HEEDS OUR PROTEST The Newport Beach Clty CouncU lwl 'lt'tHlY decided to back ol! from the con- trO'I'erstal program of down-zontng resi- tSenttal property 1n the older areas of our city, Thill decillion by our city councUmen shows that they do lillten to protesill. It alllo demonstrates the need for voicing protests when necessary --and the need for a locally owned newspaper like the Ensign, an aroused group of citlzellll like the Common Senile Coalition, and an energetic gadfly like AI Forgit to keep an eye on what's going on 1n City Hall. This Is no time to relax our watchdog duties, Just as with the freeway fight, eternal vigilance Is still the order or the day. The watchdog must still remain on guard in defense of property rights, • • • The following was written before the City Council's welcome decision on down- zoning, but It Is still pertinent testimony that we have plenty of controls already. • • • A stranger newly arrived in town and listening to the planners' arguments f or more building controls would be led to believe that Newport Beach has prac- tically no building guides or regulations. On the contrary, we have very specific and stringent restrictions written Into our city code --controlling buildable area, height, setbacks, building material, elec- trical wiring, plumbing, garages, living area, windows, doors, etc., etc. We are Indeed very thoroughly "building coded." We abide by the laws of the land and by the laws or our community, We ask no extra .favors, just the enjoyment of our property rights, which we have held lor many years, and under which our community has developed into one of the finest in the nation, • • • OOMMi.lil:~~Q)! (2) It clearlv mcam that righteousness which God wil l rrgard and reckon as such in men. But { 3 ) it cannot mean any righteousness of character divinely impWnttd or wrought in men. The whule argument of the Epistle, espe- ciall y in chapters 3 and 4, is totally in· \·onsistent with this view of the phrase., and makes it quite clear that what is here. meant l>}· 'the righteousness of God : is 'a ri~hte11usness not owr OWK, but a righteousness r'tcftvtd by faith, and rtckontd to MS, in vi rtue: of the wnrk o r Christ.' Here, (I) since sinl~ ness, in the most ab.solute sense that can be ascribed to a creature-nature, is ascribed to Christ. to be 'made sin' cannot mean that He was made pet· sonaUy sinful, either in act or inclina- tion Nor should it be rendered 'made a sin·offerifl~ ;' but just a.!l 'tnad• 11 cur'st f o' w.s,' in Galati am 3 :13, means that Christ was 'held and treated as the accursed one' in our stead, 50 'made sin for us, who knew no sin' can only mean that the Sinless O ne was 'held and tr~ted as thf' Sinful One' in our stead. Gt~~Jt Books II: lnrltatioos REFLECTIONS FROM F THE BACK ROW If you sat in the back of the City Council chambers Monday night and watched and listened, you would have realized that the people can, indeed, fight City Hall. For months, we had been told that our property would be down-zoned, that Newport was getting too many people and the planners had to put a stop to that kind of thing. Then, the people started talking back. The Common Sense Coalition was formed and grew --and it's still growing. The real estate industry spoke its piece. The Chamber of Com- merce finally got its finger in the pie. But mostly, it was the people. People who had owned R-2 lots for years, hoping to someday build that second income unit. People who felt that their property rights were important enough to fight for. People who just got plain mad about being pushed around by planners. Together, we fought City Hall. Monday night, you could see the results, as one city councilman after another spoke out against down-zoning. A few months ago, only one council- man, Dick Croul, was fighting down-zoning. Monday night, only one was in FAVOR of down-zoning, and that was Paul Ryckoff. Finally, our want to control city fathers got the message. The people their own lives and their own property. Next January, when it's time to nominate 4 City Council candidates to oppose the incumbents, let's put in 4 men who respond right away when the people speak, instead of waiting, as our present Council has, for so long before seeing what the people want on civic centers, freeways, park bonds and down-zoning. • • • • Down at . the store, we've got a good supply of deodorants and flushing materials. Might be a good idea for the citizenry to use a good supply of this stuff. Stop by and let's talk about it. ·'t--AL FORGIT THI SOUTMLANo-1 ,U •• ST • HAJ:OWAitl • COLONY PAINTieiMALL APPLIAMCIS ei'LUtiiiMO SUPPLIII IT AR . 2201 W.IALIOA ILVD., fiiWPOU IIACH
