A POOR LOSER
AND A BADMOU.TH
This is in reply to an editorial attack on me in the March
23 edition of the Costa Mesa Daily Pilot, in which I was
accused of being "out in left field."
If you had followed the advice of the Daily Pilot during the
past few years, here's what you would now have:
* A freeway
created chaos.
• Millions of
reation bonds.
that would have split your town in half and
dollars of indebtedness for park and rec-
• A civic center costing about $50 million. (We know the
estimate was $23 million, but have you seen how prices have
gone up since that estimate, due to wild government spending?)
*Two
the past.
city councilmen who hadn't done a very good job in
This is only a sampling of what Newport Beach would now
have if we had listened to the Daily Pilot. Time and money
won't permit me to go much further, but if you want to go
back about 20 years, when I was connected in many ways with
former Newport Harbor News-Press Publisher Ben Reddick,
you will better understand why --just as Sam Yorty has the
Los Angeles Times to attack him --I have the L. A. Times'
satellite, the Costa Mesa Pilot, to attack me. These publish-
ers have been at this kind of thing for years. How they got
by the anti-trust laws when the Times bought the Pilot, I'll
never know.
Starting
by one.
next week, I'll answer the City Councilmen, one
Meanwhile, if you want to chat about these things, stop by,
and I'll sell you some nuts and bolts and screws and a dust-
pan. Maybe you'd like a new broom to help sweep things
clean in this town.
Left field is a wonderful position. There's plenty of room
out here, and we'd like to have more people play the position
with us. AL FORGIT
