* I REMEMBER WHEN---
When I was a lad of 6, my parents
moved from the h6me where I was born
to another farm a little closer to town.
There was a small house on the !arm,
and my dad's first project was to build
a new house big enough for our family
of 5 and sturdy enough to shelter us from
the sub-zero weather of the coming Mi.n-

Perhaps you are getting the message.
T hos e were the days of maximum per-
sonal freedom . We knew nothing of the
tyrannical-and oppressive power of gov-
ernment. Taxation was at a minimum.
Government was still limited basically
t o the purpose for which it had been es-
tablished by our Founding Fathers --to
secure the rights of life, liberty and
ownership of property. There were no
hordes of government agents probing Into
our pe rsonal and business affairs. There
was no myriad of laws or regulations
stifling the Incentive and ambition of an
ener getic people. There was not the awe-
s ome national debt to erode away the
value of our savings. "Sound as a dollar"
was still a proud boast, because that
U. S. dollar was backed by gold and was
r e spected throughout the world.
I am not asking for a return to "horse
and buggy days." But I do yearn for
a r eturn t o the sound principles of our
constitutional republic as It was founded
almost 200 years ago. Restoration of the
freedom that our Founding Fathers fought
for would be an honorable objective for
our bl-centennial celebration. It Is not
too late to turn away from the ruinous
course we are now pursuing --back to
fiscal sanity, private enterprise and per-
sonal liberty. It can be done --if we
have the courage to be free again.

I sAIAH , one of the major proph·
eta of the Old Testament, exerclaed
hla mtniarry 1n the elghch century
before Chrlat. This devout aervant
was God'a mo·.!~plece during an
eventful petlod in the blqtory of
Judah. Isaiah, who-.e name means
.. Jehovah is salvation• or •salva-
tion of Jehovah, • has been called
the St. Paul of the Old Testament.
Also, •the prophet Isaiah, tbough
he Ja not the earliest of tbe writing
prophets, may be desc:cl.bed as the
greatest of them; for the book that
bears his name , 1n the variety,
beauty, and force of its style, and
1n the subllm!ry of its contents,
takes the-foremost place in the
prophetical literature.· (cf. James
Robertson, •The Old Testame nt
and Its Come nts,• n.d., p. 87.)
M o r eo ve r , the following
remarks of a faithful Presbyterian
ministe r of this century should be
noted: "Of all the booka of the Old
Testament, we could least afford to
lose the book of Isaiah, for there we
have the Gospel befor e Christ came
to preach it and to s e al it with his
blood. From this book the people
of God in every generation have
found pre cious promisestosustaln

through this world. There they
have seen Christ In all the pathos
of his suffering, uplifted for sin-

