HAAPA, owner and-publisher of the Ensign * WHO'S THE REAL BANDIDO? Ronald Caspers has been rightly casti- gated as shooting from the lip In his offlclal role as chairman of the county board of supervisors. He went quite out of his way to slander the Mexican-Ameri- cans of Orange County last week with the slurring tag of "bandldos." It may be that chairman Ronald Is seeking to curry favor with the voters In the manner of Archie Bunker. Archie's Insulting re- marks about minorities must be an In- spiration to Ronnie, our Lido bandldo. • • • * TV SHOW LEANS TO THE LEFT The Archie Bunker show, by the way, Is doing Its sly bit to ridicule the con- servatives, making them out to be nit- wilted crack-pots like Archie. The script writers, who must be laughing up their left sleeve all the while, give the good lines to that "meat-head" son-In-law, who comes through with well-timed argu- ments for abortion, gun control, atheism, and other left-wing causes. Conservatives should ask for equal time. .. • • • * NATIONAL SECURITY RATINGS The National Security Council has just published a revealing voting Index based on I 0 key national security votes. Here Is how our two California senators stand: Alan Cranston voted against national se- curity on all 10 Issues for a rating of ZERO! John Tunney voted against our nation's security 9 times out of 1 0 for a rating of 1 0! In the House, a 100 per cent rating for national security was recorded by our congressman, John G. Schmitz, the American Party candidate !or president. Our other congressman In Orange County, Dick Hanna, rated only 25 per cent. • • • * "SOAK THE RICH" IDIOCY George Farquhar, writing In the Hunt- Ington Beach News against George Mc- Govern's radical share the wealth prom- Ises, cited this example !rom the "Little Orphan Annie" cartoon strip to show the Idiocy of trying to soak the rich and redistribute the wealth: "Daddy War bucks, the International financier, Is accosted by a gunman In the park. The robber recognizes him and threatens to shoot him unless he redistributes his wealth. Daddy Warbucks agrees and replies: 'I have so many billion dollars and there are so many billion people In the world, So your share Is 60 cents.' He hands the mugger a dime and walks away.'' ONS!t>ERATTON hu al- ready been riven to th~ aotable miracle which Je- IUI performed in Cana of Galilee. This miraculoWi act of changing water into wine at a. marriage-feast is recorded in John 2:1-1 I. After "this beginning of his signs [ miradcs 1." Jews goes down to Capernaum, an 1mportant town located on the north- em shore o( th~ Sea of Galilee. In John 2 :12 we read these words. "After this he (Jesus] went down to Capemaum, he, an11 his mother, and his brethren, and his disci ples : and they continued there not many days." Reijarding this particular verse, the comment of two modern Biblical scflolar-1 should be noted : "Nazareth, nut Ca.na, would ap~r to bt: the place fmm which Jesu..c; 'went down' U rom the hill -country of Galil«: - camp. chap. 4 :47, 49, 51) to Caper- naum, for His brethren, who art: not s,,,id to han· bc:en with H ;Hl in Cma, are uow of the compo111y .... \Vt" ~nvc her~ thl' earliest appt·;Jrancc of this busr and thrivin~: Galile:1n town ·:: the histoq of our Lt:lrd·~ lifr. Moulton, n., Gospel A ccof'di"!J to )ohK, 1883, p. 46). Thus, verse 12 forms a tran· sition between John 2 :1-11 and 2 :13- 25. Therdore, after a brief stay at Capemaum, which later became the center of our Lord's ministry in Gali· ke, Jesus went southward to Juu- ~al~ in ord~:r tO bt: present aa: th~ Passover. . Th~ outline of the pre-sent l~s~n . which i!\ entitled "J~su~Rebuk~s Mer-c~r:lf)' Rc:Iigious Leaders," is as fol- lows : ' I. The Act of Jesus in cicansin~ the Tt-mple (John 2 :13-17) 2. The !ftncr:J} Results of Christ's .\1anifestation in Jerusalem (John 2 :23-25 ) THE ACT OF JESUS IN CLEANSING THE TEMPLE In John 2:13-17 we read the io!- lowing : "And the Jews' passover was at hand, and J c~u~ went up to Jeru- salem, and fou:ori in the temple those that sold oxett anti sheep "'-Od doves, anr:l the ch!!nK~:rs fJ { n1oney sitting: /\nrl when he had made a scourge (1 { small CIJrde;, he '!r. \'t the1 11 all nut of !lit" tcm ~lt:. and 1he sheep. and tht' o xen; and poured nut the chan;:o\_rs' money, :md overth rew the t;lJJr~; Anrl said \lllll" tlocm th:li ~ld dm·c;., Take these thin,O::"s hcn ~o.