• DEFENDING THE WHIPPING BOY
The Irvine Company has long been
the favo rite whipping boy of politicians,
r eformer s and a lot of just plain cranks.
T o be sure, the Irvine Company is quite
c apable of · suffering these slings and
arrows, but even so, a word of support
and encouragement is in order. Here
are some excellent comments offered
by Charles E;. Brown, president of the
Newport Harbor-Costa Mesa Board of
Realtors, in last week's Realty Board
newsletter:
As much as th e Irvine Company has contributed to the
civic, social and economic wel!are of our community over
the years, I find it exceedingly difficult to understand

As r eported in last week's Log, a.,
ag onizinf(ly accurate prediction of the
techniqu es used in subverting our nation
was g ive n more than 15 years ago by
Robert Welch on the occasion of the
f ouncli n~ of the J ohn Birch Society.
T h r ee weeks ago in a major address
at the Ce ntu r y Plaza hotel in Los Angeles,
he r eviewed these communist inspired
methods and pointed out the alarming
degree of success of the conspiracy. Then
he loo ked forward to the next 15 years
with words of optimism and encourage-
ment. He noted that already the com-
munist advance has been slowed by the
extensive educational efforts initiated by
the J ohn Birch Society, plus the work
of othe r patriotic organizations. How
stands the battle? The odds are now
about even, a considerable improvement
over the s ituation of several years ago,
according to Mr. Welch. He outlined
the foll ow ing program for victory for the
ne xt 15 years:
• Restor e complete
the United States; get
U. N. and the U. N.
independence of
U. s. out of the
out of the U. s.
• Make our money again redeemable
In gold to prevent the recurrence o!
contrived inflation as practiced by the
past administrations --from Roosevelt
to Nixon.

installation of oolse abatement equipment.
10. That the county lntti.ate a proa:ram of economic
Incentives for alrllnes to tly quieter,
11. That the county prepare the tun environmental
Impact report on Orange County Airpor t.
12. That .the county enforce the state rerulatlons Im-
posing a $1,000 penalty on violation of the upper SENEL
Umlts (single event noise event level).
13. The county require all jet aircraft to retrofit their
aircraft to meet or exceed the FAR Part 36 standards
within a r easonable tlme.
H. To lncrease the number of monttorlng stations
In Newport Beach to obtain a more comprehensive picture
ot the noise Impact.
15. Finally, tbe county s~rvtson muat ftnd a tlnal
solution to the Orange County air transportation problem,
whether It be the cr ea.Uon of a new airport or the uttuza-

GERONIMI : Jet nta:hta should oot be Increased, and
should be patterned to dlaturb the least number of people.
A new airport Js the best solution, I believe the coat
of the airport should be lttted trom the bl.cb ot the
taxpayers a.nd made to pay tts awn way . Noise reduction
can best be solved by eUmtnaUon of jets. Commuter
flights uttllzina: non-jet atrcralt are preferred. • • • •

