"SO BRIGHT A SPIRIT"
This newsletter is dedicated to the memory of my son
Philip, woo died three weeks ago at the age ol three and
a half years, In a swtmmtnc pool accldeot.
Death is not news; it has been with us since Eden. Some
deaths are news, because of the reputation of the deceased,
or of his relatives. But whether reported or not, whether
known or not outside a small circle of friends, death is
always at our elbow. It can reach out for a.n}· of us at any
moment, confronting us with an enigma that our una.lded
mlnds could never solve. For death Is not natural to man
--we all sense that, in our Inmost being-· yet all men
die.
Our ag11: is terrlfted or death, and therefore blanks It
out. There Is a massive effort to pretend that ft Is not real.
Yet it Is tile Inescapable destiny of every one of us. No
merely humanistic or r.taterlaUstlc philosophy can truly
come to grips with the fact of death, because that ooe
harsh fact makes dust and ashes out of the heart of their
value systems, as it will make dust and ashes out or the
body of every humanist and every materialist. To com-
prehend death --to live with U, to speak in seeming para.
dox ·-we need far more than they have to otter.
The Book of Genesis gives us the nptanatlon of why
death came to man; and Christianity gives us the answer
as to Dow It may be over come. For there was One who
cooquered death --just One. And In Him, we all can rise
to new and glorious life.
One thing can keep us from attaining the fulftllment of
that Infinite promise: persistence in eril, In sln, ln re ~
jectlon of God ·ud ..etnce of His will. But tbat sort of
persistent re)ectlon of dh1ne love and grace Is DOt pos-
sible for a chik!. of three, He ls not yet capable of mortal
sin. Sucb a child, lf he was baptized as Christ commanded,
enters God's presence --whi ch used to be called Heann,
and surely the name still nts --Immediately ~his
death.
Death Is not the supr eme eDemy to a Christian who takes
his faith seriously. The early Ctu"lstlans, seek.lng refuge
In the catacombs where the pagans would not come be-
cause of their fear of the presence of tbe dead, rejoiced
more than they mourned when one of their number died,
since they were confident that his spirit had gone to be
with Christ. Death is the S14Jreme enemy only to those
who have cut thenlselves off from hope and divine love,
and can see nothing beyond the span or their own earthly
life, Yet even for a Christian, a death that strikes close at
home Is an hour ot testing --and an hour for witnessing.
At a time like this, any man or woman will ask why --
why the seeming cruelty and waste of a promising young
!He cut short, of a toss that can never In our world be
regained?
TWs question has driven some to rebellious despair,
to loss of f.a.lth, to the spiritual and psychological wreckage
or an unreUeved grlet. Sometimes the answers to such
questions are very hard to find. l feel particularly for-
tunate that for me, for our family, for Ph!Up, the e:rplan-
ation seems qllite clear.
For Philip was too bright a spirit to be kept for long
in our dar kening world. He was the happiest person I
have ever known. He lived his three and a hall years of
life to the fullest, almost as U he knew hoW sbort a time
was allotted to him he re. We oft en llsed to say to one
another, In the lamlly. '·Did you ever see anyooe wbo en-
joyed Ufe more than Philip'"' He was almost "too rood
to be true'' --and hf' was too good to stay for loog apart
from his Maker.
The Ught he brought into our llves will ne•er be forgotten.
But, far mor e important evf'n that that, his prayers for us
In Heaven can now be of Immeasurable help in preserl'lng
our family from the dangers that threaten every American
family today, and In accomplishing wi:Ja.tever tasks God
gives us to perform. In the past my wtfe and I did our
best to set a gocx.l example and to raise our children well.
But now It Is Ph !Up who, through his prayers, w1lll.n a way
be leading us.
Never has the Amerll!an family stood In such need of
llelp tram Heaven, tor II gets very Uttle on earth any mora.
If the population controllers I:Ja.d I:Ja.d their way, Philip ~
our seventh child --would neYer have been born at all.
If many educators had had th!'!ir way, tte would tan been
tlll'ned against his parents and his raJth as soon as poss:lble
after he came to schOOl. God spared him thlt battle. But
he len us to fight on. And we shlll.

