HAAPA, owner and publisher of the Ensign • AN INCENTIVE FOR THE MINI-BUS Outlawing cars on Balboa Peninsula, Balboa Island, or any other locality would be highly arbitrary and discriminatory to the victimized community. There are better ways to promote other types of transportation, such as the suggested mini-bus. Provide some incentive to en- courage an ambitious private enterpriser to undertake the project. One promising Idea is to set up a system of validating bus tickets by local merchants so that the mini-bus riders will have an addi- tional reason for shopping at the stores --and leaving their cars at home. • • • • PRICE CONTROL FOLLY HITS HOME Perhaps at last a frustrated and Irate public Is beginning to realize the utter folly of wage and price controls. History has repeatedly proven the failure of this tyrannical meddling In the market place by the government. Now we are seeing the inevitable results first hand In an area that hits us all --the service stations and.,~ as.. .IIJlPI!lY tor DIP" ~arl!r, Closed statlon~h~ ct'gllll .,e the logl<;!,l outcome of ~ Incredibly tflsane ~cfll M tetr's1a~ prices by government decree. The free market will automatically solve the problem of short- ages and overpricing. The law of supply and demand will do the l ob without the iron fist of government and without the hordes of government snoooers spying on us. Let's go back to the free enter- prise system that made this nation great. • • • * THROW OUT PROPOSITION 20 One of these days a frustrated and irate public will also realize the folly of having an unelected coast control com- mission over-riding local ordinances and denying us the right of private owner - ship of our own property. Even those who so blindly promoted Proposition 20 should soon see that they have created a monster that is utterly allen to our American heritage of individual freedom and property rights. If coastal develop- ment can be controlled, so can building everywhere come under the dictatorial rule of the commissars. Let's throw out Proposition 2 0 and preserve our constitutional guarantees of freedom. • • • • NO TAX FUNDS FOR TOURISM Just about at the top of the list for preposterous ideas is the request for $30,000 of our tax money to promote tourism In Newport Beach. Some ctficlals In the Newport Harbor Chamber of Com- merce are generating a soft sell ~ paign for tourism tax funds, even though about 911;{, of our local residents (perhaps it's 99%) would gladly support a "tourist go home" campaign Instead. The ctiy has no obligation to set out the red carpet for hotel visitors. Nor does the Chamber have to put up the cash for brochures ol welcome. Let those who benefit provide the courtesies. Concerning tM forqoiQ&' nne. ( 4-6) the comments of a faithful ex· positor should be obattve.d : "After thts dark picture of death, ruin, and wrath ( vv. I -3 J we read what God hu done and ~. for all who be.l.ieve on His Son , our Lord Jesus Christ. 'But God who i.l rich in mercy, for his great love, wherewith he loved us' ( v. 4). This is the blessed bridge, which leads out of the dark and dreary, hopeless condition. Bt~l God! Mania guilty and lost. But God I God now comes in and makes known the riches of His mercy. Yet a righteous, holy God cannot be rich in mercy unless His right(Ousnes& is fully met and maintained. His mercy must have for a foundation His righteousness. And this is blessN.Iy the cue. He ia rich in mercy for the great love where- with He loved us. He pvc His only begotten Son. He made Him who knew no sin, sin for us. He made full atonem~nt on the cross and now God can be rich in mercy. And what does He do with such a.s we are? Verses 5, 6 tell the blessed story. ~ vcrseJ (5, 6J in which we read of the be- liever's quickening, his z-esunection with Christ and being seated in Christ in the: heavenlies, takes us back to the time when our blessed Saviour Lord wcu quickened and raised from the dead and .seated in Glory. It is plain what God did for Him, who died on the Cros.s, He has done for all who believe on His Son. Many Christians art: ignorant of this great truth, while others have difficulty in grasping it. Yet it is quite simple. Every Ch~ tian believes that when the Lord Je- SU!J suffered on the Cross He bore our sins in His own ~ on the tree. With the Apostle Paul tvery bdiever is entitled to say in looking back to th~ Cross, 'He lo\'cd Me, He gavt H1msclf for me.' We know all our sins. wer-e paid fer by, HMn.; all tht: p~mshment we deserved fell upon Hun, our substitute. In Him we died. All this hap~ncd when we were not in existence at aU . Some people would have us believe that there is not going to be any kingdom for Israel. That is entirely wrong. Again, consider the context. Christ has been speaking to the scribes and Pharisees. The kingdom of God in that sphere where genuine faith has been ex- ercised . We see that in John 3. There is a sense in which the king- dom of God includes all willing as well as unwilling beings. He is the universal Sovereign in the soteri- ological sense. One enters the kingdom of God only by being born again. The Pharisees were not in this kingdom. They had rejected Christ. The kingdom was now to be given to the godly in Israel and to godly Gentiles. Neither in the present age nor in the future mil - lennium is the Kingdom of God the exclusive possession of either Is- rael or the Gentiles. Acts 1 :6 clear- ly shows that there will be a lite ral restoration of an earthly kingdom to Israel. It will be when the Son of man comes back and sits on the throne of His g lory. Today, by faith in Christ, both Jew and Gentile are considered a spiritual nation (I Pet. 2'9). lated. When Christ came to this earth He made Himself of no repu- tation. This means He emptied or divested Himself of His glory alone. He could not possibly cease to be Cod. He simply !et aside the Inde- pendent use of His attributes. Hu· manity could not stand the un· veiled glory of His presence in any other manner. Yes, when Mary was carryi"g the baby Jesus the Trinity was indeed sri11 active. