* MURDER RULED LEGAL
Monday's headlines could have been
written more accurately In this manner:
"SUPREME COURT OKAYS MURDER."
The U. S, Supreme Court, taldng upon
itself the power of God, ruled that state
laws cannot Interfere with the decision
of a woman and her doctor to end a
pregnancy within the first 3 months.
The U. S. Supreme C curt is giving Its
approval to a crime that ranks as the
most monstrous In all of recorded his-
tory, the murder of unborn babies, The
total of the pitiful and defenseless vic-
tims will In time exceed the millions
who died In Nazi gas ovens during World
War II plus the many more millions
liquidated by the communist terror In red
Russia and red China.
The killing of unborn babies Is murder,
even though the abortionists seek to jus-
tify the crime by saying that the unborn
in! ant is not a human being I They know
that a life Is being terminated when
abortion Is committed any time after
the momept of conception.
God's law still stands unchanged, and
vengeance Is the Lord's. What a fearful
judgment Is awaiting the abortionist on
the final day of reckoning! • • •
• WILL NIXON HISTORY REPEAT?
It appeared to be Nixon the conserva-
tive again when the president spoke last
Saturday after taking the oath of office
for his second term. He asked the nation
to substitute self reliance for govern-
mental paternalism, and he was loudly
applauded when he said that "America
was built not by government, but by
people; not by welfare, but by work;
not by shirking responsibility, but by
seeking responsibility,"
President Nixon also edited a famous
phrase from President John KelUledy's
inaugural address, saying, "Let each
of us ask --not just what will the
government do tor me, but what can I do
for myself."
These are reassuring statements, and
President Nixon could regain stature In
the eyes of conservatives by keeping
these promises. But there Is the per·
slstent and disturbing echo of earlier
Nixon assertions . that he would
never take the nation down the dictator-
Ial road of wage and price controls ...
that deficit government spending must
be ellmlnated because It Is the cause
of ln!latlon . . • that we must never
trade with the enemy that Is providing
the war materiel that Is killing our boys
In VIetnam . • I that he was going to
clean out the State Department of the
ultra-liberals who have engineered our
disastrous foreign pollcy •. I
All these promises have been reversed.
What can we expect from hl8 re·lnaugural
promises?

M an's flight through
tained by the power
knowledge."
Those words on the famous "Eagle
statue" at the United States Air
Force Academy fairly jumped at ue
as we walked toward the mess hall.
We were three astronauts in train-
ing for the Apollo 15 flight, and we
were in Colorado Springs to brief
the Air Force cadets on what we
would be attempting to do on our
forthcoming moon shot, slated for
July 26, 1971.
David Scott, Alfred Worden and
decided right then that we wanted
those words somehow to be a
of Apollo 15. But not ti;~,;:/;~~:;~~ later did I realize how s:
they were.
Years of preparation are required
to fit a man to go into space. As a
graduate of the Air Force Test Pilot
School at Edwards Air Force Base,
assigned to teat the world's highest
and fastest flying airplane, I felt as
if I had reached the pinnacle of my
training when I applied to the Space
Admini ~trati on as a candidate for
the astronaut program. That was in
1963 . I wa~ turned rl own. probably
because of an accident that had OC·
curred two years earlier. My student
pilot and I had crashed in the des-
ert in a light airplane. I s uffered
two broken legs, a broken jaw. a con.
CU!\Sion and many cuts and bruises.
In 1964 I applied again. and was
again turned down. Then in 1966
I tried once more, but without too
much hope. as I was approaching
the age limit for the program. This
time I was successful, and moved my
small family to Houston, Texas,
where we were to spend the next
five years.
• Tbe pftlpara.tton of an astronaut
really falls into three disti nct areas
-body, mind and spirit. Our bodies
were given superb conditioning. Our
mindR were honed-in addition to
flight knowledge we were instructed
in orbital mechanic~. geology, as.
tronomy, spacecraft design, systems
operation. even management and
organization. I served as a ground
test crewman for Apollo 9, then as a
support crewman for Apollo 10, a
backup crewman for Apollo 12, and
finally my big opportunity came as
a prime crewman on Apollo 15.
But what about spiritual prepara-
tion? That began for me with Chris.
tia n parents who loved me and
guided me until I was ready to make
my own commitment to Jesus Christ.
One day my mother and my brother
and I hRppened to walk past a little
Baptist church in New Port Richey,
F'lnrida. where we lived, and saw a
si~n ,,uhirle a nnouncing REVIVAL.
The year was 1941. It's still a mys-
tery to me as to why we stopped,
fo r we were attending another
church at the time. At the end of
the ~e rv ice when the invitation was
given. someth ing just touched my
hea rt a nd caused me to step forward
antJ gi,·e my life to Jesus Christ. It
wa!'\ ~o stransre because I had never
before heard the word "invitation."
But it ce mented a relationship which
I ha \'C needed every day of my life
since.
Thirty years later I was back in
F'lnrida at f<~pe Kennedy, lying on
my lmck in t he command module
E nrlea r o 11T. awaiting the countdown
a nd t he moment of ignition for the
liftoff of Apollo 15 . As our crew of
three la.r there in the spacecraft we
wondered what was in store for our
Ji,·es. l always say astronaut& are

