federal district court convicted Hiss of
perjury and gave him 5 years."
Despite Mr. McCabe's scorn, the truth
1s that we did not have enough fear of
communism, because by now It has spread
to a third of the globe and stands as a
spectre of terror over the entire free
world. Mr. McCabe has the obligation to
do his homework instead of passing on
pink-tinged misinformation to his read-
ers. For a starter he can read Chambers'
classic, "Witness," and then he can
decide who is the creep --Whittaker
Chamber, who broke away from com-
munism to expose the Soviet conspiracy
that had permeated high echelons of gov-
ernment in Washington --or Alger .Hiss,
whose perjury conviction resulted from
his lylilg about transmitting U. S. secrets
to communist Russia. • • • • ROBERT WELCH --15 YEARS LATER
Robert Welch's 2-day session with 11
' businessmen and patriots, launching the
anti-communist John Birch Society, was
held Dec. 8 and 9, 1958, in Indianapolis,
That lengthly monologue was later put
Into print to constitute the Blue Book of
the Society, and was also filmed In con-
densed form for a recruiting document.
It was that fUm that first introduced
me to Robert Welch, back in 1960.
A week ago Saturday I listened to Mr.
Welch at the Century Plaza hotel In
Los Angeles, once again reviewing the
history of communist subversion as de-
tailed in the Blue Book, and then looking
to the future with some optimism for
victory in the long struggle. The wor,:ls
of optimism deserve repeating, but first
it is pertinent to r~port the frightening
accuracy with whlc!• Mr. Welch described
the communist Inspired methods for sub-
verting the United States. Here they are
outlbed more than 15 years ago:
1. Greatly expanded 11:0vernment spendlng to get rl<l of
ever lar~ter sums or American money.
Z. Higher and then muc h higher tues.
3. An Increasingly unbalanced .budget, de spite the hJgher
taxes.
4. Wild lntlatlon of our currency, leadtng rapidly towards
lts ultimate repOOiallon.
5. Government controls of prices, wag9s, and materials,
supposedly to combat lnrta.Uon.
6. Greatly tncreued soct.aUJttc controls over every
operation or our economy and every activity or our dally
lives. This Is to be accompanied by a correspondingly
bup lncrea&e In the size of OlD' bureaucracy, and In both
the cott and reac h of our domestic government.

BARRETT: I believe the current general plan has pretty
well deftned the concerr.s of the people of ·NeW'J)OI't Beach,
GLAZIER: The controls I favor are aimed strictly at
dwelling Wl.lt numbers and density. The recently passed

• REGIONAL GOVERNMENT --WHAT FUNCTIONS DO
YOU CONSIDER REGIONAL IN NATURE, THAT COULD
NOT BEST BE HANDLED BY LOCAL GOVERNMENT,
AND WHAT F'UNCTION, IF ANY, SHOULD REGfONAL
GO VERNMENT PLAY IN OUR POLITIC >\L LIFE?
BARRETT: I think s mog control and rapid transit are
examples ol regional government that are ftmctlons that
should be tllilndled 1n that matter. I believe elected olflct.als
are best representative to Joeal government within the
jurlsdlr.Uon of the city .
GLAZIER: Regional fWJctlons such as public transit sys-
tems, flood control systems and the Hke are the buslness
of regional government I favor local control lor other
areas whenever possible and I do not wish to create any
further layers of KOVernment than Is absolutely necessary.
I beUeve that regional cooperation, well worked at, is a
better answer than regional contro. The overview ot reglonal
government Is so broad aod the decisions they must make
are frequently so narrow, that the people making those
deCisions hue not the inlormaUon to make them well.
McKERREN: Assessment and collection of property and
otheT taxes ca.n be more economically done on a county
or state-wide basis. Inter-reLationships of Incorporated

SlNC£ I HAVI written the ScUnc~
cnwt th.e Bible column f or over
ten yean, it &eemB fitting that I con·
elude with a personal testimony. I
am Pennaylvania Dutch, and one of
my ancestors, William Rittenhouse,
built the ftrst paper manufacturinr
plant in America in the d&yll of Wil·
Uam Penn. I grew up in rural Penn~
sylvania and went to Sunday school
regularly from the time of my earli-
est recollection, of ten walking long
distances to do so. In one period of
over nine yeats I did not miss a
Sunday for any reason at all. The
Bible was t he first book I read out-
aide the schoolroom. But for aJI this
religious instruction, 1 did not know
tbe goepel. When I waa in high school
and waa already a chun::h member,
I once asked my Sunday school teach-
er what some people mean when they
say Christ died fo r us. The teacher
did not know either , so I did not
find out till later.
Evolution was taken for granted
anrl wM not an issue. As my grea~
est interest was in biolo_gical science,
I b0:1came a thoroughgoing evolution-
ist at a rathe r early age. When I
learned what the KOSpe l of salvation
by p:race means -that we cannot
_AI!_equaU>Iy please God by our own
effor ts or good works but for our
salvation must de~nd wholly upon
the reconciliation Christ made by His
sacrifice upon the cross. I could not
accept this fact because I !laW that
it could not be brought into aa-ree-
\fMnt with evolutionary them)'.
; I wu so sure the evolution was
true that I could not believe the
Genesis account of creation with it~
histDrJ of the fall of man. I beli eved
that people emenred g radually from
an animal ancestry, and therefore I
could not bcliew that the re were two
urst people who we re di!\tinctly dif-
f('rent from animals. Thus I could

