• IS THERE A F0RD IN OUR FUTURE?
President Gerald Ford stands In the
historic role of tremendous chatlenge
and opportunity en to help lead our great
nation along the path of security, sol-
. vency and morality.
He is the only "un·elected" president
of the United States •• that Is, not elect-
ed to either the position of vice-president
or president. As he himself said In his
acceptance speech, he can be his own
man. Since he is un·elected, he Is be·
holden to no political pressure group.
He Is In debt to no man --and to only
one woman, his wife . That was a nice,
homey touch In his speech to the nation.

Not so very long ago 'the people in this pi cture o pened the doors of the Bank of
Costa Mesa fo r the fi rst ti me. And they did it in the little tra iler you see beh ind th em.
Today, they have moved int o a brand new, $1,000,000 Headquarters Building . To
us, th at spell s out one word -success.
H owever, w hen we sat down and tried to ana lyze th e reaso ns for our momen tous
progress, we were stumped. How did this tremendous change take place
in such a short space of time?
We knew our. projected rate of growth had bee n greatl y exceeded, our earnings
were way ahead of anything we had hoped for, our employees were working at the
highes t level of performa nce and our Direc tors and Officers were
doing an o utstandi ng job. But these were not the reaso ns.

Fin all y, we hit upon the precise answer. Costa Mesa and the Bank of Cost• Mesa
are in love' The people in our communi ty love the way we do business •nd we
love doing business wi th you. Proof of this romance ca n be found in one simple
phrase ... anyone who has put up with the inconveniences caused by our
worki ng out of the trailer must be a devoted customer.
This sort of devotion deserves loving recogni tion. And our Headquarters Building
is ou r gift to the people of Costa Mesa who have been so patient.
Now, we cordially invite you all to inspect this remarkable new building, the
most modern banking facili ty available.
•
We wo uld like to express o ur gratitude to the men who designed, constructed
and decorated the new Bank of Costa Mesa : Robert Tho mas, A. I.A.,). Ray, Construc-
tion and Robert Morris, Interiors. Their com bi~ed talents have produced a structure
of which we all are very proud.
vye want you to look at the many conveniences they have provided for you.
24 teller stations, including 6 drive up teller wi ndo ws and 2 merchant stations.
Safety deposit boxes for your valuables, a separate area for our escrow department,
a loan department that insures privacy, a spacious new account desk and a 6 sta tion
deposit slip desk with built in calculato rs to assist in your transac tions.
Of course, everything in the building is brand new. Ev erything, that is, except the
people who se rve you and the services they have given you. We brought them wi th us .
Well , Costa Mesa, we have come a long way together. And we pl an to go fu rt her,
together, because we love the company we're keeping.

The Prophet's Vision
IIAIAnUIC l : 1-4, 1:1.:10
I~J HE Book of Habakkuk b lbe elahth of the Mill01 l'lophou
accordtnJ to the order of the
~nonieal books of the Old
Testament in the EnaUah
Bible. Habakkuk wu a loyal
spokesman for God i.n the southern
kingdom of Judah. This prophet, who
was a contemporary of the great
Jeremiah, executed hi~ ministry durin&
the reign of the evil kin& Jehoiakim
(608-597 B.C.). Also, in consideration of
the name of Habakkuk the prophet, it i5
interesting to note the explanalion of
Martin Luther (1483·1546), the great
leader of the Protestant Rd'mnarlon in
Germany, who hu written prefaces to
the books of the Bible: "Habakkuk has
the right name, for Habakkuk meazu, in
German, 'an embracer.' i.e., one who
embraces another and takes him in his
arm1. 'That is what he [Habakkuk) doa
in his prophecy; he embraces his people
and takes them in his arms; i.e., he
comforts them and holds them up, as
one embraces a poor, weeping child, so
that it may be quiet and satisfied,
becaux thinp will go better, if God
wills." Thus Habakkuk is remembered u
a prophet of comfort and
encouragement to the people of God in
a time of apostasy, strife, and violence.
Moreover, it is appropriate to observe
the aim of the prophet Habakkuk: "The
purpose of Habakkuk's prophecy is to
vindicate the righteousness of Jehovah in
His government of the world, and
thereby to offer comfort to the faithful
Israelite in the impending time of
distress. The problem of the divine
toleration of evil could not but press
hardly upon the prophet and his godJy
c ontemporaries , when they
contemplated the social and religious
corruption around them; and the
solulion that judgment was speedily to
be executed upon the JUilty natJon ' seemed to involve a still worse
perplexity, If the execudonen of the
divine sentence were to bi" mon1tert of
pride and violence. In spite of
appearances, however. he [Habakkuk)
can still appeal to the character of
Jehovah (1 : llsq.). and he b taUJ,ht to
undentand that the eternallawt of riJht
and wrong are still in force; that the
airogance of the Chaldaeans has in it the
germ of ruin, while the c:onstanc:y of the
just is a principle of life (2 :4). And the
sublime poem of chapter 3, appealing to
the imagination as weU as the reason,
assures the faithful heart that God wiU
manifest His sovereignty in the futu~
no less victorioUJJy than in the past"
(cf. Alex.ander Francis Kirkpatrick
"Habakkuk" in Smith's Dicii011ary oi
lhe Bible. 2nd ed., 1893, pp. 1257,
125 8).
The outline of the present Jesson,
which is entitled "The Prophet's
Vision." is as follows:
I . The Answer of the Lord to the
17ophel (Hab. 2ol4)
2. The Woe Against Violence (Hab.
2ol2·14),
3. The Woe Against lnhumanity (Hab.
2ol5·17)
4 . The Woe Against Idolatry (Hab.
2:18·20)
THE ANSWER OF THE LORD 10
THE PROPHET
After the first chapter of Habakkuk
has been read, we see that the prophet
is troubled in view of the inscrutable
dealings of the lord with His people. In
the midst of great distrea and
perplexity, the man of God prepares to
hear the divine message of comfort. It
has been suggested that the languap of
verse I o f our passage is figurative . Here
the comments of a modem Biblical
scholar should be noted: "It is ICitc:ely
likely. though pouible, that the prophet
had some elevated place to which he
retired to await a prophetic: villon. But

