Now God said, "You build a battlement around that roof." Let's look ro the solution for today's degenerating homes. To safeauard the home there must be discipline. Discipline c:atries with it responsibility. Fir:st, to be able to properly dW:ioline, parents must dis-- cipline themselves ... Dad and Mom are so wrapped up in outside activi· ties that they just gjve their children their way . Second, don't teU the child to do something unless he should do it, but wben you tell him to do something mate sure that he does it. Stay with him until it is done. Proverbs 13:24 aays, "He that spareth the rod hateth hi.s son." Proverbs 23 :13 states: "For if thou boat him with the rod, be will not die." Too manv homes are run by the children, aome parents are actually afraid of their children. What time do your children come in? Do you ae-t the time or do they? Do you set curfew time or do you depend upon the community to do so? How many nights a week are they allowed out? Do they name the niJhtJ. or do you? lothua said, •• As for me and my house we will serve the Lord." Is that true in your home? Jt will be if d!tciplir.e has its proper place. But you knO'W, you can have dis- cipline, prayer. famil y wonhip. but if it is not backed by consistent Christian living, it will mean that the home will be a mockery befo re God. An ounce of example is worth a pound of talking. Read the Wf'ltds of Peter, "And add to your faith, virtue, and to your virtue knowledge, and to your knowJ. edge temptraoce, and to your temperance patience, and to patience, ,i!odliness: and to ll'Odli· ness. brortlerlv kindness and to brotherly kindness, love for if these thin~ be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the know!· edge of our Lord Jesus Olrist" We can talk about faith but let's have the courage to put it i~to action. We ca"n talk about knowledge, but let's set our minds and hearts to detennine that we shall be infonned in God's ways and know what is goin~ on in this ~rear country in which we live . Let's let temperance and petience be a rule of .our live~. As Christian Americans we need to set before the people of this world the eumple of godliness by not deny· ing the power therein, but by trans· formed, dedicated lives. That will be the testimo~y in our homes. in our communities and throughout the world -we are not ashamed to be God·lilce. Jesus set before us the example of brotherly kindness. but it was not a compromising kindness for He loved man enough to show kindness through a stand for the truth which will set men free. The world is lacking in love today, but the true Christian exercises it, fen the Christian loves the truth. jJood· ness, freedom, America. and the Church. and that love is an active love that is not tumed on and off at the whim of the individual but is ronl~d in that which is good, pure, and lUSt. There is a storv about four clergy· men who were discussin~t the merit& of the various translations of the Bible. One liked the Kinll James because of its simDie. heautiful Ena· fish . Another liked the American Venion because it was more lite1111l. The fourth was silent, then said .... like my mother's translation best She translated it into life. and it was the most convincins translation I ever saw." Every Christian is really a transla- tion of the Bible which men are read-- ing day bv day. We must translalc into everyday activity the te.chin_. of God as they are revcakd in Chrill. If you are one of the many victi ms With some infirmity of the flesh, perhaps you will ae:ree with the little chorus wh1ch says: "Heaven 1S better than this." The Scriptures tell us that "the whole creation groaneth and trav-aileth in pain together until now" (Rom. 8:22). Note the expression: "the whole creat1on." This takes In the whole world : no one is e .. · eluded. Indeed. the very next verse goes on to say to Christian be· liever.;: "And not only they. but ourselves also ... groan ... wait- Ing for ... the redempt ion of our body." No doubt many of us feel like crying out with the Psalmist David: "Turn Thou unto me, and have mercy upon me; for I am desolate and affl icted." "look upon mine affl1ction and my pain " (Psa. 25:16. 18). However. in spite of all the sor· row. troubl,. 11nd oain which the child of God must endure. he Is assured by the Apostle Paul that: " ... our LIGHT atfllcllon, which is but for a MOMENT [compara· tivelyl. worketh for us A FAR MOR£ EXCEEDING AND ETERNAL WEIGHT OF GLORY" (II Cor. 4 :17). When we go to be with the Lord we will no longer be living in "this earthly tabernacle." but will have "a building of God , an /louse not made with hands, eternal in the heavens" (11 Cor. 5:1). Paul even adds that as Christiens we earnestly desire "to be clothed upon with our house [our naw body) which Is from heaven" (II Cor. 5:2). Finally. St. Paul declares that "to depart and to be with Christ ... Ia· far better" (Phil. 1:23); fer bet· ter. not only than all earth's sor· row and trouble end p.ln, but far better even than earth•s a~~eateat }oys end dtlerest treasures. Why dld,God ~~ low Jeplstlioh 1 loolloh vow to run Ita couraa? A. The nature of Jephthah's vow has been much mi s unders tood . In Judges 11 :30.31 Jephthah, on the eve of his decisive con~ flict with powerful Ammonite invaders, made a solemn promise to God that if he would grant victory over the foe, then whoever would come forth from the doors of his home to meet him would be- come the property