• TIME TO COUNTER-ATTACK
· How long do we have to put up with
constant harassment of the local property
owner by our own local city government?
What have we done to deserve this con-
tinuing onslaught on oor right to own
property ?
These are not merely rhetorical ques-
tions which have no answer. Indeed, an
answer will be suggested at the con-
clusion of this sermon.
We who stand guard over property
rights thought that we had won a measure
of victory when our Newport Beach City
Council abandoned the origloal down-
zoning scheme several months ago, But
the attack never ceases. There is a step
backward every now and then, but only to
maneuver for the time to take another
2 steps forward toward more and more
control. Now we are faced with another
battle, 'again to protect QUr property from
down-zoning, to preserve for oorselves
the rights we had When we purchased
oor property. Again It will take a con-
siderable outcry and show of strength
and determination on our part --not to
win concessions or to obtalo some favor
from oor City Council --but just to
preserve the rights we already possess.
These repeated battles with our own
elected and appointed officials may be
awakening a lot of citizens to the fact
that the greatest peril to oor liberty
comes from our own government. And
It beglos right here at home. That genial,
smlllog cooncllman or planner or com-
missioner, who may be your own friendly
neighbor, is the one wh o jeopardizes
yoor right to own property. He (or she)
joins with other genial, smiling lawmak-
ers to constitute a majority, and little
by little they whittle away at our rights
with laws e nacted "for our own good" --
each new law taking away a little bit
more of our right to live our own lives
and own our own property. The home-
owner is generally busy with home duties
and busloess problems, slow to rise up
in defense of his rights, and meanwhile
the lawmakers are listening to the clamor
of the ecologist, the no-growth crowd,
the environmental doomsday alarmist, and
the result Is the enactment of dangeroos
laws to cope with Wusory emergencies.
So we come back to the questions: What
have we done to deserve all this harass-
ment? How long do we have to put up
with It? What we have done Is NOT to
have done oor home work, NOT under-
standing the concept of lodlvidual liberty,
NOT realizing that property ownership
is the essential foondatlon of freedom.
How long must we put up with the harass-
ment? Just as long as we continue
electing otflclale who do not understand
tbe meaning of individual liberty and the
Yitallmportance ol property rights in pre-
aentng that liberty.
What can you do about It? Y au can do

1 S an introduetloa to the
•ucty of tht fint of two I~
eons from Paul's letter to the
Colossians, it it appropriate
] to ob•ne the remarks of a
devout writtt : "The occa-
...... sion of this EpUtle [ Colos-
sians] is unquestionably to~ found in
the visit of Epaphras to Paul. This
ua.lous Christian seems to have J&dc:
the journey to Rome for the apecia.l
purpose of s«Uring the: advi«: of the
great Apostle:. It wa.s from him (Epa-
phras J that Paul learned all about the
condition of the Colossian church,
from him he hurd of their faith in
Christ Jesus and love: to all the saints
(Col. I :4 ). This faithful worker in-
formed the Apostle of all tM com-
mendahlc: features of the Colossian
church. But while thez-c: was not a
littll!' in the: rc:pon to please: Paul. there
were other things sufficiently grave to
caus-e him gnat concern. An insidious
and danjr!~rous heresy was br:ginning
tn thr~at~n the v~ry existtnce of the
church tht1'e. The lf'aden-of this htr-
esy were evidently JewUh Christians,
the inAuence of who~ teachings was
on th~ incruse. It is noticeable that
thesf' h~-r"d.ics w~r~ not lik~ th~ Juda-
izing teacmors with whom Paul had
had to deal in other placts. Here they
made no assault on the Apostle's
anthority, bu! contented themselves
with htreticar teachings as &scribed
above."
Moreover, th~ same author con-
tinues: "The object of the Epist le, ac-
rording to Bishop Ellicott fa conser va-

part o £ the Apostle:-tu warn the Colos-

in its character (2 :18), and panly
Judaical and cer~monial (2 :16), wh ich
was tendinjr! on th~ one hand to ob-
scure the majesty and giOf)' of Christ
(I :15 ; 2 :81. and, on the other hand,
to introducf' ritualistic observances,
espe~.:ially on the side of bodily austeri-
ties (2 :16-23), opposed alike to the
s1mplicity and freedom o'f -the Gos-
:ptl, . and to :all tru~ &nd vital union
··with the risen Lord (2 :19: 3:1).' The
main design of the Epistle consc-
fJu~ntl y was to refut e thesr: heretical
ideas. and to warn the Colossian Ouis-
tians againt them. The supreme g-lory
nf Christ is the princip4l theme of this

