the Book of Daniel, it is
appropriate to obterve the
rcmarkt of a faithful schol-
ar and writer of the l:ut
century : Daniel is the prophet of
Me latter days. His book is the man-
ual of the faithful in times of trial
and trouble. He teaches men how to
read aright the history of the past and
tQ interpret the great events which ~rc
now passing before their eyes, and
prepares them for gr~tcr things to
come, even to the end of time. He
also instructs them, by precept and
example, how to live and move in the
midst of the active business of public
affairs, so as not to ~ distracted by
it; but to cherish an inner, hidden,
spiritual life, even in the thickest
crowds of this world ; and in its most
stirring strifes and struggles to pre-
~rve: calmness and quietness, and to
hold communion with the Unsetn; to
remain steadfast and unmoved amid
the shocks of political revolutions, and
to have the windows of the bean evtr
open to the far-off peace and glory of
the Jerusalem that . is above (Dan.
G:IOJ. and, while still sojourning as
exiles and captives upon earth, to have
their conversation in Heavtn ·(Phil.
3 :20 J. '' (d. Chas. Wordsworth, The
Book of Daniel, 1871, p. v.)
Moreover, the estimate of Daniel,
who was not only a statesman bur also
a prophet, has bttn well expressed by
:ln able expositor of the twentieth
century: "Daniel was a man greatly
beloved of God, and greatly admire<!
of men. His life is an epic of moral
c.:ourae;e, w'bich alone makes men
great. Daniel may be described a.s the
most infiutntial man of the: Old Test-
ament, for he haJ exerted more
practical influence upon readers of
the Bible, and especi.a.U)' upOn young
men, ,than aay other JSlble ma.aber,
'Nothing better could be recommended
to young men than a 1tudy of the
career of Da.niel ; and if his life and
character were studied and meditated
upon by thousands of young men, the
shores of time would be strewn with
fewer shipwrecks. The power of the
i~f1uence of Daniel was recognized by
h!s o_wn contemporary, the Prophet
Ezek1el. Through him judgment was
Jeclared upon Jerusalem, and as a
sign of the certainty of that jud&mt'nt
the Lord, through the prophet, says
that. even if three such men as Noah,
Dnmel, and Job lived in the land
their presence could not save it fro~
the impending doom [Ezek. 14:14,
20J . This amounts to saying that ii
the life and character and pre~nce
of any man could sa~ a city trom de-
lit ruction, Daniel's would."
Also, the same expositor writes :
"Some Old Testament character~.
,uch as David, teach us not only by
their vi rtues but by their fall . But
Daniel inspires us by his victories over
temptation. The cross sins whiC"h
stained the Jives of some of the great-
est men in the Old Testament are
Wtally wanting in the life of Daniel.
Like Samuel, Daniel is one of "the
aristocrats of the Old Testamc:nt a
thorougbbred in every rC:spect; on: of
those mt'n who, however born and
wherever stationed, bear unmistakable
marks of intellectual and moraJ dis-
tinction." ( cf. Clarence Edward
Macartney, "Daniel-The MOlt In-
fluential · Man of the Old Testament"
in s~rmoNS 0,. Old TuttJml111

The Resolution of Dante! in Babylon
Verses 8-16 of our Scriptural pas·
sage sets forth the loyalty of the four
hebrew youths to their faith in the
livina: and true-God. In 6delity to
Jewish law these young men refwed
to deflle thenuelves with the delicacies

the four thrived on a simple dit>t of

The Manifestotton of tftt Divine Favor
' to Oantel and His Friends
Verses 17-20 point to the divine
grace which was manifested to the
four young men in a strange la~d.
Here it should be observed that L>amel

Habylon as the Babylonians did. 'f?ei_r

God who showed His grac.ious favl)r.
"The secret of the Lord is with them
that iear him; and he will shew them
his covenant" (Psa. 25 :14 ). At the
end of the three years (Dan. I :5), the
fo ur youths were brought before the
king. Since tMse young men were
found to be the mOO proficient of all
whom Nebuchadneuar had direct~
to be educated, they were promotecl to
a position among his per10nal attend·
ants. So God blessed Daniel and his
three companions who were 1upc:rior
in every way to their contemporariu
in the royal court.

PRAYER
Dr . W. A. (Billy) Sunday said in a sermond o n prayer:
"I do not understand the me chanism of the telephone, but

know is that the sugar sweetens the coffe e, and that ts aU we

Thr;1r has never been a great moral or spintual awakening in
history that did not root itself in prayer. At Pentecost, where
the Holy Spirit came down and where the church wu born,
they held a ten--day prayer meetina.
' People are not praying today . Prayer is beainnina to be
looked upon as o ld-fashioned . The one thing that will save our
nation is a sweeping revival of religion.
God answers prllyt'r. Phillips Brooks said that prayer is not
overcomin& God's relu ctance, but a laying hold of His
willingness.
Abnham prayed for a son, and God pvc him a posterity

GREATEST
AND BIGGEST?
The Chicago Tribune modestly bills itself as the "world's greatest
newspaper." As you would expect of the world's greatest, the Tribune
holds the unofficial record for making the world's greatest mistake,
That was back in 1948 when, in their ecijtion the morning after the
Truman-Dewey presidential election, the Trib ran a big, black headline
saying Mr. Dewey had been elected president.
That record has stood for almost 26 years. Well, the world's greatest
wants to be sure nobody can outdo them on mistakes, so they've just
made another big one. Last Thursday, they ran an editorial asking
President Nixon to resign, If the Tribune is as close to the facts on
this one as they were in 1948, Senator Kennedy will probably resign.
Which wouldn't be a bad idea.
Now, the Los Angeles Times has never claimed to be the world's
greatest newspaper, just the biggest in the West. Friday morning, the
Times showed it can make the biggest mistake in the West by editorially
calling for the impeachment of our President. The Times owns the
Costa Mesa paper, s o it will be interesting t o see what the Pilot will do.
Some of the news people are mad at the President because he criti-
cizes them when they make mistakes. Kicking him when he's down
is one way of getting back at him.
Oh well, I'm sure they will be fair about this whole thing and insist
that transcripts of everything said at Chappaquiddick be made public,
too. Then, if any of Senator Kennedy's private conversations prove
embarrassing, I'm sure the greatest in the world and the biggest in
the West will insist that he quit, too,
Incidentally, did you notice that the House impeachment committee
immediately went into the closed-door "executive" session right after
they started their hearings last Thursday? Axe they going to tell the
public every word that was said in that and any future "closed-door"
meetings?
Maybe we should encourage people to imitate the Communists and
rat on their neighbors' private conversations. If you knew everything
that everybody said in privacy, I'll bet there would be a lot of exple-
tives deleted.
Maybe the President should offer a deal to quit if every other poli-
tician and publisher who has ever done anything wrong will quit, too.
And, if Senator Tunney and Mayor Bradley will tell us how they ran
up campaign expenses they couldn't pay for, You tell me your secrets,
and I'll tell you mine, fellows. We would probably end up with an awful
l ot of out-of-work politicos and publishers. • • * • •
We don't say anything down at the store, even in the back room, that • we're ashamed of. We're pretty proud of our language and our merchan·
dise, too. =;:: AL FORGIT