·: r.1akc n••t n:y Father ·~ hr.u,r Jn h•1u~e of mer- chandise. Other Passovers are speci fica lly mentioned in the Gospel of john, f0 r example, 6 :4 and 1 J :55. It should be noted that the unnamed feast o f John S :1 may have bt-en a P assover. Accord- ing to John 2 :13-25, the pruenc:e of J eaus at the Passonr (verse. 13, 23) was made memorable by the fint cl_cansing of the temple. On this sig- ntficant occasion Jcsw purified the temple by driving the tradert out of His Father's house. This partitular cleansing of the house of God is to be distinguiabed from the cleansing of the temple which took place dur- ing the lut week of the Lord•, earthly mini!'try (d. Matt. 21 ·12-16 ; Mark II :15-17 ; Luke 19 :45, 4G ). Thus, lint act of our Lord':. public mind- try in Jerusalem il a forecast of the put work of purifit:1tion which He 11 to accomplish. In thi• conneetion the wordt r«'CCrded in Malachi 3 :1·3 ahoald be noted. Such a mani- festation o( ritt"htcous anger prompts our Lord's disci-ples to ~call the words o f the Psalmist, "For the zeal o i thine houSe hath eaten me up" (cf. P~a . 69 :9 ). Hen it is worthy of note that Jesus Himself by cleanaing thc-temple publicly assumes the func::· tion of the Messiah. This act of purifyin~t the house of God was truly significant at the very beginning of Jesus' ministry in Jerusalem. THE PlOMISlD SIGN Verses 18-22 read as follows : "Tht-n answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign sbewest thou unto us, seeing that thou docst these things? Jetus answered and laid unto them, Destroy thi1 temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Then said the Jews, Forty and six /can was this temple in building, an wilt thou rear it up in three days? But he spakc of the temple of his body. When therefore he was risen from the dead, his d isciples remembered that he had said this unto them ; and they bc1i~ved the scripture. and the word which Jesus had said." At this point the Je:wish authorities asked fe r some visible proof of l.h is author- ity which Jesus exercised in rebuk- ing mt'rCenary religious leaders. It !ihOtlld be noted that Jesus' answer 10 the J ~:w ~ was one which they did not l!nderstand, namdy, that 5h0\11d ''this t:!n1ple'' ~ destroyed, He would raise it up again on the. third day. Furthe:nnore, this passage brings out the wonderful attribute of omniscience in the Lord Jesus. ln- stances of our Lord's !!upcmatural knowledge are to be noted in the F ourth Gospel, for example, John 1:12, 47, 48 ; 3 :3 ; 4 ,29 , 6:61, 64 ; il :4, IS; 13:11 ; 21 :17. However, let us not 10 to the extreme or ruling out all parallels. So we have '"holy Father," "thy holy child Jesus," and "Holy Spirit." All three are called "God" and "Lord." Thus, to speak of the Messiah u "The everlastina Father" or "Father of eternity" (as the traftllation may be) is not tl all out of order. Tho man moot r•poMiblo for Ita revival as a peace symbol Is Bertrand Russell, the British pbllo~lat, mathe- matician and p~Jiooopber. He proposed Its use to youthful dlearmament demon- strators at.Aidermaston In EQ~IaDII In 1958,; His purpose was to recllcaltae · British youth. For, you see, Russell Is a socialist who favors communism u the only Corm r1 government that holds out any hope for this world. He 18 also openly anti-Christian. In his book, "The .WII\ To Doubt," he wrote, "I am t dissenter from all religions, and I hope that every klod r1 religious belief will die." So It Is not at all surprlsiQI that Russell should have chosen a claaslcal anti-Christian design which Is a perversion d the cross d Christ aa hla peace symbol. The kind ol peace he Is proposiQI for modern man Is not peac,e with God In Christ :Which makes peace possible with one another through Cllrlot. He wants the world to unite on the basis of socialistic principles. In aayiQI what he does, Russell reveals himself as an agent and a tool ol Satan aDd an avowed enemy of Jesus. Russell's peace sYmbol has for many centuries been associated In classical symbolism with Satan ism, devil worship and black magic. This Is ~ r oadlly understandable because ol Emperor Nero's use r1 the broken cross to crucify Peter upside down. The Encyclopedia ·Britannica says r1 Nero that he Initiated "the later policy ol persecution (of Christians) and earned himself the reputation of Antichrist In the Christian tradition." It was his decision that the arms oC Peter's cross be ·broken and