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are very aciive. There were n ot even nine seconds when the lord Jesus could not do any- thing that is an anribute of deity. Q . Denver, Colo. "What is the dif- ference between spiritual gilts and talents? How can I lind out what mine are?" A. While the re are a variety of opinions on the subject, it would appear that the spiritual gifts come at the time of salvation. Talents could fall into the same category and a great distinction need not b e made. When a person does not use what the lord has given him, the opportunity may be taken away and given to another. The Holy Spirit empowers us to use these abilities in a way that will bring honor and glory to the body of Christ. Q. TRey, C~Uf. "In Matthew 24 :34 it states that 'this generation shall not pass away until all these things be lullilled'. In the light of the fact that the Jews once again possess their land, and the common mar- ket nations seem to be shaping up into the end time 10-narion con- federacy, do you think that we are this specific generation?" A. We must be careful not to set dates endeavoring to identity spe- cific c haraders and instances of history in relationship to prophecy. This verse can be best understood as you consider the primary defin- ition of the word "generation.'' It means, race, kind, family, stock, or breed. None of the things re fe rred to in verse 34, the world-wide preaching of the kingdom, the great tribulation, the return of the l o rd in visible glory, and the regathe r- ing of the elect, occurred at the time of the destruction of Je rusa- lem. for that reason it cou ld not refer to a specific generation of people living at that part icular hour of its utterance. We believe the nation of Israel will continue in existence until the lord comes again. After the de- struction of Jerusalem 1n 70 A.D. the Jews were driven out o f the1r land. All these years they have been scattered all over the face of the earth. Yet, w1thout any nation- al ho me, they have not lost their identity. They are stronger to day than ever before. This prophecy then means that this n,Hion of Is- rael would not pass till all these things are fulfilled . In E~ 2 :7.10 we read : "lbat in the agn to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindneu toward us through Christ Jesus. For by ~ce are yt: saved through faith; and that not of your- selves : it is the gift of God : not of works, lest any man should bout. For we are his workmanship, creattd. in Olrist Jt3us unto good works, which God bath before ordained that we should walk in them" In conclusion, the reader of Ephe- siam; should note the significant word "walk" which occurs a number of t;mes, cf. 2 :2, 10; 4:1, 17; 5:2, 8, 15. Reference may be made to Miss Ruth Paxson's Til• W•allll, W4li, oM W...,or, of lA. Ch.Vn.., 1939. Thb helpful book is a study of the practical aspectJ of the Ephesian letter. • Q. B.ttlnbrtdge Island, Wath, "When Mary was carrying the baby Jesus was the Trinity stiff active? t have wondered il there were nine months of time when Jesus could not intercede?" Several things may help you to determ ine your s piritual gifts. first of all, there should be a consiste nt study of the Bible. If we are to grow in grace it must be through the knowledge of Christ which is directly tied in to the Word of God. Next, begin to busy yourself for the lord. for fear of doing some- thing wrong some people never do anything at all. This is tragic and detrimental to your own C hristian A. ONTH BOOB TUBE Well, the boob tube prosecutors are at lt again, They couldn't beat the Champ (President Nlllon) to h18 knees, so they're going to pick on the No. 2 man now. Some small-time politicians in Maryland needed help to get out of a jam they'd gotten themselves into and decided to ask the vice-president, whom they knew when he served in local office there, to ball them out. When he refused, they decided to drag his good name into their mess. How do you smear anybody's name nowadays? Why, Just talk to a TV newsman. Those guys are ready to sling mud at the drop of a big name. Let's be sensible about this. U Spiro Agnew was involved, many years ago, in some kind of wrong doing, do you honestly think his opposition would have let him get elected and RE- ELECTED as vice-president without bringing it up? Of course not, This is nothing but another political smear and the TV clowns are handling it as another of their typical kangaroo court proceedings. The man has offered to let the House of Representatives, which is controlled by the Democrats, investigate him and decide what to do. They have said no. Why? Because the Demo- crats know they can't turn up the evidence, so they'd rather let Mr. Agnew stew in the small-time Maryland political cauldron and, at the same time, let the TV buzzards keep circling over him. Evidently, this whole donations in Maryland. somebody's vote. thing goes back to some campaign Somebody, supposedly, tried to buy Big deal. I can remember Just a few months ago, when a presidential candidate from the other party tried to buy every vote in the United States by offering everybody $1,000 of tax- payers' money. The only guy worse than a person who accepts a bribe is the guy who offers it. He is the crook who tries to stuff the bad apples into the American barrel. Don't listen to the petty politicos who have gotten themselves in hot water and want to find a way out by implicating a fine man. And don't listen to the boob tube prosecutors. Wait for the truth. Let's don't turn into a country ruled by mobs that are incited by television. Be American. Buy American. Ask for American merchandise. Keep Americans See you at the store. ) AL FORGIT URE AT TK£ RARDW . .UU: STORE WE .utE ALWAYS GLAD TO HARDW'.UU:, EI.£CTRICAL !Q111J'MJ:IfT, HOUIIW.UU:S,.
