ouuide, how a true: child of
God will act under streu and attain when ca1amitiea
and advenitie. come upon him.
Let us ~~ eome of tht trials of au~eri.,

It was not an ~:asy thing for him to follow Christ
btcausc he was permitting hi s posseJsions to come
between him and the Lord . So it is not pictured in
the Word of God as altogether easy to foUow
Christ.
Therl! is a vl!ry sharp antagonism betwun the
Christia n and the world. Jt will criticize: and per·
secute the gocl\y !o.'lint. It will seek for faults .1nrJ
faHu~s in his conduct. It is looking for them. II
the wor ld cannnt find flaws in your life, n will
falsely accuse the moti\·es of your good conduct and
uf your earnest spirit in the thing~ of God.
The world will misjudge Chri~t ians in their sep--
aration from the things of the world Just a!o
surely as you take a :otanJ un scpa rothon a nd
come out f rom amonl( them, the world ot u1,
.converted pe<,ple anrl the world of uug•)llly c\.;le
siuticism will take thf:ir stand against ;uu. The
worldly and the ungodly will condemn you, m y
Christian friend, if you do not run to the same tx·
cess of riot with them, but it will just as 1urdy con·
demn you ir you do ro along with them in their
worldly practices. If the world of unrighteousness
hated Christ, our Lord Je.sus, it will naturally hate
those that love Him and serve Rim.
If thoae of the world rose up and called ]nus
Christ Btehebub, they will not call the true fol·
Iowen of Jesus Christ by any fairer name than
that. "Wherein ye greatly rcjo1ce, though now for
a !Ieason, ... ye ate in hNviness thrQURh manifold
temptations [trials)" (I Pet. I :6). 11lat is the
word of the Apostle Peter. We are told that in thia
world we shall have tribulations. Dut thanks be
unto God in the ne:w jerusalem, in the Father's
hou~. that Christ has gone: to prepare, God's people
will never suffer. God will wipe away all tears from
their eyes. We are tokt that there .shall be no mor~
pain or sorrow, that the former thincs arc puled
away and that it is all clory and ble.!i!ling in the
!ight of God. for you are a child in His preacnc.e.
You know, "our 1iCht affliction, which is but for
a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and
eternal weight of glory" (2 Cor. 4 :17). What
then should be our attitude u we suffer many
affliction•? We should look not on the thincs that
arc ~n but at the thinp which arc not seen, for
the thing• which are aecn are those thing• of tuf.
fe ring. We should look at the thinga which are
1N.Jt K'm -the eternal glory. We 1hould remember
that "weeping may endure for a night, but joy
cometh in the mominc." Our aogui1h at but is
weak, so let us be w1Uinc to st~ outstde th~ camp
and bear His reproac:h whenever we Itt called upon
to do ao.
