Concnning this famtliar passage the
ob.ervations of an evangelical com-

second fundamental fact is laid down.
The fit»t was that our warfare is spir-

tphn'e atom bombs are of no more
value than bows and anows. Paul's
picture ~ to be that of defenders

rnentaton have suggested that his de..
scription is one of the forces of
Christ's Church advancin( against the
powers of evil ; but this hardly eeema
to be under considcntioo here. TIM!

a strange paradox that ila~ go1'tl of

Ouistian's panoply of war, but to it
is. The ~lation of this Gospel to the
feet might seem strange to some, but
it finds its illustration (and probably
its origin) in Isaiah 52 :7 (Cf. Rom.
10:15 ). TJte shield of faith (v. 16).
Of the two shields u!ed in warfare the

OUNTY GOVERNMEN
WHO NEEDS IT?
Supporting an expensive county government is sort of like
paying alimony. You miss the money, and you wonder what
you're getting for it. Here in Orange County, I don't believe
Ne are getting anywhere near our money's worth.
Almost all of the populated areas of the county are now
incorporated into cities. What's lett are generally agricultural
or wilderness areas.
So, why do we need a $306 million county budget and more
than 10,000 people on the county payroll? That budget, inci-
denWly, doesn't even include the harbor district or such spe-
cial districts as flood control, etc.
Our cities, which include the vast majority of the people
in the county, have their own governments and their own local
taxing systems. City government is really hurt by the fact
that the county gets to spend vast sums of money paid to the
state --such as sales taxes and gas taxes --which could
be better used by the cities within the county.
And, 1f you don't think county politicians have a lot of power,
just look at some of the campaign expenses paid out by Board
of Supervisors canclidates in the last election, When a man
spends several times his salary just to get elected, doesn't
that make you stop and wonder how he is going to use his power?
One county department that is about as useful as a refrig-
erator at the North Pole is the county education department.
We have local school districts that run our schools, so what
do we need with a COUNTY school department that spends
more than $7 million annually?
What does the county education department do that couldn't
be done by local districts or by the state?
And what has the county health department done for YOU
lately?
City, state and national governments (and
enough of our hard-earned tax money without
on a lavish county government.