I felt a little anxiety, a little con.
cern. a little ariticipation, an air of
expectancy. You can't help reflecting
on your life, wondering whether you
made the right decision, as you sit
there atop all that hardware put to-
gether by the lowest bidder!
But before you know it you hear
the word ''Ignition! .. and you eense,
and then feel, and then hear, all that
tremendous p0wu beina releued
and lfftlng you free of the earth.
There is a moment of supreme ela-

more beautiful spot-the high Apen-'
nine Mountains on three sides of us, t/(
and the deep canyon of Hadley Rille
to the west.
Later it came time to light the
third stage and begin leaving our
orbit around the earth. Now I could
look out my side window and see the
blue Pacific. I saw all of the Hawai.
ian Islands framed in that window,
even the volcanic peaks of Mauna
Loa and Mauna Kea where we had
taken our geology training. As We
entered the third stage it seemed as
if we were going straight up; for
now we were starting to move away
from the earth out into space.
Imagine the excitement of riding linN
that lunar dune buggy, Rover. I, IJI"L£ bouncmg through space, rnakmg 611'
The next time I looked out a win-
dow I could see the southeastern part
of the United States, including the
cape from which we had launched .
The whole peninsula of F lorida
seemed only a few inches long. We
could see Cuba. t he Bahama Islands
and those beautiful blue.green wa.
ters off the Florida coast. Then we
became busy in the spacecraft and it
was several hours before we had op-
portunity to maneuver and look out
again. This time we were startled to
discover that we had moved so far.
so fast. Now we could take in the
whole sphere of the earth. We could
see continents; we could see colors
-the tans of the Sahara Desert, the
blues of the Atlantic and Mediter-
ranean , and then the white of the
few clouds over the earth that day.
As we viewed the earth from that
perspective we were reminded of a
very fragile and yet a very beautiful
Christmas tree ornament hanging in
the blackness of space.
Three dan went very fast, and
before we knew it. it was time to go
into orbit around the moon. Here
was a different type of beauty, an
awesome starkne~s. with wide ba·
sins, high mountains, canyons, and
craters of every size and description.
The surface of the moon was a
dark, gun.metal gray; then its color
changed in relation to the sun's an.
gle, and it became a brown, a light
tan. and finally turned almost white.
observations and looking for rocks
where man had never been before!
But what really touched my soul
was the fact that I cou ld feel God's
presence so strongly, and in so many
different ways. We had some new
and difficult tasks to perform, things
Wa nevn ~dered during all thOR
years of training. But when the sit.
uations came up 1 just gave a quick
silent prayer to God and immediately
the answer was there. And I realized
the truth of those words on the
Eagle statue: "Man's flight through
life is sustained by the power of his
knoWledge." His knowledge of what?
His knowledge of Jesus Christ. That
is the sustaining power! All around
the globe we meet people today who
say to us, "I prayed for you." And
I know what they mean.
I felt God's presence on the moon
more than I have ever felt it here
on earth: and 1 came back from the
Apollo 15 flight to find it had changed
my life. Before, I was a nut&-and·
bolts type, a technician, one who
was too busy with details to be
really concerned over the needs and
feelings of other men and women
on the earth. Now I have a new per-
ception and a new appreciation for
this spaceship we call earth. It has
been a real spiritual awakening. I
think I am a person who loves all
men, and God has given me a strong
desire and compulsion to share my
faith with them.
The meS88ge I have, of course, is
the old, old story of Jesus Christ.
Our crew brought back the Genesis
rock from the moon, but I came

"WHY CHRIST CAME"
Have you ~vPr asked yourself
why the Lord Jesus Christ came
rnto the world~ Have you ever
"Marcl'led tl'le Scrioturl!'t.." to. fond
out why?
The ma)Onty of rel +gtous lead ·
ers and thetr followers seem to
lhonk that Chnst hved on earth
to teach us by Hts words and His
example how we should hve.
But let's th.nk fhts through
Our lord d+d in deed show how
men should hve with .. ch other
and before God. But wl\lt were
the results? Old the people say:
"How wonderful! Now we know
how to live tOðer and antoy
ttfe! Let's follow His teach iniS
and the world wtll be 1 happier
place to love tn!'" Is th•s what
they u +d? Far from +1. As the re ·
cord states, they hated Htm, they
ndiculed H•m. they heckled Him
end t+nally they na•l£d Htm to 1
cross. As to Hts eumple: Have you
ever seen how a Jeweler Wtll put
1 di•mond on 1 poece of black
felt to show it to 1 prospective
customer? The diamond +S seen
mos1 clear1y tn all tiS brtlfiance
aga ln &t the dark. black back·
&round-and vtce versa. In the
same way , man has never really
followed Christ's example-he
couldn 't. Rather, the pure wh+te tight of Hts holmess only shows
up the dark. bl1ck character of
th3 hum1n heart. and man by
contrast stands rebuked 1nd con·
demned.
But why, then, did Chri"t come
onto the world? The whole voluma
ot Scripture bears witness to St.
Paul's answer In I Tim . 1:15:
"Christ Jesus camto into the world
fo save sinners."
Con!lider the Old Testament
types and prophesies. Consider
•Is Psalms and poems. Consider
the words of Chr~st Htmsett and
you will see that He came, not
to IN., promarily, but to dl&-to
die "for our sins" (I Cor. 15:3),
to pay our penalty that we miaht
be justified-clearlld of all the
cheraes wh ich the lew h•ld
•aainst us.

we may ltust in the ,.J-ded 8ft-
