ARVO E. HWA. _.,""' ..,1112-of .. EHIIII •ooooo••••••••••-*•••• • PARABLE OF THE FREE LUNCH
Once upon a time In the ldngdom of
Wundergelt there was a royal monarch
searching for the wisest wiseperson In
all the realm to serve as court advisor,
So he had his wish heralded throughout
the land, and many came to seek the
coveted appointment, To each applicant,
the king of Wundergelt posed a single
problem: "Tell me a statement that is
absolutely and eternally true," Many tried,
and failed. Finally the wisest of them all
came up with this unquestioned truth:
"There is no such thing as a free meal."
This Is a parable that needs repeating,
and particularly so at this time, The
inspiration for this statement of the truth
comes from a news release received
last week from the Newport Mesa school
district, announcing the avallability of
"free or reduced price school bmches,''
The words of the royal monarch's
wiseperson should be revealed to the
Newport Mesa school admtntetration, also
to the parents, and certa1Dly to the
students, There are no free meals, The
Ensign re-write of the school dletrict's
news release made the correct ideDtUlca-
tlon~ "tax-subsidized school luac:bes."
The students and pueate enjoy!Dc tide
subeidy should be told that that's jut
what it is --a subsidy, paid for bj you
and me In our taz bW, Tide Ia a
particularly pa.intul subject for me tide
week, because juet two daya 110 1 ..t
In my check to the couaty taz colleetor
for my 1974 Wl88cured property tun,
Of the exorbitant total, Sl-1/2 per cent
went for educatioo, Including th~ "free"
meals.
The news release from the school
district office did acknowledge a touch
of shame in this offer of taz-subsidized
lunches. While encouraging all who are
eligible to get In on the hand-out, the
school administration gave the assurance
that the information about· the applica-
tions would be kept confidential --out
of view of the critical eyes of those
paying the bill.
The fallacy of the "free meal" doctrine
is the fatal allure of the weUare state,
which is dragging down a once proud
peop le toward the eventual doom of
socialism.
Publicizing the names of the recipients
of all tax subeidies would help dispell
the fallacy. Better yet would be a sound
course in economics, sub-titled, "There
is no such thing as a free meal."
• • • • THE BAY KNOLLS ANNEX
There's been a lot of gnashing of
teeth among Costa Mesa city offictala
..over the Bay Knolls annexation In the
West Upper Bay's county corridor, And
there's been a lot of heated talk about
spheres of influence and broken prom-
ises on the part of Newport Beach
officials,

A. In a real sense the unbeliever'!\
aoul is !!pi ritually dead. He is not
~sponsive to God. The Bible de·
c\ares. "The soul that sinneth. it
shall die." Unless that person allows
the Spirit of God to work in his
heart. there wilt never be ll!ltJiritua1
life. Physical death does not change
the condition of the soul. This onl y
takes place t hrough an individual'!!

0 'litO"" ''1CIWG'S IUSIWISS.''LA ll'lltADA
ur lord prophesi ed, "Many
false prophets shall rise . and shal l
deceive many." Within our own day.
how many false prophets have ri s·
en ; and oh, how many are deceived!
Paul predicted. "I know this. that
after my departing shal l grievous
wolves enter in among you, not
sparing the flock . Also of your own
selves shall men arise. speaking
perverse th ings to draw .~way disci -
ples after them . TherefcH e watch."
My own observation rs that these
"grievous wolves," alone and in
packs, are not spa ring even the
most favored flocks. Undershep·
herds. in these "perilous times,"
will do well to note the Apostle's
warning, "Take heed therefore unto
yourselves and to all the flock over
which the Holy Ghost hath made
you overseers." It is as important
in these days as in Paul's-in fa"ct ,
it is increasingly important-to ex·
pose the many types of false teach ·
ing. that on every hand. abound
more and more.
We are called upon to contend
earnestly for the Faith once for all
delivered to the saints." while we
hold the truth in love. The Faith
means the whole body of revealed
truth, and to contend for ALL of
God's truth, necessitates some neg·
ative teaching. The choice is not
a.tt with us.
Every system of teaching can be
Judged by what it sets forth as to
these fundamental truths of the
Faith. "What think ye of Christ?"
is still the true test of every creed.
The Chr ist of the Bible is not set
forth in a ny false ism. Each of the
cults has its hideous caricature of
our lovely lord.
Let us who have been redeemed
at the cost of His precious blood.
be "good soldiers of Jesus Christ."
As the battle against the forces of
evil waxes ever more hot, we have
need for God ·given valor. There is
constant temptation to compromise.
"let us go forth therefore unto Him
without the camp, bearing His re·
preach.'' It is always right to stand
firmly for what God has revealed
concerning His blessed Son's per·
son and work. The "father of lies "
deals in half·truths, and specializes
in most subtle fallacies concerning
the lord Jesus. our sole and su ffi.
cient Saviour.
Error is like leaven, of which we
read. "A LITTLE leaven leaveneth
the whole lump," Truth mixed with
error is equivalent to all error, ex·
cept that it is more innocent.look·
ing, and therefore more danger·
ous. God hates such a mixture!
Any error. or any truth·and-error
mixture, calls for definite exposure
and repudiation. To condone such
is to be unfaithful to God and His
Word, and t1"8acherous to imperiled
souls for whom Christ died.
This does not imply harsh treat·

