THE LORDSHIP OF CHRIST IN THE UNIVEISE In Colossians I :15-17 we read : "Who is the image of the invisi~e God, th<' firstborn of every creature: for by h11n were all things created, that are in hav~. and that arc in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones. or dominions. or prin- cipalities, or pr1wen . all things were rreated by him, and for him : and he 1s before all things. and by him all rlungs consist.'' The foregoing passaa:e (vv. 15-17) ~ts forth the supremacy of Christ in the world. In the·considef"Ztton of these ver.ws (15-17) t~ comments of Professor F. F. Bruce, of England, a coMerVarive scholar, are relevant : "Paul follows up his reminder of the benefits which his readers [in Coloue) have rtttived in Christ with a state- ment of the primacy of Christ over the created universe. This is one of the great Qristological passages of the New Testament, d~laring as it does our Lord's divine essence, pre- existence, and creative agency. Yet , high a! the Christology is, it does not appear to be original to Paul himself, but rather part of what he 'received' as primitive Christian teaching. Cer- tainly the doctri~ here set forth is practically identical with that ~ forth in two non-Pauline passages of the New Testament -John I :1-4 and Hebrews 1 :2-4. 1 All thr~ passages have an Old T~stament background, which is seen especially in Proverbs 8 :22ff., where Divine Wisdom, ~ sonified , claims to have been with the Almighty at the beginning of His ways and to have been His assessor , if not His agmt, in the work of creation. If we ask how the early Church came 10 unanimously to speak of her Lord in terms of the Divine Wisdom, the an- swer must be 50ught in His own teach- ing. Hert, however, Christ ls pte" sented a..s the agent of God in the whole range of His ~racious purpose towarda ~:nen, from the primeval work of creation through the redemption ac- complished at history's mid-point on to the new creation in which God's purpose will he OOnsummated" ( c f. Colooolo01 1 :9·:10 This Biblical pauage (vv. 18-20) is a significant assertion of the pri- macy of Jesus Christ over the church. Here the puaphrase of the!lf: v~rses by a faithful scholar of tht ninet<:f:nth ~tury should be observM: ''And not only does He [Ouistl hold this posi- tion of absolute priority and sover- eignty over the universe -the natural cr-ea.tion. He stands also in the same relation to the Church -the new spiritual creation. He is its head, and it is His body. This is His prtrogative because H e is the sourc~ and the be- ginning of its life, being the first-born from the dead. Thus in all things - in the spiritual order as in the natural -in the Church as in the world - He is found to hav~ the pre-eminence. And this absolute supremacy is His, because it .was the Father's good pleas- ure that in Him aJl the plenitude of Deity should have its home ; because He willed through H im to reconcile the universe once more to Hirn.setf , It was God's purpose to effect peace and hannony through the blood of Christ's cross. and so to restor~ all things, whatsoever and wheresoever they be. whether on the earth or in the heav- ens" (d. J . B. Lightfoot , Sai11t Paul's Epistl•s to the Colossian.s a11d to Phi- lemon. 1892, pp. 154. 156). Thus, Je- sus Christ is truly presented as the Lord who is suprellle over the spirit4 ual creation. "He is head of the body, the Olurch" (v. 18). • Jbo 0..-L-Women in the Church "Sword of the Lord,'' Murfreesboro, Tenn. Durinr a r~ent series or artidn upon the heresy of the toni\IH movement of our day we just brierly mentioned I Corinthians 14::«, "Let your JfJ)Qlell-.keu e.ileace in the churchn: for it ia not permitted unto them to speak: but they are commanded t o be under obedience, aa alao saith the law.'' A letter came aakin1 that we ro into that 1ubject a little further. That it, the reneral 1ubject of a woman'• place in the church. Let it be said that a woman is a wonderful invention. When God faahioned the wQrld and made all the veretation and animal•. He crowned His labors by making a man. "And the Lord God aaid. It i8 not rood that the man should be alone: I will make him an help meet for him" (Gen. 2:18). The word "meet" here means fitting or rirht or proper. So God'1 purpoM i.n malcin1 the itnt woman w• that 1he mirht be helpful to the man. It ls sirnUK:an t that God made the man first. It is also •ienificant that God made man in Hil imqe, that i1, masculine. T hen •cod made a woman Lo help the man. Th• man bei.nJ made fint and beinr made in the ima1e of God. was directly accountable to God. The woman was to be accountable to man and then to God. Of cour1e. when it comes to the matt.er of salvation, every 1oul i• individually accountable to God. But in home relatiomhi.,. and i.n spiritual matters of leadenhip the man is directly accountable to God and the woman indirectly throu1h her huaband or flither or whatever man i.s in authority. That principle i8 illustrated ln Numbers 30 concernin1 vo .. lhat a woman mirht make un'to U.. Lord. If s he made some vow and her father or her hu1band diu.llowed it when he learned of it, the vow waa "of none effect: and the Lord shall for,Jve her" (Num. 30:8). It will be noticed that the flgurn used here rela te to a spirit· oal condition. Such is also