• ECOLOGY INV!TING DIBABTER
TbJa IJI gettlJlC to be a crazy, mbted-
IIP world • • • mOBtly because at the
crowtDg ecology-manta . • • Care are
required to have anti-pollution devices,
cutting down the mUeage to about 10
per gallon, doubltng gas consumption --
and on all sides we bear about the di·
minlflbing gas supply, and possible ra-
tioning --and the ackled gas consump-
tion may be producing more pollutants
than plagued us before the so-called
"clean-air" devices . • Construction
at new power plants Is being held up --
in spite at the repeated warnings at
power shortage and threat of "brown-
out" when power supply starts falling
• . . Construction ot the proposed pipe
line In Alaska has been halted, again
In the name ot ecology --and again
in the face ot threatened fuel shortage
• • • Here In Newport Beach there has
been an attempt by the city planners
and Council to put controls on new con-
struction, no doubt to halt "people pol-
lution" ot our city --yet at the same
time there are also the efforts to open
more waterfront area (such as Marina-
park) and to obtain view parks (such
as Cliff Drive park), which would attract
additional swarms ot outsiders to crowd
our streets and lltte r our town . . .
Here on the CalUornla coast, the Re-
gional Conservation Commission also
wants greater multitudes to Invade our
beaches, even In crowded Newport Beach
--yet seeks to restrict local residents
and property owners from the enjoyment
at their property rights, taking from
them their right to the legal use of
their property, with no compensation for
this loss •.• How long will this ecology-
mania continue In the face of approaching
crises of shortages and rationing and
destruction of property rights? Perhaps tlt'ef<f crises must reach disaster pro-
portions before th<r eco-m~la subsides.
Let us hope it -wtll not be tOll late. • • • * BY WHATEVER NAME ...
Newport Beach planners are backing
away from their down-zoning efforts,
undoubtediy recognizing the energetic pro-
tests from local citizens and property
owners. But In Corona del Mar, at last
week's meeting of the reactivated Civic
A..sn., there ag:<ln was more talk of
asking for controls on residential build-
ing. The argument was preservation of the
Corona del Mar "village Image" and
prevention of large size duplexes. By
whatever name it Is called, It Is still
down-zoning, and denial of property
r1ghts without compensation.

llvlfi(J m Nssllvme. Tennessee. Slle IS mamed
to a mmister of the Free w,/1 Baptist Church
l wu playing shortstop for the San
Francisco Giants, a job I had
earned in 1969 after hitting .312
with 19 homers and 44 RBI's in the
minor leaguee. We were up against
the New York Yankees in the 1962
World Series. Both teams were fight-
ing for their livee. In this particular
game the Yankee second baseman,
Bobby Richardson, slammed a dou~
ble, and landed on second base. I was
playing back, close to second, when
I heard Bobby call, "Jose!"
What could a Yankee player want
with me in the middle of a heated
World Series game? I knew that
Bobby was a Christian, but I could
think of no reuon why he would call
my name except to confuse me.
"Hey. Jose!" Bobby called again.
"I want to know -do you know
the Lord?"
"Yes," I said, nodding and smil-
ing at my Christian brother and
baseball opponent. I had accepted
Christ as my Savior only a short
while before the World Series.
Although I tried to concentrate
on the rest of the ball game, I kept
seeing Bobby Richardson's face and
hearing his voice. There he was, a
great player, in the middle of base-
ball's most exciting contest, asking
me i f I knew the Lord!
Our team lost the Series, but I
gained something of lasting value
playing close to second base that day.
Bobby's les~on in witnes!'ing ha~
~tayed with me through all the ups
and down!-~, wins and losse.o;~, of my
career . I've learned that I am never
t.oo busy to talk to someone about
hi ~ soul. even in the heat of the bat-
tle. wh1ch for me i~ a ba!-leball game.
I was born in Barceloneta, Puerto
Rico. As a boy I went to church as a
ritual, but my life lacked peace and
contentment. Growing up on that
beautiful island, I never dreamed I
would one day have so many oppor-
tunities to witness around the world.
Except for real peace in my heart,
I wanted nothing more in life than
to play baseball. Puerto Ricans are
famou.'\ for their love of the game,
and our island has contributed many
ball players to the American major
leagues, including the IP.te Roberto
Clemente.
My father, however, did not want
me to play ball. "Go to college," he
said.
"But I don't want to go to school.
I just want to play ball," I protested.
When I graduated from high
school I had scholarships to any uni-
versity in Puerto Rico. Again my
father told me. "Jose, go to school."
I made a bargain with him. "Let
me play ball for just one year," I
uid. "If I do not make good, I will
quit and go to school."
That one year stretched into 19
year~! I'm still playing. !'ow I tt:ll
my two sons, Jose and Ramond.
"Boys, I want you to go to school.'"
And J don't know what will happen
because both of the young teens like
to play ball too.
La.'lt year I thought I would retire
from prOfessional baseball. Retire-
ment would mean more time to work
for the Lord. For the last several
years I have played 270 games with~
out a vacation, alternating between
my team in the States and a club in
Puerto Rico.
Retirement would also give me
more time with Delia, my wife, and
our OOys. The boys are growing up;
they need a father more than ever.
I wu seriously thinking of leaving
pro ball when I headed for the win-
ter season in Puerto Rico late l88t
year. "Just think of all the oppor~
tunities J would have to witnesa if I
weren't tied down to a. rigorous
baseball schedule!"-so I thought.
Then I remembered Bobby Richard~
son. "JOI!Ie," I said to myself, "if you
are going to be a Christian witness,
retiring your uniform won't make
any difference. N010 -the golden
today -ie the time to witness, not
the tomorrow that may never come."
So Instead of retiring to my ic-e