JESUS NEVD FAILS
Right at the beginning of tM sin
of the hwnan race, God told Cain that,
while sin lay at his door, so also was
there a sin offcri"J. and if he did
well by acceptin.r 1t, he would also
bt-accq>ted by God (G~n. 4 :7). Cain
refused, but Abr:l obeyed, with the-
result that Cain was cast out and Abel
was "accepted in the beloved" (H~b.
11 :4 ; Eph. 1 :6). The Bible record is
full of incidents oi acceptance and r~
£usal or simple neglect (H~b. 2 :3),
and in every c~ when man accepted
God's invitation, he was acctpted ar'ld
was taken into God's family to enjoy
eternal li£e.
HO' fVllYONl'
Isaiah's invitation is one of the
best known in all the Bible. It has
b«n recited and sung: "Ho, every
one that thirsteth, come ye to the
waters, and he that hath no money ;
come ye, buy, and eat ; _vea, come, buy
wine and milk without mon~y and
without price" (Jsa. 55 :1). God's
blessings have no price to pay, and
cannot be bought; salvation is abso-
lutely free. The price ~ was tbe
life blood of Jesus Chnst, the most
valuable and preciow price thai ~er
wa.s paid by anybody for anything on
this earth. It cannot bt: duplicated or
·reputed, and there is no substitute.
It is universal -.. every one that
thirsteth" -meaninR' all whole souls
are unsa.tis6ed b«ausc they are sep-
arated from God . That includes cvery-
ooe because there is no ~. joy, or
comfort outside of coo : "for he
satiS>fieth the loncing t.oul, -.nd filkth
the hungry soul with goodnes.s" ( Psa.
107:9).
A CERTAIN SOLUTION
This appeals to our reason. Why
gpend money for stones instead of
bread, and why work for things which
do not satisfy_? Giv~ heed to God, eat
only good things, and let your soul
deh~ht in comfort and ea~. But this
invitation is for the soul. not the body
of fle sh. Body hu~ is serious and
uncomfortable, but soul hunger is
devas_t~ti ng and deadly. Yet, com·
parat1vely few pepk ever think of
feeding their aoul. They try to aatis-
fy their soul buncer by goinc into
all kinds of cxcesxa and utremes
with the:ir bodies and minds, but souls
are not fed that way. You c:annot
buy soul [ood. We must incline or
turn about or tunc our ~ars to hear
the Word of God instead of the clang,
clilffiOr, or rhythm of the world. We
are to tune out Station WORLD and
tune in Station GOD. The two pro·
grams are entirely d ifferent in every
respect. One leaves us in a jilngle of
uncertainty and the other in a repose
of peace. O ne leaves the soul dead ;
the other gives the soul life.
A PRESENT INVITATION
God may withdraw H is offe r. We
an~ to accept it while it is open. Jf
we accept it, theu old things pass
away , the wicked abandon their old
evil ways and habits and desires, and
the u~ly man who is, therefore,
not right with God, even forsakes his
unholy thouchts, for then he trutiks
a.bout God, and God's promises, mer-
cies, love, and a:ift.-.. His soul is dear
of torrow and remorse ~ it
first hu been pardoned, and then filled
oYet"wbelmingly with the roodnesa of
God. God promises to open up for us

And. further, this invitation has
power to equip with God's Word aU
who accept" it. This it quick and
pow~rful and sharper than any two-
edged sword, and is a discerner of
the thoughts and imerns o f the heart
(Heb. 4 :12). It wiU never ~ail !O
accomplish iu mission, and 1t w11l
prosper in God'1 work. It com~
from God and will return to Him
without loss or failure to de His wiD.
God give1 the guarant~e that, as the
rain and snow fall frorn the heavens
and return not, but watereth th~ earth
and mak~ vegetation grow and mature
to produc~ mar~ seed fo r more crops
and to furnish food for all who eat

it will not return to Him void.
UNIVERSAL 'lAC£
UIXH1 accepting God's invitation to
suTTender oursel ves completely to
H im, and being equipped with His
Word, then we shall go out with joy,
be led forth with peace, and all nature
will rejoice with us. Instead of thorns
shall coll\e up the. fi r tree, and ;nstead
of thr brier shall come up the myrtle,
and all this shall be an everlastint
sign tha1 shall not be cut off. How
can anyone refu~ such an invitation
without cost or price? Yet the world
today slights His invitation . Boys
and girls watch d~basing things on
TV and cry out for false life and
thrills, and set:k the illusions and de-
lusions of the world which end in
so"ow, frust ration, and death. Men and
women plod and strive in the tread-
mills of worldly society and eco-
nomics, <Ind. wedded to their false
gods. fail to obtain pea«, joy, or com ·

