P=· 1•1111. call "Is there any S<:tlp<ute tho! Un &'-e us hope for lifo after delllhl" A.. It has been pointed oul lhol there are untold precious prom~ iSH in the Word of Cod. Not one of them, however, belongs to an individual outside of the lord Jesus Christ. There Is definite hope after death to the child of God. To those who have never made this most important decision of life there Is nothing more th•n un be expect~ ed than eternal damnation. let us take the positive side and suggest such passages as John 14:1-6; I Thess. 4:13-17; I Cor. 15:51-58; John 3:16-18; 10:27-30; 11:25-26, and so many, many others. Yes, there is more than ample Scrip- tural hope and evidence for us to be well assured of life after death! Q. Spokane, WMh. "Can you please explain simply the subjed of tith- inBi" A. first of all, keep in mind that all things belong to the lord. This is the meaning of true stewardship. It is the realization that God en- trusts us to handle that which He has given in a manner which will bring honor to Him. This is the basic fact all too few people act upon. There are those who believe that the tithe began with I Dr. Cllllftlill L. ,-~ rael In the ta:bemade and temple worship . While this was 1 part of it. the principle began long before then. In Genesis 14:20 we find the first mention of the subject. This period was long before the law was given. As New Testament be- lievers, we are told that our re- sponsibility is to give according as the lord has blessed us. Certainly the tithe is a good standard at which we can begin but we need not stop there. Q. Arroyo Grande, Calif. "Should the amount we tithe from our in- come be based on what we actually get, or the amount earned before taxes?" A. Again, we are not under law. This is a matter between the in- dividual and his lord. It does seem that God should not get any less of an interest than the govern- ment. Giving, aft er all, should not be what we have to do, but what we want to do for the Saviour. II is a very insidious thing, this bus- iness of how much we need to pay off our bills. Remember, we have an obligation to God's work, too. As we have pointed out, it is ten tenths that belongs to the lord. He graciously allows us to use. ol:" own love for Him as the cntena of what we give back for His min· istry. Q. SaCtilmento, CAlif. "As a Chris - tian I pay my tithe and love offer- ings to my home churc~; .howev- er, the church is asleep m 1ts soul- winning endeavor. Will I be held accountable if I continue to put the Lord's money into this 'dead horse'? I am tom between trying the church and going to a with real zeal lor souls." there is some mlsundentandlns, and rea$00 for the sltu1tlon, It would be be•l fO< you 10 affiliate with a felk>Wihip where these and other cardinal doctrines of Scrip- ture are emphasized. This Is a mat- ter which must be determined by each individual as he feels led by the Holy Spirit. Q. "Will you please explain the Essenes priesthood7 What tela· tionship, if any, did Christ have with them? Was John the 3aptlst an Essene priest? Is this some form ot cu/17" Such a question cannot always be answered catego rically since w~ do not know all of the facts. If the church does not have an evangel· A Sc:ilfttific Fed istic effort, it is probably dead or A. It was just south of Jericho, along the Dead Sea, where the Essenes had their headquarters dur· ing the time of Christ. At that point in history there were about 4,000 of them who lived an ascetic form of life. In isolation they hoped to escape ceremonial defilement. There was a communal type of life as members gave up all personal belongings. They emphasized daily bathing in running water which was most unusual in those days. Our· ing the summer in Judea it was dlf· ficult to find an available source. They tried to live up to the law of Moses. At Jerusalem's destruction in 70 A.O. they hid copies of the Old Testament in caves before they fled . Their expectation was to return after the Ro man persecu- tions were over. Evidently, they were wiped out for they never did return . Their main village has just recently been excavated. It had been completely demolished and covered by the debris of centuries. It was these Dead Sea scrolls which were unearthed in 1947. They have proven to be of such tremendous valtu• and significance. Because of tht-dry, barrenness of that partic- ular area these manuscripts were very well preserved. We do not believe that our Saviour had any· thing to do with the Essenes. There are no specific indications that John the Baptist had any relation· ship with them either although there have been conjectures of various types on the subject. CLOSE THE DOOR SAM Senator Sam Ervin, our crafty Sheriff of Nottingham, is alarmed at how dirty the political game has gotten. Now he's trying to close the barn door after the horses are out. And the sad thing about this is that Sheriff Sam, himseU, could have slammed the door years ago. You see, just after the Kennedy-Nixon race of 1960, Sam was on a committee that was supposed t o have been clearing away the mud that was thrown in that campaign. Alleged illegal voting in lllinois, where Mayor Daley's Chicago Dem- ocrats supposedly got voters' names from tombstones and had them living at non-existent addr.esses, helped swing that cruc ial state to the Kennedy camp. After JFK found out that s ome of his campaign workers might have done some dirt, he went to Mr. Nixon. Mr. Nixon refused t o push the issue because he didn't want to bring about a constitutional crisis. But, Sheriff Sam and his fellow-committeemen could have du g a little deeper and come up with plenty of wrongdoing. Instead, they whitewashed the whole thing, thus leaving the barn door open for more crooked political horseplay in the future. Now that s ome Republican campaign workers have shown that they can play the game, t oo, Sheriff Sam is all excited. The wrong horses are getting out. Spurred on by politicians who have s o little t o offer that they have trouble getting campaign contributions, our Congress ha s now placed limits on what ANYBODY can donate. This ' limits the efforts of good men t o run strong campaigns and sentences everybody to the same campaigning poorhouse. That leaves the field open t o big newspapers, such as the Los Angeles Times, t o wage long wars against candidates they don't like. The candidates can't get enough money to fight back against these journalistic giants. Look at what the Times did to Sam Yorty , for example. What dollar value could you place upon the 8-year campaign by the Times to get that white man out of office? Maybe a ban on endorsements by big papers·.should be con- s idered, or at least, equal time for the canctldates who are on the short end of these editorial endorsements. You'll be glad to endorse the quality American-made hard- ware we've got down at the store. Stop by for a chat.
