• MR. NIXON'S ~AN SHOULD RESIGN
There are a whole lot of us who can
rightly say, "Don't blame me; I voted
for John Schmitz."
Not quite enough, however --because
a bundle of big money turned up for
the June primary race In 1972, and
President Nixon's man, Andrew Hinshaw,
came In at the last moment and won
a narrow victory In that congressional
election. The nation lost one of the
best patriots serving in Congress.
Perhaps now that error can be cor-
Tected. The first step In the right
direction would be for Mr. Nixon's
man to follow the example set by his
boss. Andrew Hinshaw should resign
as U. S. congressman.

Coogratuli.Uons for your editorial against revenue

by oar federal government.
Some time bl.clr., Mayor Mclnn!s delivered one of
the ftnest messages I llan ever beard, during the cam-
paign for GoYeroor Reapn's taJ: relief lnitlattve. Om ·
mayor answered the Ora..Dge Coast Cbapter president Jf
tbe Women's League of Womeo Voters, wbo stated that
tal reductioas would Interfere w1th the city's share of

Newport Beach ln tbe llrst place.
1 am ~lnted that Paul Ryckoff was the only
cotmcilman a.trected by the mayor's wisdom. M.r. Ryckoff
deserves tupayers' gratitude; It ls dift'lcult to take a
courageous stand api.Dst your peers, particularly when
you are the loo.e dissenter. , .. ,
·vice-Mayor Dostal and Locllle Kuetm s grab for tree
federal cash was e,.pected. However, I am shOcked that
my fellow Realtor Pete Barrett, does not know better.
1 do DOt reel Pete' could r~m his business with a federal
subsidy; he would change overnight from an lndependenl
cootractor to an lOOentured sern.nt.
I could DOt help applaOO Mr. Ryckotf's remark: "Con-
dttloos Imposed by the federal government are rather
onerous; I t..ve a feeUng we don't need the ltnds."
ROD CALDERHEAD
I have an idea that Mayor Mcinnis'
remark during the tax r elief initiative
campaign is more typical or his personal
conviction than his vote for federal
housing funds. Mr. Mcinnis, as our
mayor, has an obligation to show leader-
ship in civic action that will help save
our nation from fiscal disaster, and
at the same time save our city from
more control by federal bureaucrats.
The proper course of action is not to
implement the December vote for federal
funds.

• WHY PRINT THE BLOTTER?
From time to time I have replied
to objections to publishing the "police
blotter" record of arrests, thefts, van-
dalism, mishaps and accidents and other
local incidents that are reported daily
in the blotter. No reply actually Is
called for, because thes& incidents are
Items or public record, and thereby
open for news reporting. There Is more
than legality, however, that justifies
puhtlcatlon or the police blotter. Con-
alder this Item from Iowa:

be appointed hutily to their office.
They should 'fint be proved,· or tested,
cithu by a period of probationary
training, or by a care£ ul examination
of their past, and only when found
'blameless,' or free from accusation,
could they be allowed to serve-the
church."
Also, the same writer comments:
"Their [dtacons') wives, too, must
ult'Ct the same requirements u them-
selves, for they would often find it n~
ccssary to share with their husbands
the periormance of delicate duties. It
is true, many feel that the reference
here [in v. II J is not to the 'wives' of
deacons, as indicated by the Author-
iud Version, but to an order of 'dea-
conesses.' The Revised Vusion leaves
the matter undetcnnined by translating
the word. 'women._' It is sunly safe to
sa)" that the r«~bircmcnts hcrc men-
tioned are sucll as may well be re-
garded proper {or all women wOTkcn

the wives of dca.cona, or other women
vcrfomling similar taaks. These WC>-
Illl'O must be 'grave-,' that ;.s, comport-
ing themselves with ilhc same dignity
as the deacons. They must not be
'slanderers,' for it would be vn y easy
to rna.kc a wrong usc of the many de-
tails which they would learn in rcfer-
cuce to the private lives of 1M mmt-
t..ers of the congregation and of their
families. They mwt be 'temperate'
and sane, and not govt'l'ncd merely by
their emotion& They must be a.beo-
lutcly rdiablc and ttuM:wonhy and
'iaithi ul i.n a.ll things.' T his reference
is made to the-wives of deacons, prob-
ably because Paul is proceeding to
reitt, as a climax of his requircroc:nt.t,
to the iautily life of thcx church of-
ticera. ·~ .. [deacons) arc ·¥' be-, ~ 'i<:~i.thiul hf1jJ>4"<1s,' Of", as the word:,

on dtfTt'rtnt grounds. Btshops arc thus
to show the-ir qualifi<:atioh to be spir-
itual rulers and 'overseers'; dtacons
<:~rc thus to win and preserve the es-

by saying that those who rl'lCd these
rrquir_e-mmts, both as to private life
and as to official conduct, 'gain to
themselves. a good st~nding, and great
boldness tn the fa.~th which is in
Christ J csus.' The exact mFaning of
tbese phrases is not quite clear; but
from what he jl'aulj has ju.st written
he seems to indicate that such fidelit}
in ~ce, however humble may be. the
t.luhcs o f the deacons, will not fail to
secure for them high respect and en-
viable positions df wholesome influence
in the cl-turcb. They will experience
also gTCat 'boldneaa,' or 'assurance.' in

GO WEST -FANNY!
•
Fabulous Fanny Fox is our candidate for Woman of the Year.
Not since Lady Godiva got goosebumps riding ln the streets of Coventry
has an lllclad female done so much to change polltlcs.
For years, voters have been wondering how to upset the senility
(seniority) system In Congress. It was beginning to look like old Wilbur
Mills was going to hang on forever to that powerful Ways and Means
job. But, Fannie had ways and means of her own. She got old Wilbur
to show his true colors. It was kind or embarrassln~ to everybody ex-
cept the people or Arkansas. Nothing embarrasses them. They elected
him lor the umpteenth lime even afler the !rollc down by the Tidal
Basin (now known as the old Mills pond).
Now, ll we could just get Fannie to come out West ror awhile. We
could use some help with that guy that controls the purse strings <;~ in
Sacramento. You know, the one who keeps getting those tickets lor drunk
driving. And, then-there's our famous local Assemblyman who stands
on bar potties. Oh, FaMie would lind some fertile fields to operate In
out here. She might have to hire extra helpers, llke Santa Claus.
Now, there are folks who will say we're kicking old Wilbur when he's
down. And we know, Wllbur and the other DemOcrats would never do
anything llke that.
But, just stop and think a minute about this guy. He has held the most
powerful job In Congress lor years, handling billions of our dollars,
and now, suddenly, he tells us he's been having alcoholic blackouts.
How many more o! those guys are running .things? No wonder the country
Is In such a mess. Maybe the whole damned crowd is blacked out.
Maybe we need to resurrect Gypsy Rose Lee, Ann Corio, and all of
the other old-time stripper; and start a sort ol Fannie's Bureau or
Investlgatlon, and weed these guys out,
You know, maybe there's a message here lor women who want to get
somewhere In pol!Ucs. Joan ot Arc was heavily dressed, and alii! got
her was a fiery deatll. So, take ott a tow of your clothes, ladies, and
lead us out of the poU!lcal wilderness. This wilderness ls lull of elbow-
bending wild men.
