The letter writer is justifiably in-
censed at the Council's cynicism in
begging for federal housing funds with
one hand, and with the other, writing
more and more restrictive laws that
discourage new construction projects
and Increase the cost of building houses.
But why pick on Ne':"Port Beach alone?
Let's include Costa Mesa also In this
plea for common sense and local re-
sponsibility for local problems. The
Mesa Council also is out for that
federal handout, with no concern ove r
the federal control thai Is certain to
accompany the cash. Together, the
Newport Beach and Costa Mesa Coun-
cils could set a wonderful example
for city councils throughout the nation
by refusing to ask for federal financing.

Stained glass windows, each w,ith its own
story, bedsteads, brass, white enameled
iron and even luxurious poUsbed mahogany,
with brocaded draperies tied tack with heavy
silken cords, formed comfortable booths
around the room and oo the gallery. Old

Edward Pellegrin was one of the oll

been to the camp, planning tor an auxiliary,
and bad rescued the gentleman, whose car

Ed ls still devoted to the work with the

Cbrist'1 Authority ud His Attitude Toward
tbe Bible.
Christ Is true God and true man in the same person.
In Hlm ue hid aU the treasures of wtsdom and know-
ledre, and In Him dWells all the rutness o! the God-
hej.d bodily (Col. 2:3,9}. No cune was ever found In
Hl.s mouth (2 Pet.2;22). All that He says Ia God's word.
He states: "t have not spotc;en of myself; but the Father
..
~~:y,'":~d ~:~~a;esh~ekl a s:-':.~{~~~;49~:~~
wordS are lmperlshlhle truth: "Heaven and earth shall
pass away; but my words shall not pass away'' (Mk.
13:31; Lk . 21:33). This applies to ever)'thl.nc that He
says , His statements on the Bible included. What He
says of the wrHtnrs of the Bible ts not an opinion amonr
other opinions but absolute and final truth. All news
that are ln conflict with His statements are error
and falsehood, even when they are labeled as results
of sclenttllc #tJ<fY. Sc lt~nce, too. Is a work at t~rrtnc
men, as becomes evident time alter time. What Jesua
uys Is divine truth, from which thue is no appe11. If
this Is den.led, His true Derty Ls denJt~d. All those who
do so are representatives of the sptrH at anttchrlst
(1 Jh.2:22f.; 4:3).
When Jesus speaks of the Scriptures He naturally
refers to the Old Testament, for the New Testament
did not yilt u1st.
We ftrst pay attention to Christ's GENERAL ATTI-
T1JDE TOWARD nt.E OLD TESTAMENT.
OUr rtrst obeernilon 18 thU Chrlst nn'8r crtt1cl.us
tbe Old Testament. He n.n.r ctyes eno a hint that It
mlcht contain mt.tatea and error a, bat Re UW.,-•Pif•
ol tt u absohtleJ7 dependable and d1TtMI:r autbortta-
the. A(aln and apln He refers to It w1th the words• "It
Is written". Accordtnrr to Him, "what Ls wrttten" ls
flnaJ and decisive, and there Is nohlchercourt Of appeal.
Even the devil could not arrue wben Jesw; tn tbe wt.l-
daroess repelled his temptatiCil W1th tbe written worda
of Scripture. In ward1nc' off the &5Sflrtlons at hJa op-
ponents H11 could say, "Haw ye not rtlad ..• " (Mt.
12:3,'5; 19:4; 16:42). What ~ns read 1n tht Scriptures
was nnat, because It wu God's Inerrant and authortta·
tlve Word. People err and co astray because they do
not know the Scriptures: "Do ye not therefore err, be·
cause ye knmr not the scriptures, neither thll power
of God?" (M k. 12:Z4 ).
Both Jesus and the WTtter.s of the New Testament
lnterJret Jesus' comtnr lnto the world, Hta tnchlnc and
work, and Hts sacrlllclal death and resurrection, etc.,
u fUlftllment of the Old Testament prophecies. The
Gospet., particularly Matthew, use rt~peatedlythe phrase,
"That tt mtcbt be fULOlled wblch was written (spoken
of the Lord by the prophet). •• '' 111eSfl statements are
based j)l'l the conVIction that the Old Testament Scrip·
turn are God's word which contalns Hili reveTatton on
His plan of salTation. Ch rist and the New CoYenant ls
:a fulnlment of the plan r•vealed In the Old Testament.
Thus, the New Testament Is built upon the Old Testa-
ment, and they fvrm an tnt81Tated and conatstent untty.
Another Important Issue Is WHAT CHRIST SAYS ON
TilE INDIVIDUAL PARTS AN D PASSAGES OF TI1E
OLD TESTAMENT.
For more than a. hundred years liberal Bible atudy
h.a s almt~d tts destructive criticism espaclaiiJ at the Bot*s
of Moses or Pentateuch. noe critics hold that Moses has
not written these books, but they have been eomPQHd
abOut :a thousand years a.Aer hlm of n.rlous: documents
and deceUtully put undsr Moses' name, as ·tbouCh he
had written them. About the same Is clatrneod eoncern-tnc many other books or parts ol the Old Test.ameot,
e.r . the book of Dante! and a considerable part of the
prophetical books:
Jesus speaks of the "Ia.,.., (TORAH, NOMOS, whiCh
name both the Old Tesbm.t and the Nt~w Tutament
use of the Pentateuch) as bebW fttttan bJ Moeea tnd
ltterally uUable: "Tlll hea'"n and earth pau,one jot or
one title shall In no wt-pau lrom tbe law, tiU a.ll
be MIUled'' (Mt. 5:Ul). Accordfr:c to Christ, the WOI'da
of Mons and Hta own words han equal autbortt7 and
must be belleftd and Obe,.cl with almllar truat and sub·
mlsslwMas: "For had ~ beU.ftd MOM•, ,. would