r este d beside s oftly flowing wa-

r ock, and have trUSted 1n the Lord
of the way. The re they have stood

Land, and, like the pilgrims in
John Bunyan's allegory •The Pil-

"The gre at ve rses and prom:.ses

THE WARNING OF CHRIST, ODES IT APPLY TO OUR TIMES?
by G. H. Pamber, M.A.
From "THE EVANGEL," Box 25, Largo, F'la.
"But as the days of Noah were," is His awful declaration, "so shall also the
com ing of the Son of Man be. For as in the days that were before the fl ood they were eating and drink ina, ma rry ing and giving in marriage. unt1l the day that Noah
entered into the ark, and knew not until the flood came, and too k them all away; so snail also the coming of the Son of Man be." Matt. JUuv. 37-39. Thus the closina:
scenes of this present age will be a reproduction of the days of Noah: the same intense worldliness. and at last positive inability to care for the thines of God,
which was d isplayed by the antedi luvians, will also be characteristic of our world
when Chr ist begins the judgments that wil l quickly culmmate in the story of His
appear ina.
tt seems fair, then, to infer that this second manifestation of the spirit that worMed in them which we re disobedient before the flood w1ll be effected by a
conjunction of causes similar to that wh ich formerly produced 11. And hence, as
we have already remarked, it becomes a matter ot the greatest practical import. ance to comprehend those causes: for whenev er they are aaain found to be simul·
taneously affecting the masses of the world's population, the fact will aff ord a strong presumption that we are dn ft ing rap1dly to the great consummation of
wickedness: that the. avenging glory of the Lord is about to be revealed, so that
all flesh shall see it together.
For us, therefore, the great question is, Are these fatal infi:Jences now in oper-
ation? Are they more un tversally characteristiC of this epoch than of any other?
Mature cons lderat1on has Impelled many to return an afl~rmative answer: let us see whether facts warrant us in holding the same v1ew. It 1s impossi ble to eKag.
gerate ou r interest 10 the Investigation. If the present t1mes are only beg inn ing
to take the compleKion of those of Noah, they send fort h a piercing cry of warn· ing, admon 1shing us to .stand with our loins girded about and our lamps burnin&
wa1ting for the summcihs of the Lord. For He will remove His Church. as He removed Enoch, before the wickedness of man has come to its worst He will take
away that wh 1ch He Himself has caHed th e salt of the earth, and then the cor·
ruption of all flesh Will go on unchecked, and the world speedily ripen for its
doom.
The seven area.t causes of the antediiLIVian apostacy have been already noticed,
and may be summed up as follows.
THE SEVEN CAUSES OF ANTEDILUVIAN CORRUPTION. ARE TH!Y ALL
IN PRESENT OPERATION?
I. A tendency to worship God as Elohim, that is, merely M the Creator and Benefactor. and not as Jehovah the covenant God of mercy, dealina with
transgresors who are appointed to destructio n, and tindina a ransom fof
them.
II. An undue prom inence of the female JeX, and a dis~rd of the primal In of marriap.
Ill. A rapid proeress in the mechanical arts, and the consequent invention of
ma ny dev 1ces whereby the hardships of the curse were milllllled, and life wn rtndered more easy and indul;.ent. Al10 a pt"Oficiency In the tine arts,
which capti\lated the minds of men, and helped to induce an entlre oblivion
of God.
IV. An alliance btrtween the nomi nal Church and the World, W'hieh speedlty
resulted in a complete amatsamation.
V. A vast Increase of population.
VI. The t11jectlon of the preachln1 of Enoch, whOM warnlntP thus became
a savour of death unto the world, and hardened men MYond rtctwel)'.

KYMLA'S -KAPEas
Councilman Carl Kymla says he won't run for City Counci.l
this time, _because his water district jobs take_ too much of
his time. That's good. Mr. Kymla did find time, though, to
give a blanket endorsement to any incumbent councUman who
wants to run again. That's bad. Mr. Kymla says he~• proud
of what the present Council has done. Well, let's loca at the
record:
Promontory Point and Versailles, both handled very, ama-
teurishly by the Council, reared their ugly heads into our
fishing village skyline.
Then, at Mr_. Kymla's insistence, we the taxpayers paid
over $90,000 for a couple of lots on the edge of a cllff that
wouldn't even make good grazing land for a mountain goat.
The purchase of the "goat hill" lots preserved the view
of the lady who started the whole thing. The lady then sold
her house, with its beautiful view, and left town. Would Mr.
Kymla have spent his own money for those goat hill lots on
Cliff Drive?
A million-dollar police station, turned down by the voters,
was okayed on the pretense that the police need a "sub-station"
on the east side of the bay. We will now sit by helplessly and
watch that sub-station become the new police headquarters.
They kicked the people out of Marinapark. Now, instead of
getti ng $150,000 in annual rent, we. will get a tennis court with
131 parking spaces. And, speaking of parking, -our Council
added 250 spaces to the Balboa parking lot. That's a heck
of a way to cut down on traffic.
The Coast Commission was allowed to run roughshod over
the property rights of local citizens. The Council talked a lot
about that --but did nothing.
Absenteeism became the rule rather than the exception at
Council meetings, and taxpayers financed junkets for our coun-
cilmen, who traveled hither and yon doing absolutely nothing
fo r the people of Newport.
The Irvine Co. got a gift of $650,000 worth of traffic, lights
fo r Fashion Island, then hired one of the councilmen who okayed
the lights, as a lobbyist.
Our city manager became undisputed heavyweight s.p_,ndtng
champion. He hasn't lost a decision yet, and Mr. Kymla bas
been in his corner all-the way, helping him get steady pay .ra1Bes
while spending more and more of our money.
Yes sir, Mr. Kymla, this has been some CouncU. Going
by the record, your recommendations should carry ~ "lot of
weight. About as much as I could carry out of one ot your
water reservoirs in a leaky ttn can. • • • • \
For cans that don't leak, and for all kinds of good ~rlcan
hardware that you can depend on, stop by the store.
