These are the opening words of an editorial In the San Gabriel Valley Tri- bune, and the editor went on to relate how the German people turned to Hitler to restore the power and prestige of Germany after the ruinous run-away In- flation following World War I. • We are now approaching that run-away stage of Inflation here in the United States, and finally Americans in all walks of lUe are realizing that we are in deep trouble. The Gallup Poll makes it ofilclal by announcing that inflation is now con- sidered our No. 1 problem. There is a bright spot In this dismal picture, and that is that each of us can do something toward solving the crisis. The first step is sell discipline: Take the pledge not to go pleading for tax monies to finance some pet project. t.tilca' jota a PI'188UJ'e group to request ~-rut frOm the City Council, or from Sacramento, or from Washington. • Right here at home, the Ne~ort Harbor Chamber of Commerce can set a civic example by retracting Its request for a tax subsidy for its tourist bureau, The City Councils of Newport Beach and Costa Mesa can electrify communities through- out the nation by announcing that, In the public Interest and for national survival, no more 0 revenue sharing~' funds will be accepted from our nearly bankrupt U. S. treasury. Our Newport Mesa school board can set a similar standard of responsi- bility for trustees all over the nation by not requesting or accepting any more federal aid funds for local education programs. These suggestions are all aimed at the root cause of inflation: federal deficit spending. The classic definition of Infla- tion is "too much money chasing too few goods." Our national debt of almost a HALF TRILLION dollars means that about $500 billion in phony money has been pumped into our national economy by the printing press method. President Nixon, announcing a program to curb lnflatlon last week, acknowledged federal spend- ing to be the prime cause. Treasury Secretary William Simon put it this way: "We must curb federal spending, curb our deficits and move toward a ~ce In the government budget. It is federal spending that has gotten us Into this problem." And now back to you: It's your problem and my problem, and webothcandosome- tbing about it. Let's make our November Toting an anti-Inflation effort. Aa the San Gabriel Valley Tribune editorial ad- mooiahed: "Make sure that tbe men we Mild to Washington In November' a ballot- tlmc are close-ft.ted with tbe American doll•r.'' McMIInlls &/mont, MIUIIlchuum -After twenty-four yean of wranaJ.ing, 'the United Nitions hu fmally produced a deflt.ition of agpession. This means, of course, that sinoe its founding, the world organiption has been operatinz without any agreemeAt on precisely what it is that the U.N. is supposed to prevent -or, perhaps more accurately , what its supporters claim that it is designed to prevent . In 1952, the General Assembly set up a 1 5-member committee to formubte a defini-' tion, but it could reach no decision. A second committee, established in 1954, did not meet until 1956. Its attempts to define agression produced nothing. The General Assembly gave birth to a third committee in 1957. Incredibly, this group was charJed merely with the task of determinina when the Assembly should "contlder again the question of defining agg1ession." It met four times in the next ten years and reached no cMc:iaion. ..,. ,~ .. P •· • Perhaps• embarra..nem forced the U.N .'s hand, beciuae in 1967, 1 foU'rth group called the Committee on the Question of Def111ing Agression came into being. This passage appears the more wonderful when v•ewed 10 the light of its context . Verses 2·6 tell how we were afl&r once the "children of disobedi· ~nc~," and therefore "by nature the ch•ldren of wrath, even as others." But then we read those wonderful words of hope, "Bur God.'' "But God. who •s RICH IN MERCY. because of H•s GREAT LOVE wherewith He loved us ... " And the nexl vers~M. tell how He has. taken behevers m Chnst fr om the lowest po5111on of condem· nat•oo and wrath and g•ven them the h•ghest place of favor and blessmg m Chnst at H1s own nght hand 10 the heaven lies. The simplest, humblest be· liever 1n Chriu as His Sav1or has been given this position in the heavenlies, for God no longer sees him in himself, but in Christ, who died for his sins. This is why St . Paul so often writes about "those who are in Christ Jesus ." It is for the bel~ever now to occupy this exalted position, to appropriate by faith the "all sp•r- , •tual blessings" which are h.s m Christ (See Eph. 1:31 . like Paul, he may be lihed by grace, through bith, above the troubles and SOl· rows of "this present ev1l age .. and enjoy his position and bless· in9' in the heavenlies in Christ. And even this is not all, for look· ing: far 1head to the future , the apostle, by divine revelation, goes on to say On Eph . 2:71 that God hM done this all for us, "that m the ages to come He mi~t show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us th10ugh Christ Je-sus ." a L()()B aT Tile :SOO;K IY OR. 101 JOIIEI 8(11 oJI2I!D Un/nr.,tll IIIUIIIYIU.I. MORE POLICEMEN We need more policemen. One night during the 4th of July holiday weekend, there was a big brawl out behind the store. When I called the police, I learned that only 8 policemen were on patrol duty in the entire town, and there was just one man down at the station who could be spared. If that single police- man had wandered into the mess here, he would have been mobbed. Now, this is ridiculous. Here we are in a well-to-do city of about 60,000 people, and 120,000 at night. We throw around millions of dollars for parks and recreation programs of questionable value. Meanwhile, we don't have enough policemen to respond to a dangerous brawl. No wonder we've got problems. It takes 8 policemen just to cover the Peninsula. And, if you think things are quieter around here at night, you haven't beeh paying attention. I know there's a formula that you are supposed to have so many police- men for so many citizens in a town. Well, that may work for New York or Anaheim, but this is a resort town with special problems. Another thing we should do to attract more good police officers is pay them more. If the street sweepers in San Francisco can make $17,500 a year, I think it's disgraceful to pay our policemen the low salaries they get. No wonder we have such a turnover in men. We could save our- selves money in the long run by paying them better to begin with. Let's cut the park and recreation budget and use the savings to make our policemen the highest-paid_in the state,. Why haven't the police chief or city manager done something about this problem? When your ball team isn't playing right, you fire the head man. Maybe we should do the same, Incidentally, what do you think of the city putting in pay toilets to rip off money from the kids at Newport Pier? Does this finance the city manager's $3,000 raise? I've got a $1.10 refund coming from the city for all of the dimes I've "loaned" this week to kids who had· to go • • • • • • We've got plenty of help down at the store to take care of you and your hardware needs. Stop by for a chat. AI Forgit P. S. Whatever became of our noise law and litter law? Come dovm to Old Newport some morning at 5 o'clock and you'll see our new ctty dump. 't"--· .-a: AT ,.
