THE BRIDGE
The Upper Bay Bridge Is kind of lUte the weather -everybody talks about 11, but
nobody can seem to get anything done. Every Ume our ctty fathers take a step fo.rward
on getting a new bridge, the state pushes them ba ck 2 steps and the target date lor
completion gets a Utile further away, KiDd ol me cbaslng a nlnbow.
Tuesday night, everybody In town got a cbaDce to talk about wbat kind of bridge
they want, and we aU still bave unUI Aug. 21 to ret our opinions to the state Trans-
purtal!on Dept. WeU, I'd Uke to cast my vote lor a tuonel or a loU bridge. For years,
we tnve heard a tunnel would cost $30 miUion. For some strange reason, the price
has not gone up lor the past 20 years. Either aomebody lied to us the first lime or
IMy're lying now about that $30 mlllloo ftgure, I bave a suggesUoo: Why don't we
ask a com;>any that builds tunnels, and see ho'O' much they would build one lor? A
tunnel would keep the bay in a more natural state, a.nd make for a safer entrance
to the Back Bay, which soooer or later, we are going to have the good sense to
dredge.
U we can't get a tunnel, theo for goodness sakes, let's get a bridge high enough
to let boats go under safely. Th• Coast Guard, which has the last say, has told us
they won't buy a low bridge. Why can'l we get the message? We're going to end ~
planning a low bridge, then bave to start all over when the Guard says no, and that
wiU )lst postpone things further,
Up at San Pedro, they built a toll bridge tbat paid lor ltseU 10 years earl!er than
predicted. A high toll bridge here 'O'OU!d ouelhe bui'Mn on the over-Oitended,gasollne
tax lund, and would meet the Ideal public se"lce requirement· th&t users pay lor
Anolher way to ease the load on Coast Hwy. would be to hurry up and get University
Drive extended across tile Back Bay. This Ia JOmethlng •• can do •lthoul 'll':lllln(t
· lor Sacramento to cogltatll lor a !e• years. The county boys say the)"re ready,
Newport Is ready, and Costa Yesa only ta1 a small section ol tho route. Wby don't
'0'0 let DO wltb It?
Back to the bridge. I underalalld that Mr. Carpenter and Yr. Badbam; our local
repre18Dtal!ves In Sacramento, are roiDg 14> be uJdnr lor a "promotloo" to higher-
;. rantdnc positions In govomment. U IIley can't pt •• .a brldco, wby 1bould we pro-

' : Now, let's let common 180M lake OYer, and let's ll&rt lalft1Dc to the right people ~ (not Just to each other and the ll&te) ind let's ret a bridge buUI.
