• ANSWERING GERALD FORD'S PLEA
Deu Preatdent Ford,
In rellpoll8e to your requellt for tnflatton-
fighttng ~~~~ggelltloos from tbe public, I uri
hBppy to offer you these tcleu:
First of all, Mr. President, you are
going to need plenty of cburage to take
the necessary steps to halt the inflation
that is threatening to destroy our nation.
You had the courage to take the lumps
wheh you played center on ·the Michigan
teams of 40 years ago, so you should be
able to face the slings and arrows of
political wrath when youdisregardspecW
interests and act for the good of us all.
Use your persuulve power as president
to call for a return to fiscal sanity in
legislation dealing with federal spending.
Use your veto power as president to cut
back the spending that has created the
awesome national debt now approaching
a half trillion dollars. Tbls ts going to
take courage, because there will be loud
outcries from special interest groups.
But you will have to put the nation's
survival above political considerations.
The temporary hardships that will be
caused by budget cutting will be as nothing
compared to the disaster that ts sure to
come If the spending madness continues.
Election time ts coming next month.
Use your influence and prestige as head
of our nation to urge voting cittzeos in
all atates to reject the. big spender a and
to elect candidates who are pledged to
stop the deficit spending.
Help get our nation back on a sound
fiscal program of balanced budgets. There
is no other way to stop inflation or to
avert national bankruptcy.

ANGELS IN BLUE
The long, hot summer is over, and most of us In Newport are happy
about that. It was another rough summer In Old Newport, but there are
some lovely young ladies who made things a lot easier. I'm talking about
our meter maids, bless their hearts. They kept smiling while they were
going about the hot, tough job of keeping our parking squared away.
One customer told me, "It's even a pleasure to get a ticket from one of
those girls --she smiles, tells you when the surf will be up, chats about
the latest gossip around town, and gives tips on how to avoid those $10
parking tickets."
Aild, with all of the tickets the girls have to write, I'll bet they're
the only city employees who are more than paying their own way. They're
sure worth a lot more than they're getting paid. I say let's put the girls
in charge of the whole town, and let their bosses pound the pavement
for a change.
And while the City Attorney is writing all of those new laws, how about
a city ordinance to handle the filthy-mouthed punks that sass our meter
maids. Each of those punks should get a blue shirt with "PD" on the
back, and be . given a pointed stick s o he can dive-bomb the garbage on
the beach. They're the ones who make the mess, anyway.
Before next summer, I hope the City Manager will decide to let the
meter girls wear some shoes that are more comfortable out there on
tl!ose hot sidewalks. If he doesn't, I guess I'll just have to keep my
bucket of ice water ready, so they can soak their feet every time they
pass by here.
So, here's to Ginger Black, Dian Griggs, Diane Sackett and Cheryl
Wilcox, the prettiest cops in this or any other town. They were like a
cool, fresh breeze blowing away the miseries of summer,

We keep a few extra buckets on hand down at the store In case you
need something to soak your feet ln. You might find something else on
our shelves that you need, too.

P.S. For vice-president, I guess Congress wants a hobo--a guy who
has never done anything or earned anything. He couldn't have a conflict
of Interest, because he has no interests. Never been a failure because
he never tried anything. A successful man nowadays is just a target for
ridicule or jail .