pointed downward. That cross then be- came a symbol to early Christians ot all that Is evil and that opposes Christ and His s aving GospeL 1ol!n Knox, the founder ot Scotch Presbyterianism also under- s tood this symbol In that way. A woodcut of Satan which he carved has been pre- s erved In a mus eum In Paris. It Is entitled "The Sign ol the Beast." It Is a hideous thing, and properly so. The eyes of the devllln Knox's 16th century woodcut are formed in the shape of Nero's cross. In the dark ages the Nero cross was adopted by Satanlsts who sought to make a mockery of the teachings ol1esus. More recently this same symbol was painted on the doors or Christian churches forced to close by the Bolsheviks in Russ ia, So it is not jus t an innocent, innocuous little symbol of sorts, fnd 1t is most definitely not a symbol ol peace in the Christian sense or In any other s ense. That many people today wear or display this symbol unwittingly we can well unders tand. But our enemies are not Ignorant or unwitting as to Its signifi- cance. Calling it a peace symbol is a typical example of their strategy ol caiiiQI black white, or of labeling a Marxist dictatorship a people's democracy. The next time you see someone displaying such a symbol, tell him that It is not a symbol of peace, but of death and destruction. Some wi II contend, of course, that the use ol this symbol in the pll8t as a s ymbol of evil does not prevent Its use today as a peace symbol. U millions of people today regard it as a peace symbol, then that Is what It Is, they will argue. That is not sensible, however. It is naive. By the same reasoning, if you could get millions of people to call an apple a tomato, lhen an apple would be a tomato. It Is and a !ways has been a symbol of death and destruction. The peoPJe of 1erusalem certainly did not see it as . a P.l'ace symbol when the leglo~ r1 Rome swarmed over thfllr walls. After,~~~~ cat~~~'~n<l <lestFIIC(UOI.\,I"~fF ,~Jtli~. and the inhabitants s lain or carried off as slaves, peace preval ed at the sin ·· that once wa s the Holy City -the peace ol the cemetery. 11. Over against this modern symbol of death, we d isplay the only legitl· mate symbol of peace, the cross of our Lord 1esus Chris t. By the grace ol God and as the people of God, we do know the things thai belong unto our peace. We know that before that infamous week was over which gave occasion to Jesus to speak thes e words of prophecy, the cross became a cruel instrument of death for 1esus. But He went to It willingly bearing the burden of our sins together with the s ins of all men of all time. Before He left that cross He suffered the penalty f or every man's sin. He put an end to the cause of strife between man and God , as well as to Satan's tyranny over man. The arms of His cross are nol broken; they are outstretched in a gesture that enguUs all men with the love and mercy of God. That cross meant death for Jesus, but it means \lfe for us. The cross is a peace symbol that truly gives peace to hearts once worried about sin a nd about s eparation from God. The cross c:l Jesus calls the world to repentance. It calls for a change of heart and mind. And It holds out the promise that "if any man be In Chris t, he is a new creature." Only that man who ts a new creature in Christ, renewed in heart and mind by His Spirit, can live at peace with his fellowman. This is the kind of peace-talk our world needs to hear today as never before so that men might begin again to hope. When the cross r1 Christ replaced the cross of Nero on the standards of the Roman empire two hundred fifty years after 1erusalem was destroyed, men went forth Into the world under the sign of the cross saying, "In hoc slgno vlncit,"-under this sign, conquer. The cross conquers men because it con- quers sin. It is the only power on earth which can effectively transplant the heart r1 God Into the heart or man and start him loving again with the love ol God. Friend, Jesus Is calling to you today. He wants to know 1.( you are ready and wi lUng to take up His cross and to follow In His train. 1erusalem wu destroyed because Its people turned from Him and rejected Him. If America 1o destroyed, II will be for the same reason. Renew your covenant then with Him today, and then - "Onward, Christian soldiers, marching (not staDIIIQI still or slttiQI Idly by) -Marching as to war. With the cross d 1es118, gol~ on before."
