• ECOLOGY-MANIA IS SNOB APPEAL
The environmentalists and ecologists
are basically anti-people. Or, at best,
they are partial toward the super-wealthy,
who alone can afford the costly conse-
quences of the ecology-mania.
A major concern for all of us should
be to encourage the construction of hous-
Ing that will be within the !lnanclal reach
of the average wage earner. The pop-
ulation will continue to Increase, however
savagely the ecologists strive for zero-
growth. The need !or more modest priced
housing will continue to grow. The ecol-
ogists are doing exactly the opposite --
forcing the cost of housing to prohibitive
levels here In our Harbor Area with their
unrealistic and seU!sh demands for low
density development. The less units al-
lowed per acre, the greater the cost
per unit, and the harder It Is to become
a home-owner, or even an apartment-
renter, except !or the super-rich.
Open spaces surrounding $1 00,000
mansions will not bring joy to the hearts
of the not-so-affluent Americans. What
we need fli less ecology-mania and more
concern !or people.

YMCA otnctals that he didn't
think white fathers were as
close to thelr sons as they
should be.
"White men bul ld cities,"
he said. ''Red men build sons.''
lr~'/.~~r.;;;;~:=il One St. Louis YMCA director, Harold S. Keltner, Ustened to
the Indian's suggestions for Im-
proving !ather-son relations,
and when he returned home he
formed the flrst Y -Indian Guide

BUCK ROGERS
IS HERE!
Buck Rogers is alive and
running our police department.
well in Newport Beach. He's
His spacemen whirl through the skies in their noisy
machines, hovering first here, then there, shining their rays
down upon us. Soon, they wtll have a special space-age light,
being developed by scientists who have worked with the moon
men. With this magic light, they will be able to see more
from higher up --thus enabling them to swoop stealthily
through the thinner reaches of the atmosphere where we
can hardly hear them or see them. But, THEY wtll see us!
A new headquarters is being built for Buck and his spacemen.
It will have the latest electronic marvels of the nuclear age.
There will be a computerized central "brain" that can be
hooked up to your house and will tell the police when your
doors open and close. Buck's new space station will cost
you and me $1.2 million, plus another $220,000 for the "big
brain."
Some folks are beginning to wonder about the wisdom of
giving too much power to one . man. Over the years, our chief
has built quite an empire. Serving on the board of a local
bank, president of the state's peace officers, a commission
in the National Guard. We pay him well, too. He gets $26,605,
plus his Los Angeles pension,
Some old-fashioned policemen have suggested a share-
the-helicopter plan for Orange County cities. This would
give us quieter skies, lower costs and still make the whirly-
birds available on call. Maybe we should back off and look
at this thing a little bit. There's no use rushing 1984. It's
getting here too fast, already.
Can this town really afford Buck Rogers ? • • • •
F or good quality American merchandise you CAN afford,
stop by the store. Let us know what's on your mind, while
we can still talk without somebody listening in.