is in charge of our lives? Let's see
what we can find in the Bible to help
you. Right now!"
I knew then that changing ball
clubs and locations would not hinder
my witness for Christ. It was just
as Bobby Richardson had shown me:
I could be an effective witness where-
ever I went.
I know that I will get tired of
traveling. I am only a couple of
years away from being 40. I'd rather
sleep in the same bed every night
instead of in a different bed in a
different hotel through the whole
baseball ~eason. And I'll be lonely
many times, wishing I were at home
in Caguas or in our Philadelphia
apartment with Delia and our sons.
I'll wonder why f didn't trade my
uniform for a job with regular hours.
That's when the Lord will speak
to me, just as he has done so often
since 1962. "Jose," the Lord will
say, "you consulted me about your
life. You knew that I wanted you to
stay in the game. You are where I
want you right now. What are you
going to do about it?"
Then I will get busy finding some-
one to ask, "Do you know the Lord?"
I won't have to look far. It might be
a kid asking for my autograph. Or
a team member who is discouraged,
wondering if anybody cares about
him. Maybe it will be the person
sitting on the stool next to me in
the hotel coffee shop. Everywhere I
turn I find someone waiting to be
asked that question.
In 1971 I played in my second
World Series. This time my team
won. The Pirates trounced the Balti~
more Orioles, and the greatest thrill
of that Series was when I hit a
double, scoring Willie Stargell. It
proved to be the winning run of the
Series. I also set a new record that
Series for the most assists made by
a third baseman in a World Series.
Time has diminished that thrill.
Like the 1962 World Series, most of
what happened is already forgotten.
Only the thrill I received when I
gave my life to the Lord has never
dimmed. Neither has the joy I ex-
perience each time I ask a person,
"Do you know the Lord?"
You will find me wearing a Phil-
lies uniform this season, but whether
l play ball for the Giants, the Pirates
or the Phillies, I am the Lord's. I

False prophets teach that no deep law work in
the heart -is necessary, the sinner doet not ~ to
bemoan his wretchodlless ant.! misery. In many
cases they despise the law of God and ahov~ it
aside. Th~y may in some cues preach free grace.
But, dear fri~nds, we nrtd to realize that wh~n free
grace is divorced from legal requiremnts it ceases
(o he grace. It can easily be pC-rvetted to lawless-
ness. Lawlessness is the essence of sin, and all
who do not se~ the necessity of the law arc in deep
danger. There is a gnat deal of preaching of "just
accept Qrist and be .!aVed," a.s though no convic-
tion or crying sense of ~ should accompany this.
Prof~ssors are encouraged to come forward at
meetings or to raise the hand, as though such an in-
dication finished the transaction and that was all

than any mer~ outward indic::ation needed for the
salvation of Goc..l. Then must be a complete change:
of heart, a conversion from the pow« of Satan
and sin to the living Lord, followed by a lif~ that
honors Him and follows all His righteous demands.

NEWPORT
HYPOCRITES UNITED
Hey, are we hypocrites or something?
We voted in Proposition 20, inviting all of the inland
folks down so we can show them a good time at the beach.
We're thinking about building a tram to haul them from
a parking lot to the water's edge. We discuss turning the
Balboa Bay Club and Marinapark sites back to the inland
beachgoers. We map out a public bike trail system along
the beach. All of this sounds like we really meant it when
we voted for Proposition 20.
But, there are some curious head-scratching questions
remaining. For instance, what do we do with these people
when we get them all down here? Where do they change
clothes? Where do they go to the restroom? Are there people
along that beautiful stretch of sand between Newport Pier
and the Santa Ana River who just won't believe Proposition
20 is a reality? Do they say "yes" out of one side of their
mouths, and "no" out of the other side? Do they really
favor public beaches, restrooms, bike trails and so forth?
Sure. As long as it's in front of SOMEBODY ELSE'S house.
They seem to say, "Hooray for the public ---but keep the
public away from MY beach.''
Now, if these folks are really serious about public beaches,
transportation and facilities, they're missing a good bet.
We've got a great guy right here in town, on the public
payroll, who designed the county's arterial road system
(which has stood up very well) and the great Dana Point
Harbor, which has tremendous public facilities. Ken Samp-
son is the man. He's director of our county parks, beaches
and recreation department. If these pro-Proposition 20 folks
are serious, they should turn to Ken for help. Newport
could be his third masterpiece.
Personally, I voted against
against inviting more people.
