If it isn't "hot war" it's "cold war." There is mounting ten- sion between different nations and ideologies, between East and West, between capital and labor, between black and white. Our homes are no refuge, for even there so often there is strife between husband a nd wife, between parents and children. Said an Army in!ltructor to a cadet , "Your platoon is almost sur. rounded, you have lost several men. and you are runn ing out of ammuni. ti on. As platoon commander what steps would you take?" "Long ones, sir," was the reply. But man cannot take long steps to escape hi s dilemma. He is like a hunted animal with nowhere to hide. The fact ia , man is at war with man because man is at war with God. Behind the huma n battle there is a spiritual battle. It is the age-long fight between light and darkness, between good and evil, between God a nd Satan. But how js the battle going? Any. one trying to assess t his impartially might be excused for concluding t hat the devil was winning hands down! But the man who studies Bi. ble prophecy is neither surprised nor dismayed . H e knows that God never promised t hat t he Gospel would gradually Christianize the world. He knows that God's present purpose is to call out of the worl d a people for Christ called the church.' He knows that while G<>d is accom. plishing this, often with powerful movements of his Spirit, the world situation will co ntinue to worsen, wi th increasing tribulation. lawless· ness and evil.' How then will it all end? Imagine a game of chess, Right versus Wrong, in which Wrong seems to be sweep- ing the board. But Right is calmly waiting for that strategic moment when he will move One Piece, and say to Wrong, "Checkmate!" It is God, not Satan, who will have the last move, and that will be the promised return of Jesus Christ to Planet Earth. Not this time in hu- mility and ob8curity, but with myr- iad! of angela 8.8 his escort, in the most dazzling display of power and splendor this world has ever seen. Both Old and New Testamenta abound with predictioll8 of this great event. ln fact there are many more prophecies concerning Chrtst•a Second Coming than his First. It will be the vindication of God'A whole plan of redemption, for it will involve the overthrow of Satan and all h..i11 hOflts. The book of Reve. lation provides a fttting climax to the Bible, for this final battle and the events leading up to it are it.R central theme. At the end of hi• earthly lite JesUfl apOlr:e to h ie diaclplee: of his departure to his Fatbe(a abode to prepare a home for them there. That means his return will be per.Yonal. Then he would come back "in the same way." He had left them in a real body, for Thomas had been invited to put his hand into hi s Mas:ler'A wounded side. So his return would be phylfi. co.l . T hen in Revelation we read, "Look. he is coming with the clouds! Eve ryone will see him. "• That means his return will also ·be visibl~. Tllere is a p_rophecy tha.t ·suggests he will even return to earth at the ver y same spot. the Mount of Olives.• God revealed to Paul that this great event in its first phase would invo lve the rapture (carryi ng away) of the saint.'l. "There will be the shout of command. t he archangel's voice, the sound of God'~ t r umpet. and the Lord himself will come down from heaven ! Those who have died believiug in Christ will be ra i~ed to life fi rs t ; then we who are living at that time will all be gath- ered up along with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we wi ll always be with the Lord."' Concluding n great chapter o n the resurrection of the body, Paul states : "LiAtcn to this secret : we shall not a ll die, but in an instant we shall all be chan~ed, as quickly as the blinking of an eye, when the la."'t trumpet sounds. For when it sounds, the dead will be raised im- mortal beings, and we shall all be changed ."~ Th is change. of cou rse, refers to ou r reAurrection bodies rather than to a moral or spiritual transformation. It is in t hi s sense that we shall then be made like Christ.• The change will be instan. taneous and permanent, and will fit us for a new mode of exiAtence where we shall dwell in the presence of the Lord for ever. What will this Second Coming of Christ mean for the world? For those who have rejected him it will mean judgment. In hi R parables J esus often taught that his coming at the end of the age would mean the punishment and destruction of the ungodly." Paul referred to the coming of the Lord as being with flaming fire to punish the godless and unrepentant with "eternal de.