There were a lot of tearful post mortem
comments last week In City Hall about
Newport's costly venture In subsidizing
the Harbor Hopper city bus line. There
was even some talk of resurrecting the

disastrous losses suffered this summer.
There was not a single mention of the
basic Issue: What right has the City

Is: none, whatsoever. Our City Council

AFTER THE MILLENNIUM-WHAT?
Q. What wtll occur after the Mi l·
lennium is over?
A. At the d ose of the thousand
.,.;-. Christ will surrender the
Kn15dom back to the F'at~er in ac·
cordance w1th I Corinthians 15:24·
28. However. before doing so. it
will be necessary fo r Him to purify
the earth once again. During the
Millenni um . children will be born
mto the world and it will be just
as necessary for them to be born
again as for children in any age
to recetve the new birth. That chil·
dren will be" born into the wor ld
dur1ng the re ign of Christ on earth
1s made clear from the 11th chap·
ter of Isaiah.' verse 8 : ''And the
suckmg child shall play on the hole
of the asp. and the weaned ch1ld
shall put his hand on the coca·
trice's den." Many children of this
age are Gospel-hardened. and many
children 1n that day wi ll take a simi-
la r atti t ude tow<ird the things of
God. They, however, will render
fe1gned obedtence to t he King. the
Lord Jesus Christ. ,and submit to
His rul e. s1mply becausr they must.
Satan IS loosed from hiS prison

the dev1! that dece1ved them" wdl
then be "cast 1nto the la ke of f~re

the fa lse prophet are" (Rev. 20:

me nt of thl;! Great White Throne,
after wh1ch th e earth wdt be puri·
tied. and "a new heaven and a new
earth" wi lt appear: ''for the first
heaven and the first earth" will
have passed away. There will be no
more sea. And after the earth has
been purified and made new, the
lord Jesus shall hand it back to
the Father. and the Trinitarian God
shall be all in alt. whom we as His
redeemed ones will worship and

the marvelous grace of ·God that
sent His Son to die for our redemp.

• Q . "Why do leachers nol encour~
ase feaslins and prayer a.s Jesus
did in Mark 9:29?''
A. As to this specific pas.sage, you
will note in rhe margins of many
Bibles that most ancient manu~
scripts omit t.-te words "and fast -·
ing." This does not mean, however,
that there are not pfaces whMe

MORE THAN ONE DEVIL?
Q. I know there, is onty oi'le cte¥;1
and that his servants, the evif sp1r·
its. are called ·"demons," not cor·
rectly "devils" as translated in the
Authorized Version. Yet I am puz·
zled at the Lord's calling J udas "a
devil" in John 6:70. Should that too
be "demon"?
A. This is a most 1nteresting ques-
tion . You are right that there is but
one dev1l. The word in Greek is
diabo!Os, wh1ch means accuser.
slanderer, etc. and this . word is
used only of Satan except in this
one instance you have quoted. The
word IS diabolos which Judas
earned for being completely sold
o ut to Satan. Jesus was not imply·
ing that there was another Satan
but here was one person who was
his true servant. It was a fearful
title for Jesus to give to a human
being. He did not call the Pharisees
who hated him "devils" but said of
them that they were of "their fa ·
ther. the devil." There was some·
thing more than ordinary sin in
Judas' act of betrayal of the Son
of God . Jesus prayed for those who
were crucifying Him . "Father. fo r·
give them for they know not what
they do." But Judas was complete-
ly cold·blooded in his transgress:on.
We read 1n Acts I :25 that ·'Judas
by transgression fell . that he might
go to his own place." And his pla ce
was the place of eternal punish·
men! for Jesus Himself in John
17:12 calls him "the son of perdl·
t1on .. Paul could not forgive him-
self because he persec:...ted the
church of God . but God forgave him
when he saw the Sav1our on the
road to Damascus and surrendered
to Him , "Lord. what wilt thou have
me to do?'' Judas sinned in the
face of blazing light. He was with
the Son of God day and n1ght : He
saw Hi s love expressed in a thou-
sand ways: He saw how He forgave
the blackest sinners. He knew the
way of salvatio n and yet ''betrayed
the innocent blood" as he said of
himself. He was wholly m Satan's
employ: "The devi l now having put
it into the heart of Judas lscariot
to betray him" (John 13 :2).

Luke 17:32
In the ci!SC of Lot and his f11mil y the sad story in our Scripture reading might
well be entitled, "The Sorry Results or Final Outcome or Compromi se." By the time Lot's atll"mpt to compromive be tween God and I he world hod run its couue,
he had IO'It all his property, his wifl". his in -l:lw~. his daughtPrs' vi rtue, and his own peace of sou l. But the entire story is told fo r ua. in tht! Book of Berinninrs. in order that we may 11100 how itollst.utt.-d, and 110 that wo will hOC'd Jesus' admonition

A person would think l.hat any one who had had 118 close n brush with death aa

So we find at lealll three in!lb.nces of persistence In ''playing with ftre" on the
part of Lot and his family even after they had bee-n literally anatched out of the

THIS IS
A CONSERVATIVE?
We have this ex-hardware clerk named Bob Badham, who keeps telling
everybody what a great conservative he Is. How he's against government
subsidies and big welfare. How he tries to save the taxpayers' money.
That's what he says. Now, let's look at his record.
A few months back, he sponsored a bill that would have practically
given away the land that state taxpayers bought in Newport for the Pacific
Coast freeway right of way. He wanted it sold for what it cost 10 years
ago. Really looking out for the taxpayers' money, right? Of course, a
few people in his district would have benefitted by the giveaway, but
it would have been at the expense of taxpayers statewide. In effect, state
taxpayers would .have bought him a few pork barrel votes.
Last week, he helped get a bill through the legislature that will have the
state subsidizing the city of Newport and other beach towns. I guess we
need that money to maintain all of the public toilets we don't have on the
beaches, and all of the dressing rooms and shower facilities that have
never been built.
What a laugh. Anybody who thinks this city needs a subsidy because
of what it does for the public is just plain nuts. The law says the income
from tidelands will go back into the tidelands. Where does the $150,000
yearly rental on the Marinapark mobilehome park go? What happens to
the money from the Balboa Bay Club? Where does the money go that Is
collected from those expensive parking meters along the coastal streets?
Tidelands users feed those meters.
Haw much extra money does the city get In sales tax and property
tax that it wouldn't get If it wasn't a beach town?
U the city feels it can't afford the beaches, it should turn them over
to the state. That's what we are going to have to do eventually, anyway,
If we keep begging for state subsidies, and Mr. Badham keeps getting
them for us. Or hasn't he heard about the strings attached to such "give-
away~" of taxpayer money?
Now that we are going to get all of this "free" money, will we widen
the rest of Seashore Drive? Will we provide toilets and other amenities
fCII' the public? Will our city make some public use of the 32nd St. beach-
front street-end? Don't hold your breath. Did Mr. Badham have anything
to do with that Hoag hospital parking lot fiasco? ' When are you going to dip into that greasy old pork barrel again, Mr,
Badham? • • • • • •
Down at the store, we don't have any pork barrels, but we DO have
.arne tee chests to keep your ham sandwiches in, so they don't get so
1reasy.
Al Forgtt
P ,S. is there a real fire, or just smoke, to the rumor that one of our
lltate senators has a flnanctal interest in a development company that
