(Cootloued from .... I)
Perhaps our planning commlsslooers
can answer some of, these questions. The
time Is tonight --Dec. 5 --at 7 p.m.
in the Council Chambers. They'll he
holding . a hearing on the prcposed new
sign law. They should he greeted with a
packed house of protesters objecting
strenuously to this new effort to add to
our 'business problems. • • •
* REQUIEM FOR A PRIZEFIGHTER
Time was when Corona del Mar, In Its
youthful zest and enthusiasm for com-
munity identity, was ready to come out
swinging against any attempts at down-
grading. Old-timers will particularly re-
call the 1956-57 effort to take away the
first class status of the local Post Office •.
The entire community --business owners
and residents --rallied to the defense of
their Post Office. The Corona del Mar
Chamber of Commerce came Into being
directly as a result of that campaign,
and the Chamber Immediately took the
leadership in a lengthy but successful
fight against even greater odds than face
Its now. The order for consolidation with
the Newport Beach Post Office had already
hee n issued by Washington, but the com-
munity out cry resulted in a withdrawal
of that order. Another try was made In
1971, and again there arose determined
opposition --and again the effort was
abandoned .
Now the consolidators are at It again.
Is it going t o he "three times and rut"?
Thus far there has heen no rallying to
the cause of civic pride and local identity,
no word of protest from the Corona del
Mar Chamber of Commerce or from the
Civic Association. Where are the stalwart
champions of bygone years? This may
truly be a requiem for a prizefighter --
but then again, there is always the prospect
of getting up at the count of 9· to fight
s o m e m ore, and win.

ISTEN TO GEORG
TOM AND BEN
Why do we keep il!llorlng the advice of great men like Washington, Jefferson,
Franklin? These are the fellows who came .., with Ideas on government thai are
copied and studied all over the world. For an American to lgt10re them Is like
a Christian igtiOring Christ or a Jew paying no attention to Moses.
For enmple, Washington advised us to DOt elect anybody tmder 45, or anybody
who can't afford to serve In the oUlce to which elected. The Idea worked grellt
then, and II would work now.
Instead, we have this big movement to get the public to finance ali politicians
through taxes. How ridiculous can we get? Why should you and I have to pay the
political eJpenses of a guy we wouldn't even vote for? U a man Is DOt successful
enough to be able to raise his OWD campail!ll funds, what kind of a public servant
is he going to be?
or course, this all goes back to the seniority system and the practice of letiiDg
some of these old yahoos stay In office forever. Just wheo a guy becomes so
senile he can't remember his name, he has enougll seniority to be In charge of
everything. Kick these birds out after a co..,le of terms and we wouldn't have
this problem.
And, speaking of birds, what about that West VIrginia Byrd? He acts more Uke
a new breed of buzzard, peeldng away at the body of Rockefeller while be's still
alive. This ldnd of chancier asass!D ou TV Is just as dangerous as tbe aut with
a rlfie. Rockefeller lsD't asldng anybody to s...,ort him or bls e&~llll· I gUeSS
thai's Wby all of those old cronies In Congress doD't llke him. He's DOt playing
their crooked game.
