Tbe Birch Log 011 UNICEF', published in the Aug. 14

comments by John McManus, director of public relations
for the John Birch Society, who wrtles the Birch La!<
articles:
Editor of the Ensign,
UNICEF'S response to my column ''UNICEF' Still
Al41ng Reds" ha s in no way dlsproven or mlnlmlud
the statements I have made. After years of watching
UNICEF' perform fancy footwork aroond legitimate
charges, I would have been surprised U more of the
same bad not been forthcomlng because of my etforts.
To begin wUh, I hne always found Colonel Robert
Hetnl's articles to he rellable. U he says one thlng and
UN ICEF' says another, the past track record of each
would certainly favor accepting Colonel Heinl 's position,
which Is what r did in my own column.
Beyond that chOice of sourcf's, let me pol.Dt wt that
UNICEF' made no response to my charge that Its aid l()eS
to governments aM, therefore, any aid It ;upplies to
Communl&t governments only "90lldilles the positJon

use aid properly Is, at least, incredibly naive,
But the treatment of UNICEF''s aid to the camJ;ai«n

SUPERSALESMA
The Am er ican people, who grow up listening to the Madison Avenue super-sell,
ar e now getting the biggest selling job In a long time. President Jerry Ford's hu ge
staff of bureaucrats is hard at work trying to get us to buy Jerry for president.
Now, II this guy had done anything -II he had established any kind of record 1o
run on -we wouldn't mind hirlog bim again. But, there's )Jst nothing there to bu y.
Aller all -what tile hell has he done?
Th..ls is somethine tJat we run into at least every couple of years when polltlclans
start running a y•r ahead of !be election. Notice how you start gettlng ''Sacramento
newsletters" and "WashJ.Dclon newsletters" asldng for your oplnioo? This is part of
the big sales job, to coovlnce yoo tbese guys really care wllat you think. But, they are
not going lo work lor yoo, !bey are going to keep on catering to the money that elected
t hem •
We've got guys up In Sacramenlo who think they should be In Washlngtoo. Most or
them really belong behind a broom. Some of these guys will be telling Newport
residents that they killed the Coast fr..,..,.y lor us. Don't belleve 11. They were 100
per cent behind the lnlne Company's freeway until they foond out that the people
absolut ely would not allow 11. Then they (and the !nine Co.) had a "change of heart."
Sure.
The courts are now dealing wlth some local OI'IJlle County ctaracters who were
accused of using tbeir office help (pa.id by taxpayers) to help them win elections.
The odor that's coming out of the County Seat smeUs the same as what you will lind
a round Washington and Sacramento. •
These guys always start out by saying, "I'm golDi to run oo my record." But,
what they really run on are Madl11011 A.re111e con pmea, and !be money they pt from
the big companies tblt wanl'to keep t._m oo a leash.
