Aa ''The Exordl;t"-both in book and movie form-
hM made the round.· ol American c:iti• numben of
tundamentalilt prnchen have bqun preMntly ser-
monJ, or even .erie. of a;ermons, on demoni.lm and
exordam. They are to be commended.
Every .erious-minded preacher or Bible teacher
who hu attempted to pl'e'peft such a ~Jtrmon, or ~eries
of aei'D'IOIW, hu already come to the same condusion
th.t we have. Then il f.,. too much material on
demonism for the aver~ conaregation to absorb in
one aitting, or that the averqe conent:ation is willinJ
to ait atiU long enouch to hear.
And, there is a a:reat deal more to be written on
demonWn that even the moet patient of our readers
eould be expeeied to dilest at one time. We will,
therefore, limit o\.ll"MIYI!S to one area of discuuion:
How do exorciaml and excorista -u portrayed in
Blatty'a novel and Friedkin's motion picture----contr-ut
with the Biblical aceounta ol Christ'• cutin&: out of
demon.a?
While we ahould be careful not to take anything
for cranted. we wiD aaawne for this diacuuion that
our reAders have made at least a cursory readin1 of
the section.a of the New Ta:tament dealinl with dvnon
~ion and reeliz.e that poueuion ia a Biblically
establiabed fact.
We will not spend a areat deal of time ddcUJa~ the
1ymptoma of demon pw;~n~ion. ·we will .. ume that
our readers are briefly familiar with them. We will u-
sume that our readers understand that any dabblinc
in demoniun and the occult-no matter how innocent
that dabbling m~~y appear-is atrictly forbidden by
scripture. Under the Mouic law that innocent dabblinc
wu considered an offence worthy of death. AC'Ceptinc,
then, these auwnptions, we move to exorcism itaelf.
There ia no fft'Ord in the acripturn of an actual
' n;o~. 'ftw-~-,t,....;\6).t..._.,dat,..ID::....-...
may have oceutftd. The ~ do teach that
demom. ha.ve been cut out of individuals that they
forme•ly possessed.
Tho: difference lies in a defi nition of termi.
Both secular ami reii&loUS diclionari.:s and encyclo-
~dlas agree in precept that exorciam involves i.he
~.---.·-·-
o:x pubion of e111il 5pirit.s by the U9e of a formula.
Webster says Lhat exorcism involvn cOQjuration or
adjuration, and it is imposa.ible to seyarate conjuration
from macic.
M~rriU F. Unger. in his brilliant work "Biblical
Demonology," aayJ that lhe "essential etymolocieal
meaninJ" of exorcism i& lh~ ~xpulsion of evU apirib
by "conjurations, incantation.a, or reiJ.a-ious or mq:ic:al
ceremonies." Exorcism ia the cutina: out of demooa
by th~ use of a formula or ceremony.
No place in Jcripture are-'M! told that Chrilit or HU
Apostlu depended upon a maaic formula or ceremony
to cut out defD(lnL
Exorcism, itaeU, iJ mentioned only one time in the
New Teatament. That reference ia in Acta lf:ll·ltl.
"And God wrought q~eCial miracW. by the hand~.
ol Paul:
''So that from hil body were bro\llht unto the tick handkerch.ie& or aprons., and the di ... MJI
departed from th~m. and the evil apirib went out
of them.
"Then cert.Jin of the vqabond Jr:wa e:xord.ltl,
took upon th~111 to call over them wh.i~ bad evil
Jpirita the name of the Lord Jesua, uyq, We
adjure you by J~sua whom Paul preac:heth.
"And there were .even 50nl of on~ Sceva. a Jew,
and chief of th.e priesu, which did .a:
''And the evil IJiirit an~wered and Mid, Jesua I

"And the r.nan in whom th~ ~vii spirit wu
leaped. on them, and overcanw them, and pNVailed
agailut them, .so that they fled out of that house
naked and wounded."
What does this singular \Ue in acripture of the word
exorc-iat tell ut? What do the eventa iUrroundin&: that
usage tell us?
We can draw several seU-~vident truths from lhe
passage:
e That Paul Willi c-aslin8 out demons by the author .
ity of Jesus Chr iSt whom he preached .
e That the se·.·en sons of Sceva attached a magical
or mystica l power-to the name J esus, i_tSelf, and tried
t.o US!e it as part of atr. e)tortistieal fite1.
• That 'the evi.l .-pirit waa •faJroHiar-with Christ and
recogni:red that i he name of Je5Us., •put from the
authority of Jesus, w8s of no effecl.
But equally important i1 the realization that the
sons of Sceva were. indeed. uorc::isu. The Bible
does not call them cobblers or tentmakers or tink~n.
The 5Criptures identify them as being men who cast

