I am talking about the conservatives' hopes for a conservative admlnlslratlon upon the Inauguration of Gerald Ford as presi- dent. The high hopes were quickly dampened when the new president pledged to con- tinue the Nixon foreign policy, which ts a policy of detente --gradual surrender to a relentless enemy who has given repeated and conclusive proof of perfidy and broken promises. Another blow was the retention of Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, promoter of detente; archi- tect of the disastrous wheat give-away to Communist Russia at the expense of sharply rising food costs here at home; schemer for the surrender of the Panama Canal, which ts the key to the defense of our hemisphere against the communists. Another shocker came announcement that President with the Ford has turned his back on anti-communist Rho- desia in favor of communist Russia, just as President Nixon had turned against anti-communist Taiwan 1n favor of blood-red communist Cldna. President Ford now favors repeal of the Byrd amendment, which allows Importation of chrome from Rhodesia, despite United Nations sanctions, so long as the U. S. imports the strategic metal from any communist country. Defeat of the Byrd amendment would put us again at the mercy of our deadly enemy, communist Russia, for supplies of chrome, vitally needed in armament production. The crowning blow came last week -- President F·ord's choice of ultra-liberal Nelson Rockefeller to be vice-president. Someone has said that the word given to President Ford was "Nels or else." And Nels it Is --architect of financial disaster for the state of New York, where he helped raise the annual budget from $1.9 billion in 1959 to nearly $9 bllllon In fiscal 1974, multiplying the tax burden about 5 Urnes during his tenure as governor. That ts a fateful choice to be made by our new president, who assumed his new duties calling In- flation our No. 1 enemy and promising to fight inflation by cutting the awesome federal deficit spending. The fiscal fiasco should have been reason enough to bypass Mr. Rocke- feller for vice-presidency. And ·there Is yet another black mark that should have eliminated him from consideration hts official action as governor to promote abortion, the murder of unborn babies, by vetoing a New York law that would have placed some curbs on thte cold-blooded kUling of the lnno- cente. Aod this man could be our next president! That Indeed appears to be the game plan. n had been strongly rumored at the time of the Agnew reslgnattoo -- the ~stbllity of naming Nelson Rocke- feller u Ylce-prestdent, then the a~Wter ot Nt.zon u prellldent to put Nels at the lap. ANb BANKAMERICARO ON ANY PURCHASE: • Oh boy! Old Silent John Store, our City Councilman from Corona del Mar, who thinks things were too quiet around town on the 4th of July, should have been 1n Central Newport the past 10 days. We had enough noise and excitement to last clean through the nation's bicen- tennial celebration. We got through the 4th okay, and we've got a Labor Day weekend coming up, but these last few days were something else. First, 2 men drove through a plate glass window at 23rd and Balboa, and fought with police who rushed to the scene. Then, a motorcycle rider who just couldn't wait to get a piece of pie ran through the front window of the House of Pies. To put the frosting on the cake (or the pie), a guy ran his car through a wall 1n the same place. Then, some guy who hates palm trees tried to knock one of my trees down with his car. Then, a pilgrim parted a local bartender's hair with a beer bottle and sent the poor guy to Hoag. If old Silent John would come down to Central Newport some night after 9, I'll show him where the fireworks are. Now, the point of this whole thing is that we need to leave the parking meters 1n operation until midnight, add 2 patrol cars in the area, and make about 15 drunk driving arrests every night. Heck, we don't need fireworks to attract more of these inebriated idiots from the desertlands. The ones already paying us a visit cause enough fireworks. While old Silent John is down here, we could tour the Planning Com- mission Follies area, where all of those restaurants without enough off- street parking are crowding everybody out. Oh, well, we can always ask the state taxpayers to buf us another parking lot for our commer- cial needs. • • • • • When you stop by the store to fondle our American made, quality hardware, we'll show you what we're talking about just outside the door. Al Forglt P. S. I hear a big shot has scuttled the University Drive 11nkup. Is it the same guy who builds houses under air traffic patternB and screams when planes fly over HIS house?
