ARVO E. HAAPA, owner and publisher of the Ensign
• THE GENOCIDE TREATY TRAP
I wrote a month ago to all 4 mem-
bers of Congress who represent our
community, asldng them about their stand
on the genocide convention. The letters
went to Senator Alan Cranston, Senator
John Tunney, Representative Andrew !fin-
shaw and Representative Clair Burgener.
My request was stated as follows: "Know-
Ing the consequences of treaty law and the
possibility that treaties can over-ride
safeguards enumerated In the U. S. Con-
stitution, I am asking you for a public
pronouncement of your position on the
genocide convention." Although the matter
was before the Senate, and not the House,
I included Congressmen Hinshaw and Bur-
gener In the request because their stand
could Influence the ultimate decision.
As of this moment, only one of the
four has had the courtesy to reply to
my letter. That response came from Clair
Burgener, who wrote me as follows:
Dear Arvo:
Thank you for your Inquiry requesting my statement
of position on the Genocldf' Convention. I am most pleased
to comply and my statement follows:
Although as a member of the U.S. House of Represen-
tatives, I will not haTe the opportunity to Yote on this
matter, (since treaties are the responsibility of the U.S.
Senate) I believe It Is Important for all House members
to clearly state their position when requested.
Sincere ly,
CLAffi W. BURGE NE R
Member of Congress
Congressman Burgener is to be com-
mended for his forthright and patriotic
stand on this important issue. A similar
statement from the other three would be
m ost welcome.
The geno~ide treaty is presented to the
public as an international effort to prevent
the crime of "systematic, planned anni-
hilation of a racial or cultural group."
Hitler's diabolic attempt to exterminate
Jews in Nazi Germany is held up as the
type of crime against humanity that the
treaty seeks to prevent. But certainly
no m ore laws are needed to deal with
the crime of murder. There must be
some other reason for the determined
drive by the leftists and ultra-liberals
to place our nation In the perilous trap
of the genocide convention. That reason
must be the Incredible passion for de-
stroying American sovereignty and placing
us at the mercy of one-world govern-
ment, ruled by a United Nations dom-
Inated by the communists.

I wrote a month ago to all 4 mem-
bers of Congress who represent rur
community, asking them abrut their stand
on the genocide convention. The letters
went to Senator Alan Cranston, Senator
John Tunney, Representative Andrew Hin-
shaw and Representative Clair Burgener.
My request was stated as follows: "Know-
ing the consequences of treaty law and the
possibility that treaties can over-ride
safeguards enumerated in the U. S. Con-
stitution, I am asking you for a public
pronouncement of yrur position on the
genocide convention." Although the matter
was before the Senate, and not the House,
I included Congressmen Hinshaw and Bur-
gener in the request because their stand
could influence the ultimate decision.

to comply and my statement follows:
Although as a member of the U.S. House of Represen-

The geno~lde treaty Is presented to the
public as an International effort to prevent
the crime of "systematic, planned anni-
hilation of a racial or cultural group."
Hitler's diabolic attempt to exterminate
Jews in Nazi Germany is held up as the
type of crime against humanity that the
treaty seeks to prevent. But certainly
no m or e laws are needed to deal with
the crime of murder. There must be
some other reason lor the determined
drive by the leftists and ultra-liberals
to place our nation in the perilrus trap
of the genocide convention. That reason
must be the incredible passion for de-
stroying American sovereignty and placing
us at the mercy of one-world govern-
ment, ruled by a United Nations dom-
inated by the communists.

Next, the sealing or the 144,000 in·

!1. A final grou~ of martyrs is seen
in 15:2-4 as those who have come
or:! victorious from the ~ast. After
this the &even bowls full of the
wrath of God are poured out upon
the earth. Now we must add to all
of this th..: f11.ct that nothing is said
of any believing remnant, other
than the 144,000, being left upon
the earth. The exception to all of
this, of course, will be the I I 3 of
Israel who will survive the TribuJa·
lion (Zechariah 13:9) and be tiM
nation born in a day (Ho.ea 6 :2;
Zechariah 3:9; Isaiah 66:8).
Question : How do you interpret
tire sc11cn lrumfHU of Rcvdation1
Amwcr: Since the angels wilL
the seven trumpets arc a part of a
book of rt'vdotion, and since we arc
not told that they arc either symbols
or signs (as the candlesticks or the
woman arrayed with the sun), we
accept the account in its literal sense
exactly a~ given. Here arc actual
judgments of God upon the earth
just as real as the plagues of Egypt.
WJitiam R. Newell, in his book on
Revelation, correctly st ates: "Re-
membering the angelic governmental

scenes by the favorite word, 'sym·

can therefore give to you is to tell
you to read the account and believe

An.rwt<r: The usc of four cups of
wine at tbe Passover is definitely a
Jewish custom, but there is no authori-
tative information aJ to lhe exact time
of their introduction. The reuon gen·

symbolize freedom and represent 1he
four "I wills" of EJ.odus 6 :6, 7. The
first cup is for KiddNsh (sa.nc:titk:.a·
tion}. Kiddu.r!J is the ceremony 01nd
prayer by which the holiness of the
Sabbath arnl other fntivals is pro-
claimed. The second cup is a toast in
praise of God for the deliverance from
Egypt. At this time the boy questions
hi s father (Deuteronomy 6:20). Since
the judgments which fell upon Egypt
arc now reviewed, the cup is some-
times called the cup of judament.

follows for grace after meals. This is
the cup the lord took "when he

and the cup of hlcssing of I Corinth-
ians I 0: 16. It is called in the Hebrew
ko.r sh,-/lr,-rnlmh. Cup of Benediction.
At the fourth cup the Hallcl is con-
cluded and the s,-dtr (~rvice ) ends.
For the Chri stian there is only one cup