- struction."11 This solemn prospect should sober us and send us out to reach others while Grace still holds the door open. What will Christ's coming mean to t he careleM or disloyal soldier of Christ'! Jeeus warned his disci plea repeatedly that his coming would be sudden and unexpected, like a thief in the night.'' For thia reason they were to be watchful and pray. erful, and not be caught unawares like the reet of manJdnd.11 The com· mand to watch is now more neces. sary than ever for the temptation 1<> tall aoleep Ia that much rreater Ju~t before the dawn. Romans throng the Colosseum 88 the two are Jed out to die. For on~ moment there is a hush as they stand alone in the center of the arena. Suddenly from high up in the gallery a voice rings out, vibrant and strong, across the great amphitheater: "Maranatha !"•~ ("Our Lord, come!" in Aramaic, the watchword of the early church.) The lords and ladies turn to see whence comes thi s barbaric cry. Matron and maid lift their heads and a smile from another world lights up their faces. Then with a roar the lions are upon them, and two valiant soldiers have fought thei r last fight. This hope that sustained saints and martyrs in their darkest hour will do so to the end of time. Men may take away from the Christian his position, his property, and even hi s very life, b~t they cannot rob him o"t. hia hope-that Christ will su..rely rcom&, that his [the Chris· tian's] fi delity will be rewarded and his faith vindicated, that t he end will be certain victory. As Peter would say, this is no "cunningly de. vised fable," but sure and sober tr uth. Let it fill your vision, fortify your fait h, purify your heart, and steel you for the fight. And then, having f ought to the end, you too will stand with Chris t at last, victor on the field of battle. c:::>t OJ Ac,. !$ !l I Pt!" ? 9 {?) Merr~ew 2-f·t ·ll; 1 Tlmomy J 1·5. NEWI'OIIT -•amo• lliUIISMY, FEB. 21, 1174 coaA ao. 1M!!, CAL.- FREEWAY FOLLIES Once upon a time, in 1952, there was a freeway route that Newport Beach liked, It ran along 16th St., the so-called "in- land route" for the Pacific Coast Freeway. The county liked the idea, the Irvine Co. offered to pay for a bridge across the bay at 16th, so the freeway could lead shoppers to what is now Fashion Island. Costa Mesa wasn't even incorporated at the time, so it looked like a cinch we would get that inland freeway , Then, things started happening, Walter Burroughs, publisher of the Costa Mesa paper, had a shopping center on 17th St. and a home near the 16th St. route. He . was against it. He wanted the "coastal" route, generally following Coast Hwy., to be adopted for the freeway. OurNewport publisher at that time, Ben Reddick, was against the coastal route, because he didn't want to see · his town split in half by an 85-ft.-high ribbon of concrete. Dennis Carpenter, now your state senator, was Mr. Burroughs' attorney. Suddenly, in 1953, under some very curious circumstances, Costa Mesa was incorporated. Costa Mesa, Burroughs, Carpen- ter, and company succeeded in killing the 16th St . route, So, old Ben Reddick put his main-eventer, Councilman Al Forgit, into the ring to knock out the coastal route , This was in 1964. Paul Gruber, by unanimous Council vote, became the Council's watch dog on the fight. Peg Forgit answered phones, wrote letters, booked flights to Sacramento for husband Al, and generally handled the paperwork. There followed 8 years of hard infighting. Newport probably would have lost, if some of the boys up north hadn't decided to take out big chunks of the Pacific Coast route up there, Don't for get, a l ocal vote, overwhelming though it was against free- ways, does not determine where the state will build. Don't confuse this early freeway fight with the later "Harbor Freeway Fighters," who simply fought the Council and con- vinced them to put the thing to a vote. The vote was nothing but a popularity contest. It carried no legal weight, except to keep the Council from signing freeway agreements without the vote of the people. The state still has the last word on where freeways will go. And nob ody now on the City Council took part in that first real freeway fight. Wonder what would happen if the Irvine Co. suddenly renewed that offer to build a 16th St. bridge ? If a 16th S,t. route went to a vote of the people, what would happen ? Very interesting thought. Incidentally, who is keeping the people from voting on that proposed "expressway" through Corona del Mar's 5th Ave . <:·orridor ? Al Forgit, Chairman Newport Beach Freeway Fighters Stop by the store and we'll answer any questions you have about the long freeway fight. Incidentally, both Burroughs and Reddick won that fight. Who lost? The motoring public? ~
