Last February, Los Angeles Mayor
Tcm Bradley vetoed a drastic news-
rack ordinance, and the veto stood up.
Mayor Bradley based his veto on his
convtctloo that the newsrack ordinance
violated the first amendment to the
U. S. Coo stltutloo . In August, 1974, a
federal judge ruled against a newsrack
ordinan ce In Pennsylvania, stating that
newspapers have the right -under the
first ame ndm ent not oo ly to print but
to s ell their newspape rs.
City Coun c ils an d lawmakers all over
the nation , please note: That first amend-
ment still stands, un-amended and un-
r epe aled.

Last February, Los Angeles Mayor
Tom Bradley vetoed a drastic news-
rack ordinance, and the veto stood up.
Mayor Bradley based his veto oo his
coovlctioo that the newsrack ordinance
violated the first amendment to the
U. S. Con stitution. 1n August, 1974, a
federal judge ruled against a newsrack
ordinance In Pennsylvania, stating that
newspapers have the right .under the
first ame ndment not only to print but
to sell their newspapers.
City Councils and lawmakers all over
the nation, please note: That first amend-
ment still stands, un-amended and un-
repealed.

Commendatioo is also In order for
the Newport Beach City Council for
ta::>ling a r equest t o spend $497 of our
tax mcney for a Daily Pilot ad coo-
gratulating UC: Irvine on its 1 Ot.h an-
niversary. That's where the request
should remain --under the table --
forever. This same lctnd of request has
ccme up in past years, and I have
been prcmpted to get up at a Council
meeting to argue against such use of
tax funds --and I have declared It to
be Ensign policy never to ask the Coun-·

There are other ways for the Council
members to pay their respects to UC
Irvtne. For example, put their purse
where their heart Is. Mayor Doo Mcinnis
made such a suggestloo by volunteerlng
to put up $70 of his persooal tunds,
U the other 6 Council members would
do the same, to pay for a coogratulatory
ad. I would suggest an Improvement
to tbe mayor's plan: After collectlni
that $480 frcm the 7 Council membeu,
the Council should hand tat maa.y
directly to UC ln1ne u a per.,.~.
contrlbutloo to our local UDlVenlty.

l wu on the block, there was no
doubt about it. During my whole
rookie lear with the Baltimore
Colla I ha caught only 13 passes.
That wa.s 1956. Now another season
wu beKinning, and we were in
Hershey, PeiJ.nsylvania, taking on
the Philadelphia Eagles in an exhi-
bition game. I was picked for the
starting lineup as a wide receiver,
and our quarterback rifled a pass
tome.
I dropped.iL
lt wu a cue of being frozen up
from pressure and anxiety -hoping
I wouldn't drop it and afraid I
would. And I did.
That night I figured I wa., on the
way out. I thought about suicide.
As it turned out, I wasn't cut otf
the squad after all, and that year a
free agent signed on. His name was
Johnny Unitaa. and it was to become
perhaps the greatest name in pro-
feMional footbalL He ret>laced our
injured quarterback in mid-season,
and began pitching a few to me. I
caught them.
What a break! My confidence came
roaring back, and that year I rated
tenth in the National F ootball
League as a pass receiver. For the
next 12 seasons at Baltimore Unitas
kept on hitting me, and we set a
few records.
In a way 1 was born into the
game; my dad coached high school
football in Corpus Christi. Texas,
at the time of my birth in 1933. He
continued to coach after we moved
to Paris, Texas, and I grew up with
a great love for the sport. In fifth
grade I wa.~ playing center. ~re
foot, and in the seventh and e•ghth
grades our school won the city
champion~hip. During my senior
year at Paris High School our team
won the district title; and I can tell
you that winning the 1958 world
champion~hip against the New York
Giants in sudden death overtime
didn't have anything over the thrill
of winning the high school cham-
pionship in Paris, Texas!
I entered Southern Methodist Uni-
ver!lity at Dallas and !Iince ours was
primarily a running game, I blocked
and played defeNive end. A ~am
mate went with the New York G1ants
and told the coachet~ that I had some
potential u a pa.u reeeiver. In 1954
I wu drafted by Baltimore in the
20th round aa a "future."
In 1956 the Baltimore Colla had
been in existenee only two years a.s
an exp&Mion tum, and their 88-
man !!QUad wu 45 per cent rookie.
I got a job beeaUH there was no
competJtJon. But I didn't know any-
thing about getting open, and I
cau.ht very few pa88e8. I had no
experience u a wide receiver, which
put me at coftliderable disl\dvantage,

HISTOR·Y LESSON
Boy, l'·ll tell you, we've really learned a lot In 200 years here In the good old
U.S.A. We have got so dad-blamed smart, you )1st have to wonder lt we can possibly
learn anything else.
For eu.mple:
' After spending 200 years becoming the No, I Industrial and commercial nallon
oo earth, we have ftnally learned that n were measuring everything wrong all along.
We're going to switch to the metric system.
• Starting off wltb a good, clearly-written Declaratloo of Independence and Con-
stitution, and a simple form of go•emment, we baYe adnnced to the point where
""don't underi!lllld our govomment at all • and It doem'l understand us.
• Now that we bave established ourselves as the world's gr11.test producers, and
'eaters of food, we have come upwlththe grat discoYery that swordfish tave mercury,
c ranberries can make you stet. and eggs are tull of cholesterol. How did our ancestor s
suntve?
• We have relloed lhe great American trait of "help thy neighbor" 1111 Ural we now
have more people on unemploymeot, welfare, food stamps a.od untoo relief than we
were ever able to accon,,lsh wttlr:>ut governmeut cootrol of the ecooomy, The
people oo the dole now oubwmber the prodUcers. Isn't Ural ma"elous?
• Alter ZOO years of leaflliD« to be lhe world's greatest builders, architects,
des~ers and planners, we blve llnally come to the brilliant realli!atloo ltlat we
actually· can't do anything right unless a government bureaucrat lells us trow to lxllld,
• We haYe """ 1111me wars and become strong 111001gll to protect our .. uon and
our way of life acatnst all camera • ••• to the ellerll of stopping goys wlro are