tlu: Books of tlu New Testame11t, 12th

Furthermore, in the consideration of
the purpose of Colossians, the follow-
Ill~ observations of a modern Biblical
sdwlar are worth)" of note: "We may
iertainlv conclude that the thrtat from
till " falSe teaching was of such a char.
acter that an immediate corrective
wa;e: impe rative and that this was the
real purpose of thi! l~tter. Paul has
t1~n mam problems to settle, one doc-
lrlllal. conaming the person of Christ,
the other practiOll. respecting the life
nf th~ Ch ristian. The Epistle {Colos-
sians] contains a high Ch ristology.
Chri st is pre~inent over all other
creature~ and over creation itself. In
fact, all things were not only created
by Him but for Him. He is seen at
the ~nter of the universe, sovaeign
over all principalities and powers, over
all agencies, that is to sa.y, which might
challenge His authority . Not only so,
H~ is the image of God and the po.s-
.set.'IOr of the fullness (pln'omo) of
God, and thl"~ stat~ments could not
fail to exalt Him to an equality with
l ;oo. Ht is further described as the
head of the Church , which is conceived
of as H is body . The Christologial
pa.ssajr!e (Col. I ·15-19) in which all
thest" ideas are expressed is followed
1mm~diately b}' a stat~ment regarding
C hri~t's redemptive work (I :20ff.)
and this work is supported by the
further statement in 2 :14 that in the
cross Christ triumphed over all His
enemies Clearly Paul's purpose is to
rlem.onstrate the immea.surable superi·
ority of Christ. as contrasted with the
inadquate presentation of Him br:ing
advocat~ by the Colossia.n false
teachers" (cf. DonaJd Guthrie, TM

These verses (9-1 .. ) of our Biblical

the Christians at Colos~. 1be Apostle
is truly concerned with the -progress of
the Colossians in ~spcct to the Chris-

the note of thanksgiving is worthy of
careful study. In this connection it i!l
interesting to observe the exposition
of this particular passage by an evan-
g~li ca l l'Ommentator : "For this caw.s1

Sound doctrine is in order to right
conduct. Nor is the latter possiblt
without the former. Note the chanc-
teristic correlation or doctrine and be-
havior. For Paul, Christianity is not
a mere 'way of life' in the accepted
modern se~. but always a way of
life founded upon a doctrine. Utsto

'pleasing everybody.' The phrue goes

human form, and the statement about the ~ of a
woman, not man, indicated His virgin birth.
Gen~is, chapter 4, reveals that Adam taught this
si n-offering to mankind. Cain and Abel of the same
family bac kground and training approached God.
Abel was accepted not because of his charact~r or
works but becau se of his offering which was th~ sin-
otf~ring brought in fai th (Heb. II :4). As Cain
ex:pressed displeasure at not being accepted of God,
he was urged by God to approach through faith in
God's sin-offering. Cain, who was the first public
propagandist of apostasy, as is characteristic of apos-
tasy, hardened himself in si n by rejecting God's re-
vealed truth and admonition. This hardening led to
violence which murder~d his broth~r Abel. Cain
desired acceptance by God without the intercession o! God's La!nb (I Tim. 2 :5) and through trusting
h1s own ment. He approached God in a way which
appealed to his own reason, all of which i.s an illus-
tration o f apostasy procedure in every age.
Jude II wams that present·day apostate teachers
belie~·e and act similar to Cain. Genesis 4 ~nd 5
record seven generations of Cain which bi'"OUgbt
ruin upon mankind fllhi ch in tum caused God's
worst catastrophic judgment through the flood
(_Genes~s 6). The flood was God's judgment upon
sm wh1ch produced thought life and terrible im-
mon..lity that shattered marriage sacrcdnus even to
the trading of husbands and wives, indicated by the
statement, "giving in marriage" (Matt. 2•:38).
Apostasy filled th~ eanh with violc:ncc (Gen. 6 :11).
V 1olence an reach such a stare as to make it merci-
ful for God to end the generation. Jesus warned
that apostasy in its opposition to God's Lamb would
produce conditions similar to the days of Noah
(Matt. 24 :37-39). Important events are usuaiJy

And what makes this such good
news? Is it not that the Gospel of-
fers eternal life to every poor si n-
ner who will take it'? If an angel
proclaimed that God had sent him
to offer us any one thing we might
a!'l k-w hat would be your cr y?
There would be but one r esponse,
and the cry would make heaven
ring : "Eternal life! Eterna l life !"
It is life men want and value most.
If a millionai re on a sinking vessel
could buy another six months of
life, he would give his million in an