the ca~ when it is applied to a believer, as is done in the Pu/pir Commenlary: ''This is evidently intended to give additional impulse to the Ephesi11 ns to wal~ as children of the light .. when the Church gets the light of heaven. she is not to lie d:ill , as if she were asleep or dead, but is to be active, is to make use of the light, is to use it for illumi- nating the world ." Since your qu~tion deals especially with the application to the Christian, let us enlarge upon this. Sleep and death have been used through the centuries as figures of passivity, inert· ness, stagnation. inactivity. insensi- bility, etc. The Lord Jesus used the figure of sleep in the parahle of the ten vtrgins to teach the need of 1'-eing alert: "Watch therefore .... ," " ... he would have watched," ". , , he yc also r~ady" !Matthew 24:42. 43, 44): "Watch therefore ... The nation is attacked by effort to eliminate it through famine. M always God's grace defeats Satanic oppo~ition to the work of God's L-.mb as occurred through Joseph, a type of Cllrist, preservinc-the Jewish race from elimination through starvabon. Satan Seeks To Destroy a Nation Satanic opposition to eliminate the nation throogh which the Lamb was to come is revealed hy sin whkh placed the nation in an Egyptian casket with the king's decree! that th~ nation be eliminated through murder (Exocl. God's grace through the service of Moses delivers the nation Israel from Egypt, and p reserves it at the Red Sea and through 40 years of wilderness travel notwith- standing many failuns God ward by the nation, God's grace is ever sufficient, but the only hope for the <fe. feat of all opposition, past. present, and future, leads us to Jesus the Lamb of God. Jesus Christ is the very grace of God (Titus 2 :11). Jn the Book of Jud~s 300 years of Israel's history in Palestine is recorded; seven simple apostasies by the nation are described, all of which were Satanic attempts to prevent the salvation promised througtl the Lamh of God. God's deliverers were not ~ generals, though a number such as Gideon were great generals. They were named judges because they so judged apostasy in Israel as to bring the delivery . Llessings f rom God. In Judges, apostasy developed a lawlessness Godward similar to present-day trends and expressed by the closing statement of the Book which declares, "Every man did that whi<;.h was right in his own eyes" (Judges 21 :25). Elijah's great prayer of victory on Mount Canile:l climaxed a battle with apostate Baalism represent-d by 850 servants (1 Kings 18). Baalism was the stronrnt apostate system of that day. Israel's ten tribes were later carried into captiviy by Assyria because of their apostasy ( 2 Kings 17 :!· 23). About 130 years later Judah was carried ini captivity by Babylon because of its apostasy (~ Cllron. 36:18-21). As soon as he listened to Satan, how· ever, and set his will against God's, all began to go wrong. H1s life was now oft center and out of balance. It was no longer sub- ject to one central Will . Alienated flom God. man now reaped the fru1U of h1s rebellion, not only 1n hiS bantshment from Parad1se, but m the sel f·will of his off· sprmg. Of the IHst two children born mto the wodd, one bludgeoned the other to death and thts was but the beginning. Whereas God had onginall y created man m Hts own "image" and "likeness" (Gen . And so parents down through the ages have begotten children like themselves, with fallen na· tures and wills of their own, until today we have some three billion wills operating in the world in· stud of the one, central will of God. Our Coastal Commission, which administers Proposition 20, re- minds me very much of that bird. The automobile honey- moon is over, but the commission can't see this. They keep insisting that people should live in one place and work in another. With no low-cost apartments or duplexes, how can a working man live in Newport Beach? He can't. He must live elsewhere and drive here, thus making our bad traffic problem even worse. We're going to have to start living closer to our jobs. The Freeway Fighters of Newport pointed this out in 1965 and 1966. We're running out of gas. But there's one thing we're not going to run out of, and that's people. Where will people live? Newport doesn't want them, Laguna Beach doesn't want them, neither do Petaluma, or the states of Oregon or Utah. Proposition 20 and similar wild schemes have decreed, in effect, that Americans can no longer live where they want to. When an American citizen is born here, an event over which he has no control, where the hell is he supposed to go? Must we all migrate to Israel? No, they only want Jews there. Where can we go? What right have these political administrators to deny us the right to live where we want? You'd think they were dealing with cattle. These are people. American citizens. Councilman Paul Ryckoff has a good idea. People who work in Newport should live here. But, how can a working man afford to? A single-family residence is expensive. The only city employees who can afford to live here are the very administrators who make it so tough for others to afford Newport living. We need some low-cost housing. • • • • Buy American, sell American, be American. That's our philosophy down at the store. • * • • P. S.
