A. john Wesley was o nce asked, "Why do yo u always preach that man must be bo rn again l " He re · plied , "fo r the si mple reason that you must be born again." This question is basic. You know what b irth means in the physical realm. A new individual has come into the world . On the simple b.uis o f that physical life a person can have a p hysical existence as long as God allows it. In o rder to b e a live to spiritual things o ne m ust al so have a spiritual birth. Wht>n God created Adam and Eve He d id so that they might be w ithout sin. They were innocent untd they d isobeyed. (Do not be too hard on them for we p robably wo uld have done t he samt' thing only q u icker.) Because of this they e nte red into sp iritual death 1Ephes1ans 2:1,. Only o ne thing can change de<l!h a nd that is life. To he alive spi rituall y requires that we be bo rn of the Spirit. This means that we believe w hat the W ord o f C od says abo ut o ur being sin ners. We realize we cannot do dnything to make ourselves right- eous befo re God. Yet . Jesus Christ pa1d the fu ll price fo r us. We ac- cept Htm as ou r Saviour-Sac rifi ce. We s take ou r eternal sal v<~ti o n on what He h.1 s d one for u!O. Wh en b y fa ith we do this then in that mo· ment we are born again of the Sp irit of God. To be born Into th iS wo rld physic.ally ~e did no t have anything to d o whh it. To be born into God's fa m ily me ans w e d o no t have a nything to do w ith it eithe r, since it is all o f Chrisl. In p ractice it means that the o ld d esires a re gone . We believe it is best to use grape juice . hen tha t, how eve r, is not necessary since it is o nly symbo lic. Jesus said, ''Th is do in re membrance o f Me." M issio naries, a way fro m all civili- zatio n , have had to use coconut, berry, o r o the r kinds o f liquid. The element itself is q u ite irrelevant. THE SECOND LAW DF THERMODYNAMICS The second taw of thermodynamics is one of the most universally appl icable t.ws in sctence. There is no known cxcept1on to it. The second law of thermodynamics states that everythins is becomina more and more di50rganized; that everything tends to become simpler, more random, more disordered; that thmgs are gettina old and wearina out; th•t the univei'M 11 runnina down. Mama Miss Bernice Vestal, beloved is a Sacramento City College retired prtncl.pal of Ne'Wp()rt gal. WE'RE NOT AN ARMY Is the military establishment slowly taking over our ci- vilian government? Look around you at some of the power- ful civilian government jobs being filled by military men. They step out of uniform one day and into our councils of govern- ment the next. Is it any wonder then that our bureaucracy keeps growing and growing? After all, these are the same guys who will send 36 men out to set up a 9-by-12 tent. They're accus- tomed to having almost unlimited manpower and money to play with. What qualifies these people to run our lives? Just because a guy can drive an airplane for a number of years without getting killed, does that mean he can take over a big city department or become the top administrative officer of an entire county? President Nixon's new chief of staff came from the Pen- tagon. Surely, there is a capable civilian somewhere who could be trusted with that job. Look at the military commissions held by some of our top lawmakers, such as Barry Goldwater. The Constitution says members of Congress will not serve in the Armed Forces, yet a surprising number of them hold reserve commissions. Doesn't this constitute a conflict of interest when any matter concerning the military comes before these Congressmen? ' Now, there has been a suggestion that the city of Newport Beach hire a military man to take over as assistant city manager. Why? We already have military officers running the police department and the general services department. These fellows are already drawing big pensions from the Armed Forces. We're not an army, We're a city of 60,000 CIVILIANS. Th,ere's been a lot of talk about the number of lawyers involved in the Watergate mess. Let's start making plans to weed out the lawyers, but let's get to work on cleaning out our civilian government of its military bosses, too. • • • When you stop by our store, YOU'RE the boss.
