• O.K. TO LEGISLATE GOOD TASTE?
A writer in the "Letters to the Editor"
on this page seeks to present legal
arguments for legislating good taste.
The target of his letter is my contention
that our local planners and lawmakers
caruwt ootlaw signs just because they
don't like the looks of the signs. Then
some court cases are cited supporting
the "aesthetic" argument for lawmaking.
I have just as much respect for such
Supreme Court rulings as I have for
the decision that legalized the murder
of unborn babies. Some day, we may once
again have a Supreme Court majority
that will uphold the U. S. Constitution,
respect the sanctity of human life, throw
out mischievous laws that try to regulate
personal taste, and restore our con-
stitutional republic. Hopefully that
restoration can be accomplished by the
time we celebrate the 20oth anniversary
of our nation. That would be an excellent
bicentennial goal. • • • * DRIFTING TOWARD SOCIALISM
Concern over our national drlfttoward
socialism has been expressed many
times In this Log. An echo of this
warning has just come from our nation's
capital --from budget director Roy
ASh, who said that the Ford administra-
tion is seeking to curb ''income re-
distribution" programs, which threaten
to destroy our free enterprise system.
Mr. Ash warned that If the welfare
programs continue to grow as they have
In the past, the U. S. "may be Ir-
reversibly on the road toward a con-
trolled economy," and this would result
"in a steadily declining standard of
living, such as Is occurring in England."
This is not just a national problem.
We can do s omething about It right
here at home. We can do our bit t o
discourage this "Income redistribution"
by refusing to go along with the scramble
fur that "free" federal cash. A good
place to start Is the current proposal
to apply for federal housing funds. With
a little courage --and concern for the
survival of our nation --our City
Council could blaze the way for other
city councils throughout the nation by
saying "no" to federal funds, and to
federal controls.