CHAR.ACTER BUILDING OR CHRIST BUILDING
"THE EVANGEL," Box 25, Largo, Fla.
We hear so muc:h today on the subject of Character BuildinR; the plans of
preachers and educators to mold, fash•on and build up splend•d character in
t~e a:row ing bo_y and girl. 1 am a finn believer in character building, the right

pro hibit the sale of filthy, obscene literature which can be purchased at the
average newsland today, a great forward step would be taken In keeping the minds
and hearts of our boy,; and girls clean. "As a man thinketh so is he." One
glance at the average newstand Is sufficient to prove my point. Sex stories and
magazines with l'liihly suuestive themes and ptctures seem to predominate. If
the youth of America fills heart and mind wtth this garbage, woe betide the
mothers and fathers of to-morrow. There are many books which can be read with
wholesome enjoyment and profit to both mind and body. The Bible is the Book of
books.
Character building of the right sort is splendid, but it never should replace the
sospel. When we hear of churches stressing character building and lit11e or noth·
1ng said of the Christ who alone can build character that will stand the test of
time and eternity, we become fearful. The faith of our fathers produced some
mighty giants, some great characters. Their character had been built up, molded.

living Word of God. Behold! the fearless, faithful Daniel of old. Note the manhood the character of Joseph, wl'lo withstood the wiles of Potiphar's wife. What th ink ye

My 11econd question is: Is it

ANSWER: No one is saved
because he walk.a down the aisle
in response to a public in,..itation
or ··altar call." One is saved
when he believes on the Lord
Jeaus Christ.
Salvation is a gift . To be
saved, one must accept the ll'ift of
salvation that God ll'ives through
His Son Jea1..1s Christ. John 1:12
aays.
"But m many as re~it·ed him,
to them tave he> power to become
the children of God, even to
them that belietJeon his name."
You will notice that ··as many
as rl'ceillf!" Jesus, even those
who "believt> on his name" were
sa ved. Salvation is a gift.
Notice cardully the words of
John 3:16,
"For God 110 loved the world,
that he IOU#' his only begotten
Son, that whosoever believeth in
him should not periiJh. but have
everlasting life."
God "gave" HiaSon. We are to
receive the Lord Jesus.
Romans 6:23 also reminds us
that talvation through Jeaus
Christ is a gift: "For the wases of
sin U death. but the sift of God is
eternal life throUIJh Je•us Christ.
o1..1r Lord."
Ephesians 2:8.9 repeats that
salvation it the "gift'. of God.
•·For by 1raec! are ye saved
throUilh faith; and that not of
yourselves: it is the silt of God:
Not of works. lest any man
should boast.··
One 111 saved, then. by
believing in Je~~us Christ or
receiving the Lord Jesus C hriat.
It is a matter of trusting Christ
to &ave and forgive and to take us
to Heaven.

For instance, the real estate promoters, who have already made a
bad name for themselves down here, have invaded that beautiful green
country. It's the old story. They come in and offer big money for a
home. Some guy who has 8 or 10 thousand in a place keeps getting bigger
and bigger offers until he gets one he can't refuse --something like
$40,000, He sells. Then, the tax assessor moves in and says, "Well now,
homes in this neighborhood are selling for $40,000, so we'd better
raise the assessed valuations around here." The politicians are happy
with this, of course, because it gives them more money to play with.
Next, the old-timers in the neighborhood get a huge tax bill. They
decide they can't really afford to live in a $40,000 or $50,000 home,
so they cave in to the promoters and sell out. Condominiums, K-Marts
and apartments are next, of course. What happens to the young couple
that wants to buy a home?
Oregonians got ahead of us in protecting their beaches from these
vultures, but I don't know if they'll be able to handle this invasion or
not. The invaders bring money, and a lot of it ends up in the hands
of politicians who make the rules of the game.
One thing I saw did impress me with the intestinal fortitude of Oregon-
ians. When some local politicos voted to double their salary, a furniture
salesman decided to buck the whole crowd. He went out and, in 20 days,
got signatures from about 3/4 of the registered voters to kick the ras-
cals out unless they backed off. They got the message and reduced their
salaries .
Why don't we do this? We should either stand up to these free-spending
clowns, or put our tails between our legs and sneak away.

We've got the message on inflation. Down at the store, we are trying
to hold the line on prices, without sacrificing the high quality our cus-
tomers are used to • Al Forgit
P . S. We know the City Hall crowd will come up with a great sign
ordinance. After all, they are the ones who built an $8,000 sign to hang
over Balboa Blvd. to tell tourists when the parking lots are full. The
sign has been turned on 2 or 3 times during the year it's been up. Very
good use of the taxpayers~
