1 challenge Mr. Goo inez' cpinion poll
of "overwhelming support" among CDM
businesses for downgrading the CDM Post
Office to a mere "station," with just a
station master in charge. I can bnagine,
of course, the "yes" response to Mr.
Gcxlinez' soothing assurances of saving
money with no deterioration of service.
But I know of no instance of any govern-
mental agency cutting down expenses as
a result of growing bigger. Precisely the
cpposite is revealed in the growth of
big government. Consolidation and mer-
gers are the breeding ground of waste,
inefficiency and disregard for local
patrons.

l uke 2 :6; 7 reads : "And so it was,
that, while they wert: there, the days
were accompl ished that she should be
delivered. And she brought forth her
firstborn son, and wrapped him in
swaddlin,:: clothes. and laid him in a
man~r : bed usc: thu~ wa!' no room
for them in the inn.''
The foregoing verses (6, 7) present
a most wonderful t:vent -the birth of
t he: Savi our of the world . In the little
town of Bethlt:hem ("House of
B~ad") Jesus the Redeemer was
born. Hert: wt: may recall the signifi·
a nt prophecy recorded in I saiah 9 :6
which reads as follows : "For unto us
a child is born. unto us a son is given :
a nd the governmt:nt shall be u pon his
shoulder : and his name: shall be cat1ed
W onderful. Counsellor, The mighty
l.od. The C:\'erlasting Father. The
Prince: o f Peace:."
Vc:r~ 7 states that Mary laid her
fi rstborn child in a manger "because
they had no room in the in n." I n this
connection the remarks of a foremost
authority on the historical geography
of the H oly Land arc: worthy of note:
"This is not to be understood to mean
merely that there was no room for the
child ; but that the inn in which they
could have found lodging lacked a
suitable room for the bi rth , as well as
a suitable bed for the Babe. so that
they had to leave: the inn and find
rduge in a crib in a stable .... In the
East today the dwelling place of man
a11d bl=ast is ohc:n in one: and tht aamt
roorn. It is quite: the usual thing
a.rnong the: peasants for the family to
h v~. eat, and sleep on a kind of rai~d
terrace (Arab. ma.rtaba ) in the: onr
roo~1 of th,e house. while: the cattle,
par.t1cularly donkeys and oxen, have
then place below on the actual floor
(Ka l'l-Bd ) nt:a r the door. . . But
this is not how the Evang-elist con-
ceived it to have been: he: imagines
that the ma n,::er was outside the inn,
that is to say, in some particular stable,
such as are used today for camels,
sometimes, but more rarely for sheep.
He takes it for gnnted that the stable
was empty, as would ~ natural during
the time: when sheep spent the ni~ht in
the open. In it must be imagined a
mangt:r up on the wall, which was to
do duty a.s a crib for the Bahe. lt must
be remembe red that the Palestinian
count ry folk know nothing-of bed-
steads. hut their nightly couch iJ
spread ever y evening anew upon the
te rrace of the house. It would hardly
do to lay suckli n~s in this same fashion
on tht> Aoor. where they would be in
danger o f being trodden on by men
and beasts. and where it w ould be
difficult to keep them clean. . . The
real difficulty consisted not so much
in the finding of a place for the Child .
as of fi nding an undisturbed place for
th_e birth. : .. Anyone who has lodg-ed
w•th Paleshman peasants knows that
notw ithstandin~ their hospitality the
l<~ick of privacy is unspeakably painful
One cannot have a room to oneself
a ?d one is never !'lo ne bY day or hf
mght. At a b•rth alone it is cus-
tomary to empty the house of its in-
habitants. This consideration Mary ~·ould not expect, even at a proper inn"

NEW YEAR WISH
We wrsh all o l our readers a
blessed New Year. For believers
rn Chnu it wrll be most blessed
ol all if thrs comrng year turns
out to be the year of our Lord's
coming IOf His own .
How long the present dispen·
sation of grace wol l be prolonged
we do not, and cannot know.
Even Sarnt Paul, who was com·
m1uroned to make known the
glor1o us truth ol the ra pture of
the Church , did no t know. He
never dreamed that God would
linger .n mercy for more than
1900 yean . for in I Thn saloni·
ans 4: 16·18 he says : ''WE who
are al•we and remain unto the
comtng of the Lord, SHALL BE
CAUGHT UP .... " Thus instructed
Bible·be lievers in everv genera·
tion since his day have rightly
been on the aten for their Lord
to come tor them, for they know
that "the days are evil" and every
hour is an hour of grace.
To the Philippians the apostle
wrote: ''WE LOOK FOR THE
SAVIO UR"; and to the Theste·
loniam: "VE ... WAIT FOR HIS
(Goo·sl SON FROM HEAV·
EN"; and to Titus l'le savs we
.tlould be "LOOKING FOR
THAT BLESSED HOPE, AND
TH E APPEARING IN GLORY
OF ... OUR SAVIOUR, JESUS
CHRIST .. jP!t;l. 3:20; I Thot.
1:9,10; Tit. 2: 11 ·13).

CALL CENTRAL CASTING
Well, tor the tirst time In history, we saw the U. S. Congress In session on TV
the other night. Maybe they shouldn't have done II. It scared this old counlry hoy
half lo death. The place looks Uke an Indoor Roman arena trom a Cecil B. De
Mille production. But, Instead ot the Christians being thrown to the Uons, It's
a case of the laxpayers being thrown to the politicians. It looked like there was
a cast ot thousands there. Somehow, VIce-President Rockefeller survived months
ot Inquisition In the arena and came out looking pretty good. Real class.
The more I think ahoul It, the more I believe our entire too-heavy government
Is one bi g De Mille mob scene. People charging ar0111d In all directions, with
their chariots clanking Into ""ch other. Endless social events with mass elbow-
bending.
And, like lhe Roman Legions, our bureaucratic hordes keep spreading their
conlrol t.ar and wide and strengthening their hold on the national windpipe. They
are such a big voting block DOW, they teed on their own strength. Politicians are
atrald ot their own employees, because they wield such power. The Frankenstein
monster they have created now swats them aro~nd at will. The pension payroll
grows every year.
How would old Cecil B. De Mille handle such a mob scene? We know he got
most ot his character a clors trom Hollywood's Central Casting Ofllce. But, where
In the world did we g<>l lhls crowd that we're stuck with?
Maybe we should do Uke old Cecil. Call 14' Central Castin'fliillr'llry; ••Send us
a President who Isn't atrald to show some leadership."
And "do you have any Senatorial !Jpes that don't drink?"
Or, "pick out a tew thousand emas and rush them right over. No, It doesn't
matter who they are, they can't be any worse than the mob we've got now. Include
a few simple men to replace those Praetorlans on the Coast Commission."
Maybe Cecil would look at such a mob and fire the whole crowd, cancel the
picture, and turn out an Interesting short subject, with a smaller cast. We -could
do that too, you lalow.
Almost anybody we pick to replace the mob we've got would have to be an
Im provement.
Whatever happened to the Romans, anyway?
AL FORGIT
P. S. We app~eclate aU the cards, letters and phone calls, Can't possibly an-
swer them aU, but keep them coming, anyway. II soows you're lnteroated. And
that's what this corner Is au about. • • • • •
Down at the store, we've got pencils, pads, · peoa 1.1111 era-• piling rid ot
small mistakes. And fiyowattera =· maybe that' I wbllt we need Ill tha CCJDCI'IIIiolt=
al arena.
