The North Vietnamese frequently
gave us trouble about our singing.
If it was loud they would stop us,
and then we would do it softly. One
~unday they ordered us to atop sing-
Ing and we refused, so the guards
came in and pulled some of us out,
and for weeks afterward they would
permit no church services.
You have to understand that not
all the men in that prison were re-
ligious, though they all tended to
call on God in time of need. But we
realized that our captor.111 were try-
ing to divide us and create dissen-
sion. In my ease they would play
up to me because of my race, and
try to get me to 11ide with their
cause. That kind of tactic made all
of us Americans .111tick ciMe)y to-
gether, no matter what our beliefs.
Toward the Jut. u the bombing
I"H:W intenae, we aefUied what wu
happening, and we held quiet ser-
vices of thanksgivinl'. We had rea-
son to believe, from considerable ex-
perience, that theee people who held
us would compromise only under
preuure.
My spiritual hiBtory began in the
Loch C!"eek African Methodist Epi&:
copal Z1on Church of Fayetteville
North Carolina. An uncle and aunt:
Levi and Mittie McLaurin, were re-
spon.lllible for seeing to it that I wu
in Sunday School regularly. When
I was 12 years old a revival service
wu held in the church, and I along
with other UI18aved pertM>ns re-
sponded to the appeal. We came to
the mourner'B bench and knelt, and
I felt the rebirth. I was delivered.
The weight of sin was Jilted from
my shoulders, I knew the presence
of God in my life, and I rejoiced
and praised hiB name. That pres-
ence hu never left.

ONE TERM ENOUGH
FOR POLITICIANS
Watergate is proving all over again that we should restrict
politicians to just one term. If we put that restriction on
everybody --from city councilman to president --it would
stop a great deal of high campaign spending.
Besides that, it would cut down on the tremendous expense
of paying pensions to politicians, and it would keep them
from doubling their salaries over and over again,
It would also brl.ng forth some people who are REALLY
civic-minded and willl.ng to SERVE in government. What we
have now are a lot of ''hot shots" who believe that being on
committees or chambers of commerce and getting their
names in the paper makes them civic-minded citizens. Too
often, these people are more interested in interfering with
the public than in serving. Look at the coastline commission
set up by Proposition 20, for example.
Some of these appointed people have a lot more power than
our elected officials. Look at your local Planning Commission.
These guys are just appointees, but they have tremendous
power over your private property. I say let's ELECT the
PlaMing Commission. We could cut out the salary paid to
the City Council, because the Planning Commission, which
serves without pay, works harder than the Council, anyway.
We could make the planners more responsive to the people
by electing them directly.
Think about it. Lower campaign costs, elimination oi costly
pensions and attracting people who are really civic-minded,
All of this could be accomplished by the one-term restriction.