eternal life." And il'l it not one of
the great marvel.~ that men have to
Rtand and plead, and pray ancl be-
seech their fellow men to Lake thil'l
preciou!-1 gift of God? Yet ~orne
people, when thiR good news i~
preached, put on a long face, a!-1 if
they had to attend a funeral or wit-
ne~R an execution or hear !'oOme dry
lecture.
lt wa.-t my privilege to go into
Ri chmond with Genera l G rant's
:1rmy, where I heard that the Ne-
groes were going to have a jubilee
meeting. TheRe people were ju~t
coming into liberty; their chains
were fallinlo{ off. and they were just
awakening to the fact that they
were free. l have heard mJwy elo-
quent men, but I do not think I
have ev~r heard eloquence ~uch a~ I
heard that day in the African
[ Methodi!o!t F.:pi~copal] church frum
a c h<ipl ain of a northern regiment.
NO MORE ON THE AUCTION BlOCK!
"Mot hers!" he cr ied. "You re-
joice today. That little child hn~
been torn from your embrace and
sold off to !\orne distant state for the
last time-you are forever free!"
"Young men!" he called. "You
rejoice today. You have heard the
crack of the slavt! driver's whip fo r
the last time-you a1·e forever free!"
"Young maidem~!" he exclaimed.
"You rejoice today. You have been
put on the auction block and solrl
for the la..'lt time-you are forever
free!"
I WH.!4 never in !-lllch a meeting.
Men and women, !Joys and girls,
everyone, clapped the ir hands and
s houted, "Glory to God!" They be-
lieved that it was good news.
But my friends, I bring you bet-
ter tidings than that. No slave ever
had s uch a mean, wicked, cruel
maAle r as those who are serving
Satan. And to the poor sinner who
has been so rebellious and wayward,
the Go!!pel brings a message of for-
giveness : "Be ye reconciled to God.''
Jt ie hi!! message of friendship.
When Christ left heaven, he went
down into the manger that he might
get hold of the vilest s inner and put
his hand into that of the Father.
He died that we might be reconciled
to him. Is not this Gospel of recon-
ciliation a glad Gospel?
And it is also a free Gospel; any-
one may have it. You need not uk,
"For whom i& th is good newa?" It ia
for you! If you would like Christ's
own word for it, eome with me to
that ~teene in Jerusalem where the
dlaeiples are biddio.-him fareweU.

NONE SO DESPERATE AS THAT
I thHnk Cnd thut the Go~pd is to
be preached to every creature. I
thank God the commission is so
free. There i~ nu man ~ fa r go ne

no man ~o desper.ate but God can
fo rgin him.
A few year~ H):W the pref;lident of
a state prison oommission stood in
the pri~n chapel before 1.-lOO....a,a..
sembled convictfl und announced, '"I
hold in m_v hand pardons for five
men-for good behavior.''
Every man wa~ a~ ~till as death ;
many were rleadly pale. The sus-
pen!'oe was ;~w ful.
"Reuben J ohn!'On will come and
get hi ~ pardon," ~ai el the prison of-
ficer, and he held it out, but no one
moverl. AKain hE' sairl , "Reuben
Johnson will cum1• and get hi!'o par-
don. It iR Kig-ned ancl sealed by the
governor . He i~ a free man." Still
no man came fo rward .
The prison chaplain looked down
at Reuben ; he was well known. hav-
ing been there 19 yea r~. Many we re
watching for him to sprin~ to hi~
feet. Rut Reuben himM>If WHR look-
ing around for t he fortunatt! man.
Three timeR the c haplain had to
say to him, "Reuhf>n, come anrl get
your pardon.'' At la ~t the t r·uth be-
gan to ~ten! over the old man.
Trembling, he came forwar·d, took
hi!'o pardon. looked at it, went back
to hiR seat, buried his face in h is
hands and wept.
When the prisoners got into
ranks to go back to their cells Reu-
ben got into the ranks, too a~d the
chaplain had to call to hi.;.., "Reu-
ben, get out of line; you are a free
man. You are no longer a prisoner."
Reuben stepped out. He waH free !
That is the way men make out
pardons. They make them out for
good character or good bo:!havior.
But God make!\ out pardons for men
who do not have any good bl!havior.
He offen a pardon to every sinner
on ear th if he will take it. I do not
care who he is or what he is like.
He may be the greatest libertine
that ever walked t he s treetn, or the
greatest blackguard who ever lived,
or the greatest drunkard or thief or
vagabond; but 1 come tonight with
glad tidings.
I thank God for the "whouoevera"
of the invitations of Christ . ''Who-
soever will, let him take the water
of life freely." I know thHt word
"whoeoever'' mean8 every m.an, wo-
man and child in t.hia w..1rld. It

PROP. 1
Next Tuesday is the chance we've been waiting for. The
people are actually going to have a chance to do something
about cutting their own taxes I And we thank Governor Reagan
for the opportunity.
Ever since he's been in office, our governor has tried
to get some real tax reforms through, but he has been held
off by a Democrat-controlled legislature,
Robert Moretti, who is going around bad-mouthing the
governor's tax initiative (of course he's really running for
governor), has been one of the main culprits in this ob-
structionism in the legislature. Now, he wants you to vote
WITH him against the tax initiative next Tuesday, and vote
FOR him when he runs for governor. Well, if you want a man
who would spend $50 million of your pension money for
Israeli bonds, he's your man. If you want a man who is
against the death penalty, he's your man. If you're against
tax reform, he's your man. All it amounts to is that Moretti
cry babies are wailing because we're about to take away
some of their play money. The money they're playing with
is mine and yours.
Look at the previous Democrat administration in Sacra-
mento. What a farce! They're the guys who let the college
campuses degenerate into battlegrounds and billboards for
gutter language. They're the ones who tried to ram a freeway
down your throat. Do you think they've changed? Well, one of
their front-runners for the governor's nomination is named
Edmund G. Brown, Jr.
If that loudmouthed bunch in Sacramento and in Washington
is the best the Democrats have to offer, God help their party I
Get down to the polls on Tuesday and vote yourself a tax
break. Vote to give the governor a chance to put the skids
on the wild spenders. The state you save, and the money you
save, WILL BE YOUR OWN .