of the Lord, "and I will offer h im up for a burnt offering." Obviously it was some hu- man being who was to be in~ volved, someone from Jeph~ thah's household establish· ment or some member of his family, and one who would care enough about Jephthah ·personally to become the first to greet him. The Hebrew text thus excludes the possi- bility of any animal serving as a candidate for this burnt offering; it was intended from the outset to be a human being. Had it been a beast there would of course have been no problem about sacrifk:ing it upon the altar as a blood of- fering (which tbe Hebrew word for burnt offering, 'Ol4h, nonnally Implied). But in this special ease, since it wu to be a human member of the household who would be the lira\ to greet Jephthah, it ,,.. Bifl Sags THE SWORD OF THE I.Oim Bos lOH. Murb"u J2l:Wo, T ... Where Ia the Ark of dl!e CoYenant Toda7? . ' ' was out or the question for a Jiteral blood sacrifice to be performed. Why? Because human sacrifk:e wu sternly and ...r~v.eate<lly forbidden by ·God in his Law:1 ~ • It would have been alto- gether unthinkable for Jeph~ thah or any other Israe1ite to imagine that he could please God by committing such a heinous and abhorrent abom- ination in his presence or at his altar. j'You shall not be. have thus toward Yahweh your God, for every abomi. nable act which Yahweh hates they [the Canaanites] have done for their gods; for they even burn their sons and daughters in ftre to their gods. Whatever I command you, you shall be careful to do ; you shall not add to nor take away from it. "1 Again, "There shan not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire ... for who- ever does these things is de. testable to Yahweh ; and be- cause of these detestable things Yahweh your God will drive them out before you."• In view of Yahweh's well- known prohibition and ex- pressed loathing for this practice, it would have amounted to a complete re- nunciation of God's sover- eignty for Jephthah to have Undertaken such a thing. It would have been a repudia- tion of the ve_ry covenant that constituted Israel as God's holy::;~•· Eq incredible is the notion that God, foreknowing that Jephthab w .. intending thus to ftout hia Law and trample upon hia covenant, would nevertheleu have • granted him victory over the foe. As Delitueh points out,4 the whole record of the manner in which this vow was carried out pointa to her dedication to the service ot the Lord as a lifelong min. istrant at the nati.Qnal sanc. tuary. She was allowed a mourning period of two months, not to bewail her ap. proachifl&' death, but rather to lament over her penn anent virginity' and the resultant extinction of her father's line, since she was his only child, As oJ)e set apart for taber- nacle service ahe would never become a mother; hence it is emphasized that "she knew not a man."• Thia would have been a pointless and inaner~ mark if in fact she was put to death. Jephthah acted as a man of honor in carrying out his promise and presenting his daughter as a living sacrifice, as all true Christiana are bid~ den to present themeelvee.' Had he committed a detested abomination like the slauah· ter of his own child he nev~ would have been listed with the heroes of faith in· He- brews 11 . c:>t • ' • .... f&lljiiRIWWW ·~ IUTIIIZ!ft 1"111111 , ... OSTA MilA ta ........ Row 642-1640 ~ ~ ~....-~ WHERE ARE THE PE .NNIES? An awful lot of pennies, nickles and dimes have been shoved into Newport's parking meters since we established the off-street parking !lind a few years back. The fUnd was established for the purpose of buying up some property to build parking lots, so people who work and shop in our town would bave a place to park, along with all or the summer visitors. The meters are stUI working, but whatever became of the parking fUnd? OUr Newport Chamber or Commerce was supposed to be a sort of a watchdog over this thing. Old the dog go to sleep? Like so many other things the Chamber of Commerce gets lnvolved ln, we have been left wondering what's going oo. City Hall says there's about $300,000 in the fund now, but I don't see them buying any oft-street parking. Meanwhlle, such properties as the old LeValley's Market keep coming on the real estate market, Also, we have the end of 32nd Street, which just sits there walling for some logical use, Now, our mayor talks about using the parking !lind to Onance that park out in West Newport. I don't believe the money was Intend...; for that purpose when !got the Council to establish the !ulld, Somehow, we can find city llmds to get a parking lot for Don Koll's seagulls, but the people who are employed by Newport's businesses In the old sections are stlllleft with oo place to park. Maybe an audit of the parking !lind Is due. Also, the City CouncU bas an oft-street parking committee that sbould be oolng Its job, Why don't tbey teU us what plans they have for tho !lind and what parking arotls they plan to apeo up wltb It? Tbls Is the public's money they are sitting on, and I think we have a rltlbl to liDow what they e>pect to batch. There are some folks in town who would Uke to see trw city buy the Pussycat Theatre. Well, we need some oft-street parking, .a 11hY not buy the property, tum II into a parking lot, and get rid or the ol>jecttonable monos, all at tho same Umel U oor parking committee doesn't want to oo Ibis, don't you thiDk they shoUld at least ten us what they ARE going to oo with that mooey?