This is where evolutionaey bell~f
logically leads.
I thought that if someone could
disprove evolution to me, then I
could believe. But I waa so aure that
evolution was t rue that I did not
expect this to happen, and it did not
happen this way. Aa I grew older.
I associated with people more liberal
than myself. As a result I became
still more liberal, and knew penon-
ally people who have become well
known as liberal leaders.
One nip;ht I went to a church where
a minister was preaching the gospel.
None of it was new to me. Every-
thing he said I had heard many limes
before . But to everything he said, I
said to my9elf. "I believe that." This
surprised me, for I thought I would
never say that until someone dis-
prov~:>d evolution to me. There was
no invitation of any kind. and no one
knew anything had happened to me ;
but I knew there was a chan)!'e.
I W('nt to a univers ity library and
n'ad articles on evolution by evolu-
tionist>~ in the scientific journals. I
was surprised to find that evolution
was not th£> fact I had s upposed.

It is an intereslmR fact that great men are often harder to

Asking God's Blessing On It
An ngt'd !:crvant of Ch ri5 t was invital to lea one evening at the home o( a
gentleman who profesS('(! to he a Christian, but whose life and ways were
w.~orldly . The man of God, before leaving hi.• home. spent some lime in prayer,
uking belp (rom God to witne!la for Him in Ole ramily whose guest he w.u
invited to be. Arter tea the lady of the house invited those present to have 11
game of cards. to which the n,~;C'd mnn of God m.'lde no demu r.
The carda were brouj:ht and lnid upon the table. Just ns the play was nbout
to begin , he Arose and s:~id:
"Let us ask the h!ellsi ng of God upon what we are about to do."
Everybody looked a t each other in ama:r.emt>nt. They thnu~ht the man was
mad. At length the ho!!less said:
"I nev('r hE'ard of !urh a thing before, Mr. , as asking God'a
blessing on a Kame of c.ard!."
"Indet>rl," replierlthe man of God. "I nC\•er en~al-!e in nnything without Mking God to b!f'9!1 ml'. I remPmbcr that it is written. 'What~oever ,.e do in word or
dero do all in the Name of the Lord Jesus. giving thanks to God!' Col. 3:17.
"H you cannot ask God to bless you in playing (';uri<~, thot most clearl y proves
that you ou~ht not to piny card! at nil."
The reproof had il! effect; the card.!J WflfC bid aside. n.nd. it is said. were never
use-d in that home n,eain.
There is a 11'!>-'IOT"J for you, dear reader, in the answer of the mo~.n of God. U
you c-n nnot honestly Mk God to bless you in wh:ll you do. you may safPiy con-
dude that it i! not of Him. If you find yourself en~taf::cd in doing something that
you cannot do "in the Namr. of the Lord Jesu!l ", then thnt ough t not to be done at nil. -
This simple and God-given teat npplied. would settle hundred• of queationa
that ri!:e up in our d;;~ily path. a!l to the ''right" or "wrong" of certain thinga.
Some !ay they "see no hann" in c-e rtain "recreationa". They say that they an~
only "innocent amuseml'nte", ond that a Christinn may ah:ue them wilhout hurt
to hi! spiritual life. Thi! sounds very well, but it is the devil'• sophistry.
The !landard by which God's child mu!lt test the "ri~~:ht" and the "wrong" of
everything is not by itll "innncenee" or "harm", but by, I• it for the tlory of God?
Can H is ble!llling be e:r.pectcli upon it? Can it be dono in tha Name of the Lord
Jesus.? If not. then clearly it is not for you as B Christian to engage in.

SATAN CAUSES DOUilS
But mankind in ~nen.l has never

JUMBLED JAWBONING
'
Newport's City Council candidates are doing a lot of jawbon-
ing, but they're not saying much. In fact, what they're NOT
saying is more important than what they ARE.
Now that the Corona del Mar bypass thing has.. been settled, at
least as far as local decisions are concerned, why don't the
candidates talk about some SOLUTIONS and some positive sug-
gestions, instead of telling us what they're against?
One of the biggest local issues coming up is the matter of
the Lido Isle beach lease. To hear the candidates talk, you'd
think they never heard of Lido Isle. Are they going to take a
stand on this issue or not?
One candidate refuses to talk about anything except the air-
port. Has he ever heard of the Police Department, which flies
more hours, and at weirder times, than any airplane in Newport
Beach skies? This is another issue that the candidates just
won't discuss.
And how about the budget? I mean, that's only my money
and your money that they'1·e going to spend. Wouldn't it be nice
if they gave-us the courtesy of telling us how much they will
spend, and where it will go?
These candidates are sharing the ballot with several sug-
gested changes to the city charter. Some of these changes are
sub!tantial and will have a definite long-term effect on our
city government. Have you heard any candidates discuss these
changes? I haven't.
And what are the candidates offering to do in order to make
Newport a permanent, residential community? They're talking
about more parks, more bike trails, turning the Marinapark
' community into a parking lot, and ruMing busses all over the
place. It took us 20 years of work to get rid of our resort town
image. Now, Yfe're headed back that way again, and nobody seems
to be doing -anything to stem the tide. There's an energy short-
age, There's no better time to cut down on parking lots and
curtail the helicopter flights.
Instead, these guys keep whipping the dead freeway horse
and talking nonsense. Never before in the history of Newport
Beach politics have so many said so much about so little.