How right God wast Every
Christian knows that with brim-
ming health and "good fortune,"
comes the tendency to forger our
need of Him, while infirmity
causes us to lean harder and to
pray mote and this is where our
spiritual power lies. Every be-
liever should acknowtedge this
and say with Paul :
ln Romans 10:11-13 w1-read: "For

Verse II gives a quotation from
Isaiah 28 :16 for the purpose of stn:ss·
ing the universality of the Gospel. This
-particular passage from Isaiah was
quoted by Plul in Romans 9 :33. Since
the apostle has previously asserted ( cf.
Romans 3:22, 23 ) that all alike need
the Gospel, he now points out that the
evangel is for aiJ. Thus, the univer·
aality of the 2ood news is here ( v. 12)
demonstrated by the uni ''ersal lord.
ship of Ja;u, Christ. In verse 13 the
Apostle Paul quotes from joel 2:32, a
paa.aage which was cited by the Apostle
Pd:er in his RTrnon on the Day of
Pentecost (cf_ Acts 2:21 ). The words
of the Prophet Joel may be taken a. a
lt.atement of a general principle, which
ia applicable iu every age that the
Gospel is preached.

What Is a Chrlstlant
By the lete Or. Bob Jon ... St., Ev•ngellst, Founder Bob Jonn Unw.r.Jly
•·sword of the Lord," MW"freesboro, Tenn.
l invite your attention to these words, which are found in
the 26th verse of the eleventh chapter of Acts.
"And the di1ciplu were called Christians first in
Antioch."
It ia not my purpose to talk to you about why they were
called Christians, but I want. if I can, to try to tell you what,
in the Iicht of the Ne-w T~tament, a Chtistian reallY is.
There are many strance
and false ideas about what it
meane to be a Christian. I
auppote if I should walk up
and down these aisles and
ask you individually, What is
a Christian? l would get
many different answers .
Some of you would say.
"People who live in a
Ch ristian country ."
Somebody else might say,
"Peuvle who have been
baptized." And some one else
would probably answer, "A
Christian is a man who pays
his debts and does the best he
can."
Now in the first place. a
Christian is nol a perwn who
lives in what we call a Christian
country. As a matter of fact,
there isn 't any Christian
country in the world. America is
probably more neatly Christian
than any other nation on the
earth, but America is not a
Christian country. Now don't
misunden~tand me. Everything
we have that is really wo1~h
keepinr in our country h.u come
from &he Chri•tian relicion. The
ChrlltianB are the liaht of the
world, and the salt of the ear& h .
It all the Christians would leave
America. the civilization that we
have would go wit}J. them; but
America is not Christian. for the
overwhelming majority of the
people in thi• country are not
ri1ht with God. I do not know a
•inde city on this continent
where the majority of the people
are really on the aide of Jesu•
Chrlst; not even a majority of
the people in America belon• to
any church. and I tell you
frankly, after havin1 preached
the Go.pel in mc.t or the datct
of the UnJon, that I do not
believe flfty per cent of the
church members are really
Chriatiam. You can liw in what
you c•ll• Cbril.tian country and
not be a ChriatLan .
I will tell you 10methinr elae.
You ean join the church. be
baptlaoed, and tab eommunton,
·and not be a Chrittlan. It t.
pGMible to stand in the pulpit
and pnach and not be a

In the liRht of the New

THE FABLE OF
THE FAIRIE QUEEN
This is a fairytale about a nice queen who lived on a
royal isle in a pretty blue harbor by the sparkling sea.
Along with other royalty, Queen Judith shared a private
beach unblemished by the footprints of inland peasants.
But, being a benevolent queen, she was very interested
in seeing to it that the peasants had a place to bathe in
the lovely Pacific. To ensure that the commoners from
the hinterlands had a place to park their chariots while
they bathed, she waved her wand and made a new law. The
law required that the landed gentry living by the shore
provide plenty of empty streets for the peasants to park,
or to do whatever peasants do when they visit the seaside.
To keep the streets open, the queen, in her divine wisdom,
decreed that each landowner park his own chariot in his
castle. Ambitious lords who wished to tear down their old
castles and build larger ones were ordered to provide space
for extra chariots to park on their palace grounds.
The peasants were very happy with the good queen. They
came from the rolling inland hills, the forested mountains
and even the parched desert to splash in the ocean. Most
of them gathered on a peninsula named for the great man
who discovered the Pacific.
But, occasionally, some of the more adventurous peasants
wandered westward onto beaches dangerously near the castles
of the Lord Mayor and other important gentry. But, alas, they
could not tarry long in this hallowed sand, for even peasants
know that When You Must Go, YOU MUST GO. And, in the
western stretches of this seaside paradise, they found no
comfort stations for their earthly needs.
They gathered around their campfires in a friendlier
stretch of the strand and wondered --WHAT TO DO? WHAT
TO DO?
"Let's go to the good queen and ask for comfort stations
in this forbidden province," someone suggested. "And drink-
ing fountains, too," piped up the parched voice of a desert
dweller.
"But, we cannot visit the queen," another common in-
lander reminded them, ''She lives on the forbidden royal
Isle de Lido."
As the peasants considered their dilemma, some of the
braver souls among them could be seen crudely lettering
signs directing those in urgent need of comfort toward the
castle of the Lord Mayor and --is nothing sacred? --even
toward the shores of the royal isle.
For the moral of this fairytale, visit the village black-
smith at the hardware store at the west end of the peninsula
named for the discoverer of the blue Pacific.