THE BAR TO EMPLOYMENT
There ts no .such thin& as a minUTium wage on a natio nal or
state-wide basis ; for what each of us would consider a
mtnimum varies from lime to time and JOb to JOb and would
differ for each of us
Bul lhcte is a contrived bar to employment, a minimum
lepl rate that denies employment to aU who can't qualify for
it. and prevents employen from hirina people to do JObs that
are not worth the leaal rate.
Raisin& Jepl minimunu inflates labor cost.s and the pnces
we aD mu.sl pay for anythina and everythina. and thai also
adds on taxes to the costs and prices of everythina lo provide
the funds to support those denied employment by these risina
lepl minimums.
STOP COMPULSORY UNEMPLOYMENT
There are now bu1lt-in aspects of cruelty and tyranny in the
w<aUed minlfflum wage laws, as they dcmon!lratedly deny
employment and so discriminate apinst youth, race, and
nationaliJy. The unemployment filures and facts validate !hill.
What is needed at the very lea.st is a loophole for the
unemployed, a lep.l.izalion that would permit I hose wh o have
been unemployed fo r any extended period of time by waae
rates above and beyond their abilities for employment, a
loophole that wo uld then wave all mandatory minimum waae•
rates for all those made unemployable by them.
Give these people a chance lo aet a job, lo act on-the-job
tnininJ and experience. enable thCIC-people to qualify
themselves not only for the so-caHed minimum rates but
eY"entually for maximum rates earned by their on-the-Job
dneloped abilities. Stop makina unemployment madatory for
millions.

When the Spaniards con-

a Span!J.rd ln 1594, entirely
by chance. Tbe legeod tells
the story of a Spanish horse-

atoms fuse t<l(tther forming a belium
atom. Thousands of similar fusions
taking place aimultaneoully cau.e ex·
p&o.ions which puff the star up limilar
fo the way yeast malus bread douch
rise. As lone as a g-reat star ( ooe and
one·hall time'S as large aa our sun or
larger) has plenty of hydroaen. the
fusion or H-bomb exploa:ions (u we
know them) keep the Jta.r puffed up.
When the great star has consume-J
its supply of hydrogm, the H-bomb
e.xplolions subside, and the weight of
the star, which no longer has bubbles
forcing material outward, cauxs th~
star to shrink. As tht: explosions be·
come mort and more infrcqu~u. the

the star will crush its own interior.

SLEEPING
WATCHDOGS
Traditionally, and by Constitutiona l law, Congress is sup-
posed to be our national watchdog. Sometimes, it looks like
the watchdog is either asleep or prowling around strange
neighborhoods when he should be home.
Remember when a couple of our better-known Senators
(one of them is from California) were off on a skiing vacation
in Switzerland at a time when important legislation was being
considered?
More
a daily
we have been treated to the spectacle of
television serial, starring Senator Sam Ervin. While
our eyes have been kept glued to TV, the country's regular
government business has been somewhat ignored.
recently,
Why don't we fine these people, or at least dock their pay,
when they find other diversions more important than doing
the job we hired them to do? Many of our Congressmen are
so busy running for re-election, they can't find time to do
what they were elected for in the first place. The answer
to that problem is t9 elect them for one term only, then they
wouldn't need to cohcern themselves with running around
the country raising money for their .next campaign, and selling
their favors to the highest bidder. Look at the guys who gladly
gave money to the Republicans for the last presidential cam-
paign,
in the
then asked for their money back when their names got
papers. They wanted to bet on a winner, but as soon as
their man won, they wanted a r~fund,
Imagine giving a payoff to the Mafia, then asking for your
money back. You'd get a cement coat for your trouble.
