* A TRIBUTE TO BILL MASON
I count It a privilege to have known
Bill Mason as a friend during these past
years of tremendous growth and ecolog-
ical upheaval here in our Harbor Area.
Patient good humor best describes his
day-to-day attitude as he carried on his
trying and exacting duties as president
of the Irvine Company. It had been an
increasingly demanding mission, at times
frustrating, particularly as the ecology-
mania continued to raise its shrill voice.
The Irvine Company, with its thousands
of acres of open land, became a natural
target of those who are c laiming with
increasing clamor that private owner-
ship of property, including land, should
not stand in the way of the demands of
the public.
I would not have blamed Bill Mason
if he had run out of that patient good
humor and had said "plague upon the
ecologists" and had proceeded to develop
the ranch lands according to the Irvine
Company's rights under law. However,

Many already realize, and many more
will come to appreciate that fact that
Irvine Company ownership of the im-
mense acreage land-locking our commun-

orderly development under expert private

public spirited policy. In his death we
all have lost a good friend of the Harbor

I remember one day in Akron
Ohio, a year &I'Q. I had juat entered
the ftnala of the FlrHtone Tourn.
ment of Championa, and the televi.
sion cameru were zoomin8' in on me.
Chrta Schenkel of ABC wu doinl'
the interviewinl'.
"I understand, Mike," he aaid
"that you have made the televieio~
ftnals in the tournament for three
out of the Iut aix yean."
"Yes," I said, "and thi• time may.
be by the Grace of God I can win."
Chria reacted by aaying, "Oh."
Then he paWJed a long time before
he repeated the word, "God." And
he added, "I understand you are a
friend of Billy Graham's."
I told him, "I don't know Mr. Gra.
ham pef'80naJJy,• but I do know the
Lord Jet~ua Christ. I believe in him
and love him."
Well, it bad all been .so une:s.:-
pected. When Chrfa brought up the
t~ubject I thought, "Chris; this ian't
the place." But then I knew I had
to be honest, and the Lord gave
strength. I felt my back straighten
as the answer came out. And what
a re.~ponM! Scores of people wrote
lettenr. commenting on my witneM,
and inviting me to speak to ditrerent
groupe about the Lord. People know
now where my stand i11.
Bowling haa alway" come nat-
uraJiy to me. I've been on the lane~~
11ince I wu 14 yean old; my folks
owned a bowling alley in Burbank
California. They sent me to Em~
-:nanuel Ev~ngelleal Free Church,
Just ten mmutes from my home.
About the age of thirteen I went to
my Sunday School teacher and said
that I wanted to accept Chri11t as
my friends had done. I made a pro-
fession of faith, but wasn't really
aware of what W&!'l involved. It
never soaked through to me, you aee.
that 1 had a !'lin nature that sepa-
rated me from God. It wun't that
they didn't teach me-I wu 11imply
unreg-enerate.
My teacher WM aiM my high
,'lchool history teacher and buket-
ball coach. He wu a born-again be-
liever, and he told me about the
Lord. But I ju11t drifted away. It
wa." a long drift-from the time
I wa.~ 18 yean~ of age until I was
29. Not once did I come back; not
once in that time was I aware of the
meaning of ~lvation.
All during thi" time I was bowl.

State. After three year11 of college
r married Debbie, a Colo rado girl.
and we moved back to California
where I worked at odd jobA. When
I reached 25 1 decided to go on the

To join the PBA one needK to

of recommendation from three rep.

We Man found that the Htrain
wu almoMt unbearable. Emotionally
we were not prepared to handle the
preMure~~~-not just from the bowl-
ing, but from the life-tttyle of tour-
inJC. The reMult wa.M that it affected
our marriasce r elation.,hip, We were
Rim ply not mature enough.
Four yearM asro I wa14 in New
York f'ity, rooming with NelMn
Burton, Jr., when a man named
John f:oder came into our room. I
knew John. A"' a bowler he wun't
much of a threat, and u a man,
m08t of the KUYI! conl!idered him to
be 110me kind of religioue nut. But
here he was with hi11 Bible.
At that time my viewA about God
a_nd Chri11tianity were pretty agnoe-
tlc. I felt that religion wu foolish
and that Chrietian .. were hypocrite..
And I wqn't juet an lnditrerent ag-

he wu a very happy Individual. So

PLAYBOYS
When I was peddling milk with my dad in Boston in the
old days, a main topic of conversation were the playboys
from the 3 big colleges around there bringing home chorus
girls just before daylight. These college playboys were very
expensive for their fathers, who had to pay the freight for
their nocturnal fun,
Now, here in Newport, we have our own version of the
expensive playboy --not with chorus girls but with an ex-
pensive city budget. We call him the city manager. Our
first one, in 1964, was a very good boy for 4 years, then
things began to happen so fast, he left.
Our second playboy had some fast rules set for him.
But, with a very dis-interested City Council, he is now
paving the way for the next playboy. You see, our first
one built up a $300,000 "rainy-day" fund in the city coffers,
but where did it disappear to? Our latest playboy is building
a $1 MILLION fund for the "rainy day" blues. Why? He's
also got us set up for a $1 million DEFICIT.
I believe our playboy is playing too fast and loose with
our money. We'd better put the brakes on him.
How much longer will the paying public put up with this
kind of reckless spending?
If we can't balance our city budget after selling the clump
site for $616,000, collecting an enormous amount in building
taxes and seeing our assessed property valuation go up
like a 4th of July skyrocket, when will we EVER balance it?
Start counting your money, Mr. and Mrs. Taxpayer. Hasn't
the $10 million tab on the Watergate fiasco made you wake
up to reality about dollars and sense? By the way, did you
know Congress is about to raise the pay of its members
at least $10,000 a year?
If you want to
ican merchandise
too, stop by the
on your mind.