F".a,1 ZEKIEL was one of the r-greater prophets of the

word of the Lord came
expressly unto Ezekiel the priest, the
son of Buzi, in the tand of the (ha l-
deans by the ri ver Chebar; and the
hand of the Lord was there upon
him." This servant of the Lord was
a younger contemporary of the proph-
et Jeremiah whose influence ha s been
seen in the writings of Ezekiel. Here
it should be observed that Jeremiah
~rformed his ministry during the
~t year~ o f the hi story of Judah, but
Ezekiel executed hi s ministry during
the exile o f Judah in the land of
Babylon. Besides, the prophetic activ·
ity of Ezekiel extended over a pniod
of twenty·two years (593-571 B.C.).

KELLY-'S
VOTE BY D~ST-RICT
We're kidding ourselves,
We talk about a city made up of separate communities, Then, we elect all
our City Councilmen by citywide vote, .That way, the Councilman. doesn't have
to give a damn about the district he's supposed to represent, Doesn't even
have to win the votes in his own part of town, Ridiculous,
We talk about keeping people from buying elections, But, instead of electing
our Councilmen by districts, so that they can run a small low-budget campaign,
we force them to seek out 35,000 voters and bombard them with ads and letters,
U we ran by district only, each Councilman would have an average of about
5,000 voters to appeal to, We could lower the campaign spending limit to 5~
or · I~ per registered voter within districts, Anybody who is civic-minded
enough to want to run would be able to afford it, It Is hypocritical to talk about
keeping people from buying elections, while at the same time we force them
to run citywide, and the big-money interests end up buying the election for
the candidates that they want to win,
A Councilman should have a constituency and be responsible to that con·
stituency, Corona del Mar, the Peninsula, the Upper Bay--all of these neigh-
borhoods have their own Interests and problems, and should be properly repre-
sented at City Hall, I have people coming in the store every day complalning
that they have no representation at city hall, This is a sad state of affairs for
our city, They mention such things as the Lido and American Legion leases, the
tight controls placed on old-time property owners, They wonder why no action
is taken on these important matters, These are things that affect them per-
sonally, They need a voice at city halL So do the residents of other commun-
ities in town, Paul Ryckoff sticks up for Balboa Island pretty well, but most
of our neighborhoods have problems that are going unsolved, West Newport,
for example, needs a park and some beach_restrooms, . . _ _
And how can a Councilman spend $400,000 for a huge parking Jot on Balboa
Peninsula, then another $8,000 for a sign to tell people it's full, when it isn't
full? And in the next breath, the same Councilman says we've got to do some-
thing about traffic on the Peninsula,
Our Councilmen keep telling us we have professionals ruiUling the city, They
look awfully amateurish sometimes,
What runs this town is money, You've heard that "money talks," Well, here
it screams, Elections are won by simple arithmetic, The more money, the
bigger the campaign, and the bigger the campaign, the more votes you get,
A 5th grader who knows his math could run this town, All he would need is
a rich uncle -· or a couple of rich developers,
Let's stop kidding ourselves, Our town's character is changing, People are
looking out for their own Interests and their own little communities, We've
got to change with it, and a good way to start is to go to the system of voting
by districts,
Otherwise, the demagogues will continue to run things, They will talk about
how they "beat the freeway," The freeway was stopped by the state legisla-
ture, Freeways are state roads and, regardless of the vote of one little town
along the route, the state will build freeways where it wants to, The emotional
freeway issue in thls town keeps getting votes for the demagogues, They'll
still be running on the freeway in 1990, although they didn't have a darn thing
to do with killing it,
Let's change things, Let's get down to city hall and watch these Council
meetings and raise the devil untll our "leaders" listen to the people,
It would help if they elected Lucille Kuehn to be mayor, * • • •
You can do something about BEAUTIFYING your part of town, Stop by the
store and look at our great selection of Colony Paints and other home beauty
aids, AI Forgit
P, S, Wonder if the 26,000 who didn't vote wish they would have gone to the
polls and elected somebody who knows what a budget is? The Council is about
to spend $16,9 m111ion of YOUR money. And they're doing 1t without any ques·
tions asked,
