It is mind-boglina to realize what a billion
dollars really is . Consider the foll o wing:
If an individual borrowed one billion dollars
and paid off his debt (without any interest) at
the rate of SIOOO per day, it would take him
2739 years to satisfy the obligation. Or, in

It was no surprise to us in 197 1 to ~ear Mr .

surprise us is that even though Richard Nixon

0. ol 1M _. ·-DMC phenomena
in the history of education ia that a
speculative philosophy based on no
true scientific evidence could have
been universally adopted and taught
as scientific fact in all the public
schools. This philosophy is the very
framework of modern education, the
underlying premise in all textbooks,
"The iact that th~ historical back-
ground of this part of the book is so
far ~yond the l1fetime of our prophet
has given rise to the theory of a
·second Isaiah.' which regards these
chapters 140..66 J as the W'Ork oi an
unknown writer wh~ lived during the
exile. While this thwry ~ms to
solve one problem, it also cr~tes
another one. If it were true it would
mean that the greatest Keni\1!1 among
the Hebrew prophets, the one who
was endowed with the highest quality
of prophetic inspiration and made .the
richest contribution to M~ssianic
prophtcy, has disappeared from his·
tory without !raving a trace of his
penonality b<t:hind. There is no otl\er
case in the literature of Old Tnta·
ment prophecy wher~ the name and
identity of the prophet ha.s not been
prcsened along with his writings.
That being the case, the most reason-
able way to deal with the problem ,is
to take the book as it has come to u~
(rom the Jews them~lves and as we
hod it in the Bible. jewish tradition
is not to bot discarded as worthless
Thrre mnn be some explanation of
the fact that Isaiah, the friend and
adviser of Hezekiah, wa.s regarded
as the source of atl tbe propheeiu· M
this book. The New Tntam~t knows
o f no other author. In johll 12:38-
40 a quotation from the last part of
Isaiah {53:1) and a quotation from
the first part (6:10) are both referred
to one man. No one knows enough
about the peculiar experiences of thr-
Hebrew prophets under the divine
urge of prophetic ins pira'tion to qualify
him to say that the proph~t Isaiah
could not have written the last twenty-
seven chapters of the blxlk."
Mor~over, the same author writes:
"This section of the book (chaps. 4()..
66J, then, may be reprded as the work
of Isaiah's old age, several years after
his more· active ministry had dosed.
In anticipation of the Babylonian
captiv ity, which he (Isa.iahj had aJ.
ready foretold, he wrote down his
visions of the return from that cap-
tivity for the comfort of the e-xiles.
and for the consolatK:m and comfort
of God"s people in all ages. As he saw
that return, he became a participant in
its sctne, and passed in rapt contem-
1Jiation to the still brighter and
grander events which that deli.,ennce
typified.
'"There are three stages in the pro-
gressive development of relkmption
as we see it unfolded through this
part of the book. Each stage occupies
nine chapters. The first is a prophecy
oi the restoration from captivity in
Babylon as the preparation for re-
demption (chaps. 40-48). The next is
a prophecy of the redemption of Israel
from sin by the su ffering of the right-
eous Servant of tht: Lord (chap&. 49-
57). And the last is a prophecy of Lhr
final glory o f the redeemed ~le
of God ( ch•l"· SS-66 ). Each of the
thr« divisions begins with a chapteT
which is a key to the whole and ends
with a brief reference to the punish·
ment of the wicked. Redemption is
thus announced against a background
of judgment." (d. John McNicol.
Thi,.ki"g TMough Ou Biblr, n .d.,
Vol. II, pp. 111)-112.)