and s<~;"·dust of worldly pleasures and
have fdiled miserably (Luke 14 :16-
24: 15:1 1·24).
AN OLD INVITATION
We turn from God's ri chlr spread
tables to eat in the ~tters of the
world. Y e1: the invitation £iven about
2,700 years ago through Isaiah i.s stil1
proclaimed : "The word U night thee,
even in thy mouth, and in thy heart ;
th.at is, the word of faith, which we
preach ; . that if thou shalt confess
with thy mouth the lord Jesus, and
shalt bt:lie ve 'in thine heart that God
hath rai s~d him from the dead, thou
shalt be saved" (Rom. 10 :8, 9). When
a candle is lighted, it begins at onoe
to give a light. So, when we are
saved, we must begin to shine a.c.::ord-
inJr to the light that is in us (2 Cor.
4 :6). We are fed, for we have God's.
sa~ food for our souls toady, "Jesus
said unto them, I am th~ bread of life :
he that cometh unto me shall never
hunger; and he that believeth on me
shaU never thirst'' lJohn 6 :35).
llSSONS FOR US
J~sus al so gives another invitation
whkh no other ~Jerson could or can
giv e, "Come unto me, all ye that Ia·
bou r and are heavy ladrn, and 1 will
give you rest" (Matt. 11 :28). Die·
tators c.an threaten death, but Jesus
promises eternal life and rest, and He
has never failed to keep His promise.
Have you accepted the invi~tion of
Jesus Chn.!>t, or are you following in
the way o f the world ? Is your soul
satisfied and tilled with goodness? Do
you have the thoughts and ways of the
dying world, or have you bqun to
share God'~ thoughu, ways, joys,

place, but also a place which
aives power and authority.
The Lord says that the leV-
ten und\estk ks are seven
churches. We see in Revela-
tion I: 13 that He walks in the
nUdst of th~ seven "candle·
•ticks.
This is really \!.•hat the true
c,hurch should be: a bumin&
c:andkstick!
In the Old Testament there
w:u a lighted candlestick in
tbc tabernacle of the wilder-
ness. and later in tbc: temple
of Solomon.
How wonderful is this illus-
tratio n of the golden candle.
stic k for the great task o( [s-
rael to be a witoeK for the
living God on this etrth. With
gteat love and wisdom God
had chosen this sy mbol. We
read about this in Ex . 25:31-
32, 39·40 and we see that the
candlestick was made of pute
gold, with sl!n'n lamps, fill·
ed with o il , "that they may
give light."
There i~ no ca ndlestick in h-

guided f~rae\ to choose the
candlestick as the emblem of
the nation. The Lord can give

GOOD OLD F. R.
Some of our incumbent City Councilmen like to talk about
what they call "fiscal responsibility." Good old FR. Now, if
they're speaking English, my dictionary tells me they are dis-
cussing moral accountability when it comes to money matters,
While these fellows are patting themselves on the back about
their "fiscal responsibility," I would like to ask them a few
questions:
Is running out of money in the middle of the year, and then
squandering a $300,000 rainy-day fund by hiding it in the general
fund good FR? Who was mayor, who made the motion to do this,
and who voted for it ?
Is it good FR to kick long-time residents out of the Marina-
park mobile homes, thus giving up the $150,000 a year these
responsible citizens pay in rent to the city? Whose idea was
this? Is building tennis courts and parking spaces on the site
to draw more tourists good FR? Who is responsible for this?
When we sell our valuable dump-site property and use the
money to finance a new police station that the people said they
don't want, is that FR? Who did this, and why ? And who's lying
about it by saying it will just be a sub-station?
Who is quietly trying to get us to sell the Balboa Bay Club
property, which was given to the people of the · city in good faith
by Mr. James Irvine for the use of the GENERAL PUBLIC?
What kind of FR is that?
Is the constantly-rising tax bill paid by local property owners
to finance all of these schemes an example of FR?
Don't be fooled. They keep telling you they need to sell this
t o buy that. They say they can't lower the tax rate because of
the "demand" for more city services. Yet, they end up, sud-
denly, with an extra $1 million in a new rainy-day fund. If we
were so strapped for money, how did we find the extra $1 mil-
lion so quick? Good old FR, right?
I'll tell you what FR means, the way it's practiced by our
city government. It means FINANCIAL RECKLESSNESS. • • * •
If you want to practice some real fiscal responsibility with
your own money, check .our fair prices on quality hardware
goods down at the store. Stop and c~t awhile when you visit.
P. S. After 40 years,
government. Ah, sol
do you still want attorneys to run your
