Our Lord'1 atatemeat makes our duty in tim cottDO<tioa perfecdy plain. "Tbcn llith He unto them. Render therefore unto Caesar. . the thinp which are Ceasar's; and unto God tbe thiap that are Qod's." Cooceming tbis relatiODibip many siocere people are deeply concerned. In times of national evetua, auch as a general election or of national crisis u a war, tbey fmd themselves quite confused as to what they should do. They only want to do their duty aod stand for the right, but wbat their obligations may be under these cir- cumstances they are not at all sure. If they could only know for certain, the teaching of the Word of God on the subject, the matter with them would be immediately settled. The re are others, of coune, who are not even interested in the affairs of civil government for say they, "Our citizenship is in heaven. Therefore, we do not feel any responsibility whatever toward the governments of the world"; so by them responsibility in this relationship is altogether neglected and ignored.' I read of one per· son w6o remarked, ''They cannot blame me for failura in the gOYemment for I have not voted for 20 yean." Probabfy, be is to be blamed most of all. Oa one occuioo the inimitable C. H. Spurgeon was seen going to the pollia$ booth to vote, and on his way be wu met by a Christia.n brotber who did BOt believe in voting. In a tone of amazement he said, "Mr. Spurgeon, are you going to vote?" Mr. Spurgeon ~ed, "Indeed, I am ... ''But have you forgotten the teaching of the Bible which oommands us as O.ristians to crucify the old man :" Mr. Spurgeon answered, ''That is euctly what I am doing. You lmow my old man is a ~yed Liberal, and I am determined this time to make him vote Conservative." Accordinst to the teaching of Scripture, citizens of the heavenly king- dom have also an earthly citizenship to mainta1n. Has Divine providence by means of birth or immigration brought you to this , country? 1ben you have become a part of this great and favored nation. You have come to enter into the immense benefits provided by way of free- dom, protection and prosperity. Friends. we ought to fully enjoy them all for iil some countries of the world these liberties just do not CJ:ist. Do not say, therefore, that you have no responsibility whatever toward this country or to the attain of ita government. Daniel 3 :19-25 pretents the mira- culous delivernnee of Daniel's three friends, "TI1 e very men who cast them (Shadrach. ).leshach, and A.bed - IICIO] down were conaumed by the Rames. But when the King looktd toward the furnace, he. beheld to his great :\stonishment not three men hound and burning up, but four nlen loose and actually walking in the fire. 'They have no hurt and the form ,of the fourth is like the Son of .God' [verse 25]. And when they were brought up from the fiery furnace, no smell of fire was about them, not even a hair was singed, only the bands which had bound them were humed off. The fire had set them free, but it could not touch them. But did the King speak true when he ~held the fourth like the Son of God ? Little did he know what he said or whar it meant, but assuredly he saw in that fire the Son of God, Jehovah, for He had promised His people 'When thou walkest throu~rh the fir~ thou ~halt not be burnec1 ; neither shall the Rame kindlr on thee' [Isaiah 43 :2]. Th e word "Babylon" is sy nonymous with confus10n, and Satan 1:. its au tho r (l Cor. 14:33). It is, in one form or an'l!her. a d1abolical attempt to c?ntradict all that God says and to counteract all that He does. The Babylon matter tS comprehended .within thr~e deSIQ1'13tions: (1) Historical Babylon in Genesis II: (2) Ecclesiastical Babylon in Revelation 17: and (3) Politi- cal Babylon in Revelatic n 18. All three suffer defeat at the hands of Him who will not tolerate ungl)dly usurpation of H:s royal rijO!hts and divine prerogative. Historical "B" is syrr.bo!i zed by a monumental tower, Ecclesiastical "B" by a myst ical woman. and Political "B" bv a mighty city. Their aim, respectively, to reach heaven. to rob heaven, and to reject heaven. The proposal of the first was a common language; of the second, a common worship; and of the third, a common market-one speech, one church. one wo rld. The Uto pian dream, in each in~tance. may be expressed as (l) a cohesian of people, (2) a co~ minglin11 of churches, and (]) a coai 1tion of governments-to stay together, I'J worship together, to work together In the case of Histor•cal Babylon, God fells the tower, co'hfounds the tongues and scatters the people. · In the cas!" of Ecc lts•astical or 1-e li."ious Bab'I'IOn, the Beast (Ant ichrist) hates the "harlot.'' ou tlaws rel igion. and finally kilts the ''woman;" that is, de· strays the final d!"veloprnen t ol organ1zed religion. In the case of pol1t 1ca1 or economic Babylon, tr1als plague the earth, the econom~ crashes: and the great City 1s made desolate. Any theolog1cal evaluaUon of the problem orhomo- seaua.!Uy must at once deal with the matter of apostolic authority. On this issue Saint Paul, for example, ts quJte explicit. He makes three major points. a. Ttle practice of homosexuality excludes per- sons from the kin(dom of God (I Cor. 6 :10); b. Its ceneral practice in sodety gives evi- dence of turninc the truth of God Into a lie because It consists In defiance of God 's arrangement(Ro- mans 1 :24-27); c. Its general practi ce Is part of that dtvine judcment wbicb consists in turning men over to themselves for their own destruction (Romans I :24~27). 2. These apostolic statements can not be circumvent- ed by holding that moral and social values change in time and that. therefore, his judgments are no Ioncer valid or even applicable. For It was part of the apostolic call aad tuncuon to interpret ror the Church of all ages the nature or reality as it deals with the lordship of God over men not only in terms or redemption but also ln the area of cr eation. 3. Homosexuality, therefore, must be called.anddealt with by the Church tor wbat It really is; namely a v oss sin. In the case of another evtl, divorce , there was, tor a time, a mod1lytnc "word" t.n Judaism because of the hardness of men's hearts (cf. Kat. 11:3-1). Jesus, Ln turn, re~orlented the whole question. We bue no "H- cond word" 1n Scripture anywbere on the matter of bomosezuallty. Hardness or heart, wtth all tbat tt coo~ notes, Is oowhere indicated u an. atenuatt.nc circum~ stance. -4.