WHEN WE LOOK at God's plana for the future
of the world we see how completely He baa
provided for every division of mankind. Ofte.n we
consider the two divisions of Church and Jew, yet
the nations of the world at the juncture of the ages
are also important in the study of prophecy, Not
least, are we concerned with their judgment.
When Jesus was on earth, He explained that
He was to be the Judge of all men. When speakinl"
to the Jews, He said of Himself: God "hath given
him authority to execute judgment also, because
he ia the Son or man" (John 5 :27). Aa the Judge,
"he shall reward every man according to his
works" (Matt. 16 :27).
Refenin&' to one particular judrrnent, our Lord
declared: '"When the Son of man shall come in
his &'lory, and all the holy angela with him, then
shall he sit upon the throne of his glory" (Matt.
25:31). Here He will tit with ali the majesty that
ri&'htly belonp to Him.
The time when this takes· place is detenntned u
His Second Advent. This 18 when He will return
"with power and ,...t &'lory" (Matt. 24 :8). God
apeaka of the oce&Bion aa that time when "I shall
brinr .,-ain the captivity of Judah and Jeruaalem"
(Joel 8:1).
The I~ will be pthered to their land at
Chrfat"a Second Advent. This judgment will take
place then, The lonl'-awaited kln&'dom of God on
earth will be about to ~n and this event ie an
.....,tial preparation ror it. The hour wlll then
have arrived for Him to pronounce verdiets that
will decide the destiny of millions of people who
are on earth at that time.
Joel Utll! Ul that the location for thi1 ju~ent
1uut been fixed. Unlike other judJ11110Dto, It will
not take pl~ in Heaven but on eerth. Joel says
it will be In "the valley of Johoohaphat"" (Joel

mention of the dead, for it is the living who are
judtred.
At that time, Jesus will make a pennanent aep-
aration between two aroups, "He shall separate
them one from another, u a shepherd divideth his
sheep from the goats : And he shall set the sheep
on his ril'ht hand, but. the goata on the left." (Matt.
25:82, 33). Beinl' placed on the iia-ht is emblematic
of honor and privilege, so being put on the left
is indicative of dishonor and punishment.
This separation reminds us of an ancient eus--
tom in the East which we do not follow in the
West. Here we have separate ~ocks of l'a&ta and
sheep. There, goats and sheep were mixed t()l'ether
in one crowd and one shepherd would look after
both.
The Kinl' uks no questions of anyone present.
Judament doe8 not depend on what either sheep or

fect and full knowledge of the Jud&'e.

DIVISION Of EXECUTIVE DISTRlBUTOttS
A COVER UP
Let's put the blame squarely where It belongs .
City Hall had a golden opportunity to cut our tax rate here In Newport.
They discovered they were getting almost half a million bucks they hadn't
counted on . They had already adopted a budget for the next year, so the
common sense thing to do was cut the property tax rate by 3~ so that
local homeowners wouldn't feel the complete bite of a 17 per cent assess-
ment Increase.
Instead, they cut the rate a paltry 2~ and blew the rest on some pet
projects presented by their administrators.
Don't kid yourseU. The administrators determine your tax rate. They
come up with wild tennis coort schemes, land deals and big buildings,
then brainwash the Cfty Council Into going along with their grandiose
plans. And the Council Is too spineless t o buck the trend,
What can we do about this? One s olution would be to require voter
approval of all big-spending schemes. Otherwise, the old-timers, who
built this town Into the kind of place everybody wants to live In, are
going to be taxed out of their homes.
Meanwhile, the policemen, who need more money so that they can work
overtime when they're most needed at nights and on weekends, have to get
by on less money so that the tennis c ourts and land rteals can go through.
This Is screwy.
There are policemen who are willing to work overtime, but the City
Manager and Pollee Chief won't pay them the time-and-a-half the federal
law requires.
U more pollee protection and simple human health needs aren't provided
soon for our beach areas and older parts of town, we're going to face an
investigation by the county health people someday.
When the City Hall wizards sold our old city dump property, I guess
they decided Old Newport would become the new city dump.
Tell your Councilman you want to help decide when your money Is
going to be spent, foolishly, in big chunks. Tell him you would !Ike to see
the people get control of their City Hall, rather than having the City hall
pencil-pushers controlling the people.
Demand s ome action on pollee protection, NOW. And, for goodness
s ake, elect some businessmen who kn ow what a dollar Is.
• • * • * •
You'll get fast action when you come Into our store. We've got ex-
perienced, courteous clerks who know the hardware business. They'll
work for you while they're working for me. And they know the· value of
your hard-earned dollar, too.
Al Forglt
P.S. U the Democrats win the next election, after the way they killed
no-fault Insurance and killed our chance to elect our own County Super-
visor, then the people have no squawk coming. They'll be getting what
they deserve. ?=