Jesus said, '"Thi.J .rickness is not unto death
but for the {!.lory of Cod, that the Son of cod
might be glorified thereby .. (John 11 :4).
Louis E. Bisch , ~1.D., wwte an article en·
titled, "Turn Your Sickm·ss Into an Asset."
"Any serious illness," says Dr. Bisch , .. should
he regarded as an opportunity to gather
dividends and generate energies that mere
health cannot possibly bestow.'" He goes on to
tell of Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau,
Eugeue O'Neill, Florem:e Nightingale, and
others whose sickness became a distinct turn-
ing point and b lessing in their li ves.
Our Lord, who takes us much more into the
mystery of suffering. goes far deeper and de-
dares that sickness may be for the glory of
God. When they sent and told Him )hat His
friend Lazarus was sick. what stnnge sym-
pathy He gave! How unlike the kind of
"get-well'" card we would send. I wonder if
Lazarus did not receive so much out of that
experience, which thus euriched him, that he
would not have given it up for anything in the
world. At all events, this is the word for you
who are smitten with serious illness and tem-
porarily laid Uide, or enfolded in the· sheep-
cote of shut·ins. These things may abound to
His Glory. Further, they may be both for your
emichment of life and your joy.
Jn saying thjs, may f assure you that I am
not speaking merely from theory, but out of a
very personal experience that <:onfirms to me
the words of the Book. 1 have spent some ,'3()
wt.:eks. on different ocx.-as iuns, in hospitals as a
patient with great suffcrin~. ha\·in)! my life
dt.·spain'tl of more than once. 11u• longest pe·
riod durin~ which I was uuahle to carry on
was ten months. II was a very hitlt-r disap-
pointment to be stru<·k down in the prime of
lift• and usdulness. with a family of little chil -
dren; but it has become one of the richest ex-
periences of my life . I would not now ex-
chan~e it for a year of travel, nor anything
else of which I can think Like Jacob. I havt'
suffered ever since from a physical handicap
as a result. yet the most fruitful years of my
ministry have been those since f was ~tou ched
in the hollow of the thigh."
~f ay I mention, then, seven "Cloryings"
that come to us through sickness, and that
also abound to the glory of Cod.
The Glory or Chasl.ening
First of alJ, there is a distinct g lory just in

FOOLISH SEASON
The foolish season is upon us. Politicians go around prom-
ising things they can't possibly deliver. As our City Council
candidates go campaigning around town, they talk about a park
here, a traffic problem there, a bridle path someplace else,
and give the voters an absolute guarantee that they'll get what
the folks want. The fact that it takes a majority of 4 Council-
men to do anything seems to be of no concern, whatever.
There's one important thing NONE of the candidates is talking
about --THE BUDGET. Are we going to have another Council
that just turns the whole thing over to a free-wheeling city man-
ager? Somebody better start thinking about the hard times ahead,
and cutting down on spending. We have all of the indications of
a miserable depression. Gas and sales tax receipts are down,
people are being laid off from work, inflation is growing by leaps
and bounds, and our system is developing a lot of shortages.
So what are the politicians talking about? Giving themselves
a pay raise, of course.
Our Council candidates should be very concerned . with the
upcoming annual budget. Some of them might look silly getting
elected, then having to abstain from voting on the budget, be-
cause they don't understand it. Don't laugh. It's happened before.
Another responsibility of our new Council wm be the police
department. Candidates should be checking into the reasons
for the fast turnover in personnel in recent years. Is it because
the chiefs are raking in the dough, while the Indians are under-
paid? Training a policeman is an expensive proposition. We
should keep them after we train them.
And, of course, Buck Rogers still wants to play electronic
warfare, with Uncle Sam helping him push the pretty .>Uttons.
Incidentally, our expensive police department's budget might
be helped if we charged insurance companies $50 or $100 for
investigating auto accidents for them.
Another thing the candidates are very silent on is the Lido
Isle beach lease. If the homeowners there paid $100 per year
each, they would just about match the $86,000 annual income from
the Balboa Bay Club property, which is also city-owned.
And, why all the bickering and politicking over the express-
way through Corona del Mar. The City Charter is very clear
on this matter --the PEOPLE must vote on it, and that's that.
One last suggestion, candidates --how about ralsing the park-
. ing meter fees in recreational areas?
* * * * Want to shop where prices . are being held within reason, and
where merchandise is high quality? Stop by the store.
P. S. If what they're doing in old Newport Beach is planning,
then let's eliminate the Planning Commission.
